This is an opinion-based forum, isn't it?? Don't rate him as highly as others, butchers the footy which escapes criticism. Others are smashed for it but this kid slides under the radar. I'm keeping him accountable unlike most on this site. And Yes I'm fine, thanks for asking!

Just a side note: Port Adelaide have scored more points (63) from Bergman’s intercepts than any other player.

Bar his delivery by foot! The data backs this up, he cooks it. Watch.

Yep. Anyone who wants to use kicking stats might as well wear a sign that says I’m a nuffie.

A player who chips the ball sideways will get a perfect disposal while a player who takes the game on will often not.

Even the kick ratings that are supposed to account for difficulty etc are obviously incapable of offering a reliable measure - they listed Dbj as the best kick under pressure in the afl in 2022. The year every port fan wanted him taken out the back and shot for his poor disposal, and whose disposal under pressure is exactly why he got turfed out of defence this year.

Not everyone can be or has to be a midfielder. Bergman's greatest strengths as a player are his reading of the play and his closing speed, both of those strengths are best utilised where he is. I'm more than happy for him to play 250 games for us off of half back.

Neville Hayes and Geof Motley did ok back there playing 250 games each …. (and winning 17 premierships and 6 BnF’s combined)

Reminds me of the terrifying early-century Brisbane midfield, they had a group of champions who all had different strengths and ways to hurt.

JHF will be Voss
Butters is the new Black
Rozee is Akermanis
Bergman = Lappin
McEntee = Luke Power

:winkv1:

Drew is closer to Black than Butters.
They’re very different players in my opinion. Both highly skilled but butters way more dynamic and flamboyant

I'd go as far as saying his skillset would be somewhat wasted in the midfield. He's a huge part of what makes our defence work this year.

With his athletic traits it is waste to have him in his current key back post
Its simply due to poor list management
Bingo.

He's been awesome in defence because we lack KPDs. I mean, they put him on the best tall forward in the comp last game.

But Bergman has a lot of skills and potential and those types of players need to be at least trialled in the midfield. If he can make an impact on the midfield that he has down back, we have four elite midfielders in the team. Midfield has more impact than defence.

The other more intangible element I love about Miles Bergman is that he's taken his spot in the team with real force and delivered maximum impact in many different roles which is quite amazing for such a young lad. As it has been stated, his kicking is a bit down but everything else is borderline elite.

It is that attitude and impact and force that the likes of Rozee and Butters have made to transform our team and Bergman and Horne-Francis both seem to have it in spades and they can do the same in the midfield [or elsewhere] in the future.

Watching Nathan Broad tonight and seeing Callum Wilkie come on this year - Bergman feels like he could really become that sort of mould of player. I'd expect he will end up a better player than Broad, but it seems like the player that every team is now trying to find. It's not just your big key defender being an interceptor, its a smaller guy who can intercept mark and then push up to join in for link up play. Seems to add a new dimension when pushing from the backlines to the forward lines (not that it worked for Richmond tonight).

I think Wing with stints in midfield or halfback as requeired is his long term future

Marking wings athletic as he is would be a weapon

Chewy has mentioned that internally he is seen in the same tier as Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis. I agree with this assessment but am unsure how he sees significant midfield minutes barring a bad injury run. In the meantime, he's more than useful in the backline or on a wing.
