Bethell again. He's going to be a gun
Next year's Ashes is going to be a very intriguing series. England have obviously been very poor in Australia for a while not having won a test match since Jan 2011, but with an Australian squad that will either be even older or have a fair amount of turnover, it should be much closer than the last three home series.

It is genuinely time that people probably started to take Duckett seriously as one of the better openers in the world.

He’s not ever going to be a great but he so consistently holds up his end of the ‘bazzball’ bargain and gets them off to a quick start and to be honest his odd technique holds up. It’s not quite Graeme Smith like but there’s something not dissimilar to him in that he’s a bit unorthodox and gets the ball into odd spots at times and can get on a roll and he seems absolutely unflappable.

He gets to 50 every third innings he plays. He had an underwhelming series overall in India but made one big hundred so he can obviously handle spin when he gets in, and since his first two series he’s never had a series where he’s averaged under 30 so he doesn’t have ‘bad’ patches.

Prob very unlikely, but hope we do see a fit and firing Joffra bowling in Australian conditions. Hope they bring Bairstow out too. Need villains playing in the Ashes. Bethell has those vibes about him, lol

Can't say i was impressed by his innings today. Shots bordered on stupidity.

He’s played 55 test innings. One during a chase of 100 won’t define his status overall regardless of the inanity of how he approached some of his strokeplay. To average over 40 striking at 85 opening in England is impressive
The fact he's held that spot for so long is testimony to the good job he's doing. A very plucky cricketer no doubt about it, and plays a role that makes me think Travis Head could be worth the gamble as opener one day

The ram rooters made Bethell look like his countryman Gordon Greenidge there, nice half century for the winning runs. Keep him for the next game, Robinson in for Stokes

Head could open I have no doubt. As I’ve said before I think Head’s problem is he feels like he HAS to play that aggressive way when he really doesn’t. He clearly has those gears and that’s great for when those moments arrive to put the foot down or change the direction of a game but he’s a versatile player and doesn’t have to be foot to the floor all the time because he’s proven he can be just as effective batting steady.

Head could easily be a 40-averaging opener if they tasked him with it

As a Pom supporter what do you think the future is for your captain? He actually batted nicely; gave a chance but in his defence he absolutely lathered it so it wasn’t like he nicked one straight to the keeper, he played a good strong innings finally after some wretched form, looked fit and bowled at good pace…. And then gets injured again.

I wouldn't have him bowl again - the days of his bowling making a difference are over. We have guys that bustle in and look for wickets through force of personality - Carse, Atkinson, Potts - so his best role aside from captain is mid/lower order bat depending on the situation. I like his captaincy when his crazy plans work but you also end up with interminable short pitched rubbish for overs at a time so it's swings and roundabouts.

Pope captained very well I thought this summer so hopefully it will be a smooth transition when the time comes.

that’s fair. I could see him targeting the Ashes and then maybe that could be it. I’m not sure if he’s got much left in him.

It is a shame because his bowling was something that added so much to his aura to me. I know it’s almost TOO obvious a comparison to make but when you line him up against Flintoff….

He’s a much, MUCH better batsman. His technique is better, his defence, his general strokeplay, his ability to score a century, and even his power - and Freddy could hit a BIG ball - is better.

As bowlers Freddy was better but not by a lot. People remember Freddy for 2005 and that spell he bowled to Kallis to some extent but those highlights were handpicked and he wasn’t at that level very often. He WAS very skillful and he was furiously quick at his peak.

But Stokes was also very very skilful and could swing it both ways, for a time could hit 140+ and during his real golden patch was always getting the ball when there was absolutely nothing happening to bowl the backbreaking spells and just conjure a wicket through effort. That’s probably going to be forgotten now amidst his broken body and the hubris he’s become more known for in recent times than his actual cricket

Be interesting to see what England do selection wise for the 2nd test...If Stokes can't bowl they will almost certainly want an extra bowling option that weakens the batting a bit.

Do rate Duckett, very much the most 'Bazball' player, be interesting to see how he goes in the next Ashes series here, can see him being very effective on our pitches and could put our bowlers under the pump.

I’d be attacking him around the wicket and getting in very tight at him - not allowing him to free his arms

He’ll get his chance to find out all about the pitches in the Big Joke!
