Paywalled.
What happened?

Ex-AFL player Eli Templeton was rushed to hospital on Saturday after a sickening on-field incident which resulted in a game being called off.

The former St Kilda player suffered a fractured skull after being bumped over a fence and hitting his head on concrete...

...
The incident occured as players chased the ball over the boundary line.

Templeton was sent over the boundary fence by a heavy bump from Clarke, landing on conrete near the coaches’ box, knocking him unconscious.

Clarke was reported for the hit.

Apparently there wasn't actually much in the bump and just an unfortunate incident

On himself to kick certain goals.

The work ethic is not really the issue; it's all about confidence with him. His work ethic in year one, when he played EVERY game and romped in the Rising Star Award, was exemplary. Even that final against us , when he came back from suspension, he was great.

I know that from within Collingwood he was seen as a prodigiously talented youngster that struggled to embrace the professionalism required to play AFL. Hence the reason he was offered up fo trade.

I only went and saw a handfull of games

But way back - when Geelong West when they were in the VFA - their home ground - well in between the boundary line and the fence - there was a conctrete bike track/veledrome cambered on about a 30 to 40 degree angle

And i can still picture this - players running full pelt for the ball - like Cameron did last night in the last qtr - but he used the fence to brace himself - well you couldnt do that at Geelong West - they would be running - they would go over the boundary line - and then suddenly be on this angled concrete bike track at full pace ( with the old football stops on ) and gingerely trying to come to a halt - how someone didnt fall over and fracture their arm - or badly graze their knee is beyond me

That was so dangerous
