One thing I want to know about the whole Hawthorn situation - where was the president and founder of Beyond Blue when all this was happening.
I am no fan of Kennett, but if he was implicated in any way i can’t see him not being all over the article.

him being involved would have made it a much bigger story than it already was.

I also feel that if the belief was that he didn’t do enough to stop this from happening that would have been a focus of the article also.

but hey, who knows, CEO’s/presidents/politicians have a good way of being Teflon when it comes to this stuff and Jeff would certainly be skilled in this area. I just think that the journo involved is a highly credentialed, ‘no fear’ kind of reporter so if he thought kennett was at fault in any way that he would have called that out for all to see.

From the presser just completed by Hawthorn, the review wasn't commissioned due to anything alleged. It was just a fact finding mission to see how First Nations players experiences were at Hawthorn and if the could supply additional support post playing.

In this instance I don't see why he would have been consulted.
You are correct. All I am pointing out is that the review did not hear from all the people involved.

Seems like some pretty weird moral hedging going on in here based on the fact that you cannot prove a negative.

"We can't definitively prove that no Geelong player ever did anything as bad as what the Hawthorn coaches are alleged to have done, so therefore we shouldn't praise the club's culture or say that we're glad to follow a club that isn't involved in similar scandals."

You are missing the point.

the point is that most of us are so jaded about footy in general that it is hard to believe that any clubs are cleanskins.

ezra bray wasn’t that long ago

The fact it was so recent is alarming

Bloody hell isn't it nice supporting a club that's never at the centre of scandals involving racism, criminals, bikies, supplements etc?

Not sure we can really be so definitive that our club isn't free from its own issues, when it could simply be that we've not found ourselves in situation that's blown up like things did for Essendon, Collingwood or Hawthorn

We've found ourselves in situations that we didn't handle well at the time, but where it appears we learnt from our mishandling of things and used that to improve in the future - such as with Ezra Bray

Where is Clarko?

Weren't the AFL expected to make an announcement about him this afternoon?
As per 7 afternoon news & Tom Browne (I'm blocked on Twitter so can't confirm), Clarkson had advised that he won't begin his time at North Melbourne until after the completion of the investigation

I honestly was in shock reading this, so horrific that you wish it isn’t true, Clarkson and Fagan and Burt will have a chance to reply but if even a fraction of it is true would see their legacy tarnished and they shouldn’t be anywhere near administration in the AFL

This is the story of the year, might be the biggest since the Essendon drug saga
Before I read the article I thought, Nah nothing about Hawthorn shocks me.

After reading it I'm astounded

I guess we'll find out eventually. However, it is highly possible he knew nothing about it, especially if these things were done solely within the football department and the CEO and Board were kept in the dark about it. I'm not saying this is the case, but until we get all the facts, lets not jump to conclusions about Kennett just because we all hate him.

Man to be fair to News Corp one of their reporters wrote a book on the culture within AFL administration last year that (as Russell Jackson pointed out in the ABC) got absolutely memory-holed because Nine, which dominates footy media, wouldn't discuss it.
You are right. The book, The Boys’ Club, received very little coverage despite its extensive investigation into how the AFL works. Caroline Wilson did mention it at least once on Footy Classified but it got little publicity.

Just imagine for a moment this report came out about Geelong and how you would feel knowing that men you have admired, respected, and even loved have done such terrible things. That's why I think we should all have some empathy for Hawks fans today. This is bigger than our tribal dislike of each other.
I feel sick thinking about it when it's my most hated team. I can't even comprehend how I'd feel if it wasn't a club I wanted to burn to ashes beforehand anyway
