Can the Dream off West for Success come true?

West's shot at finals heads south

Brent Diamond | August 24, 2008

THE clock is ticking for the Western Bulldogs' 324-game veteran Scott West, says Bulldogs development coach Brad Gotch.
West, who yesterday withdrew from the Bulldogs' VFL side Williamstown — missing crucial match practice — is now in doubt to even play another senior match for the team.
Gotch, also the Williamstown coach, said it was a massive blow to West and the Bulldogs heading into the finals.
"He had a bit of a hiccup at training on Wednesday night and couldn't get up for today's match because of soreness," Gotch said.
"It is terrible for the club and himself because he deserves more than that. We don't know if he will play VFL or AFL next week, it will depend on his knee soreness again … but you'd have to say the clock is ticking."
West insisted on Thursday night that he would be fit to play today.
The 33-year-old midfielder, a seven-time best and fairest in his 16th season at Whitten Oval, has been battling the problem for most of the year and has not played since round six.
The club said in a statement yesterday that he would resume training tomorrow.
"Scott West will not line up for Williamstown in the VFL today due to knee soreness. He will be assessed by club medical and fitness staff over the weekend and will resume training on Monday," the statement said
West lined up in a return game for Williamstown against the Bendigo Bombers last week. He managed 28 possessions and played with a heavily taped knee, but his performance should be measured against the quality of the opposition, which managed just one goal in a massive 155-point defeat.
The decision to pull out of yesterday's clash against Box Hill means West would be unlikely to be picked for the first finals game on the basis of one game in the reserves next week.
Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade said earlier in the week that West would not be given any favours as he tried to fight his way back.
The Bulldogs, in third place on the ladder, take on Adelaide at AAMI Stadium next Saturday and cannot either overtake Hawthorn in second place or drop below North Melbourne in fourth spot.
