Game Day NAB Challenge Wk 1 - Carlton v Hawthorn Gameday Discussion

Containing Hawthorn to 7 goals even in a practice match after being labelled the spoon favourites even after Essendon loses half a side....is a pretty bloody good team effort.

I have no and still don't expect finals....but I am beginning to think we could do better than bottom 4 or 5.

I think our gameplan, and to a lesser extent our players, will see us go past the likes of Brisbane, GC, St Kilda, Essendon and Melbourne.

I personally don't rate the 5 teams i mentioned, particularly in the way they play. They've all had the same coach for a few years (except Essendon) and yet have only shown small and slow improvement...whereas a team like the dogs jumped up the ladder under Beveridge, who came from the Hawthorn system.

Backing Bolton to have us rise up the ladder quicker than those 5 teams at least.

A few other observations on our ball movement and structures…

Seemed there was a strong focus on quick ball movement and honouring your team mate running with you. At times I thought this worked really well and we ran in numbers and worked up the ground quickly. Then other times we simply over-used the handballs too much and we handballed to fast or to someone in trouble because they were simply the next link in the chain rather than the right person. At times it looked like a pretty important team rule as we were blatantly looking for someone to run past to receive rather than ever looking up at the targets ahead or other available options. I think once we get better at this and have some of our better decision makers in this position we’ll be able to improve here. Exciting though to see more run and carry.

The way we covered space and swarmed the ball was impressive and the intent to get to the ball and in the face of the opposition. Still need to figure out the forward line though as at times we had no-one home up forward which was a pet hate for me under the Malthouse days. Biggest indication of this was Casboult with the highest inside 50 entries for the game of 4. If he’s got it, who can we kick to? We need more leading options into space which I didn’t see much of.

A few others have talked about the deliberate kick to the top of the goal square too, for me I think we might see a bit more success with this than last year as we now have a couple of small forwards in Lamb, Wright and Gallucci that can get to the foot of the pack.

Thought our talls in Jamo and Rowe did brilliantly overhead and had the form of a couple years ago when they were strong in pushing their men under the ball and taking the mark. Think this is more about the team structures allowing them to do this which was positive to see.

Pretty happy though seeing the team play committed football and everyone working hard.

I see that Daisy got quite a few possessions last night and a few of the punters mentioned that they weren't overly important possessions, but I'm wondering, did anyone get a sense of what might be to come. Any spark, any of that dash, cheekiness, game-busting confidence? Or is he just going to be a consistent decent 17-20 pretty good possessions player (as he was in most of 2014)? I know it's early days...

Some good signs, looks like we know how to setup the structures fairly well though there were times when we lost concentration and things weren't setup well.

Problems were guys running forward with the ball and not lowering their eyes. Really need to slam blokes who carry the ball then kick it straight to the opposition.

Thought we did well forcing Hawthorn to kick long and go wide but I thought we got sucket into going up around the boundary out of defence, which they did a lot as well but they just did it better, with more run and better kicking. More switching of play if possibly would assist I think.

We definitely have a spot in our side for a genuine strong center half back. We did well forcing the opposition to kick long, which is something Hawthorn have always done well and with guys like Lake, Gibson, Stratton etc back there who are strong in the air this is complimented. Weitering will hopefully be an advantage here for us.

Kerridge was really good for us, will fit in nicely. Thomas was ok, seemed to run hard and will be better with better players around him. Gibbs was good even though only in second gear. Simpson was rusty but looks fit, docherty had a fair influence, Graham had a good game, impact in the middle and up forward, Wright was ok, looks like in and under depth, Tutt had a fairly good game I though, ran really well, Boekhorst had a decent game and looks fitter and bigger, Curnow was quiet and I think soundly beaten by Mitchell, Casboult was very good and moved really well, Whiley really didn't stand out a lot, Rowe did as he does, produced some really good things and some really ordinary things, Touhy looks to be moving alright but not prolific, Lamb did some nice things, Kreuzer did some ok things but wasn't overly prolific, White just battled away in defence and didn't have a great game, Everitt had a poor game, didn't look to get out of first gear, Byrne had an ordinary game, expected better skills, Jamison wasn't sighted a lot, Phillips looks ok, going to need time, needs to work on his balance a bit but does some nice things, Dick was quite, just honest by him, Gorringe was quiet, Gallucci didn't get much opportunity, Charlie Curnow needs to play with more urgency, half hearted marking attempt saw him half cleaned up and he let mitchell run away from him far too easily at one stage and Jones while he tried hard didn't hold his marks and looked clumsy.

Plenty to come into the side, we played some fairly strong opposition and we seemed to set up pretty well structurally. Kicking into the forward line looked ordinary, we looked to lack options at half forward to break it up and the kicking by players on the run was appalling, hopefully this will all be addressed.

Missing Walker, Murphy, Buckley, Cripps, Sumner, Plowman, Weitering, Jaksch and Smith.

Hopefully get to see McKay and Cuningham at some stage as well.

Enough signs to suggest we won't be too bad this season.

He seemed short of confidence at times. I don't blame him, he has missed 2/3 years to injury and I think he is the type who puts as much pressure on himself as from outside.

I didn't think he was that bad, he had a few party tricks were he'd kick the ball off the ground to one of our players or tap the ball to a player.. Almost looked like the daisy of old..
Admittedly he had a lapse or two but you could easily suggest everyone did through the game.

Nominating this for 'longest paragraph without a full stop' for 2016.

Wasn't bad for our first outing of the year. Nothing too exciting besides Kerridge who was probably our best on ground. Happy to see Boek and Graham (continuing where he left off last year ) have a few good moments, and Gibbs looked good.
A large chunk of the list was pretty quiet, but that's to be expected with 8 on the bench and shorters quarters.
Also, realistically we can't expect the draftee KPP's to immediately have an impact. I think the best thing that could happen would be Jaksch and/or Plowman (when fit) breaking into the 22 asap, so hopefully KJ gets a shot next week.

Sensational thinking by the 'Brains Trust' to limit the number of interchanges. I did notice during the game that players were saved for the second half but not the limited use of the interchange. It was noticeable during the second quarter that the Hawks appeared to be out running our blokes and now I understand the reason for it. I'm looking forward to more of this innovative thinking during the season.

Just at 3 quarter time.
Umps wearing piss and shit.
I know we're av,but the no frees for obvious free kicks is pathetic
Apart from the premier ump decisions
Alistair lead with what was it?
13 premiership players
Don't want to loose to the spooners hey mate.
We wil beat them this year and that hoodoo will be done.
Our kids are better than yours hawf wanks:
Ain't no fluke
You're done angry midget:
No 4 peat
Us wogs are in your way
Go blues

Well done Bluebaggers - good first up effort plus no injuries
Liked the attack on the ball in the first quarter
Few blokes just whacking the ball on the boot and not doing our forwards any favours, hopefully with Murphy, Buckley and Sheehan into the side we can get a little more polish on R50s and I50s.
Still a bit worried about our forward line potency but I am going to put that down to 1st game, weary legs and a small ground leading to a congested forward line (is it small?)

CARN THE BLUES!

Watching the game live I was positive the first goal the Hawks kicked was from a free kick (inside 10m protected zone) that was wrong
just rewatched the game and yep the umpire was completely wrong - the Hawks player marked the ball, didn't move back and when the Carlton player went to to the mark the umpire incorrectly penalised (or have they changed the rules and you can't stand the mark if it puts you within 10m ?? That would be crazy)

I'd say 3-4 of Hawks goals came directly from pretty average free kicks. In the first half we had them cold in a lot of areas but a few unexpected frees got them in the game undeservedly. Not saying they didnt earn the win they were clearly the better side in the 3rd quarter. But we were better the other 3.
