Player Watch Pick #14 (2019) - Miles Bergman

Chewy has mentioned that internally he is seen in the same tier as Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis. I agree with this assessment but am unsure how he sees significant midfield minutes barring a bad injury run. In the meantime, he's more than useful in the backline or on a wing.

This doesn't surprise me. I think he could sneak in minutes next year with a big preseason coming into the midfield. He could easily beat out Wines, Drew and Boak for minutes in the guts and play the rest of the time down back or on the wing or wherever we need him. He is that versatile.

Not everyone can be or has to be a midfielder. Bergman's greatest strengths as a player are his reading of the play and his closing speed, both of those strengths are best utilised where he is. I'm more than happy for him to play 250 games for us off of half back.

I disagree that his closing speed and reading of the play are his two greatest strengths but they are high up there. It is just that they are on show where he is playing at the moment. Those two skills will also translate to the midfield. His marking and contested marking is elite. Also Bergman was playing wing to start the year so he has a big tank. He is also a gym rat so he has great strength. At 189cm he gives us a bigger bodied midfielder.

It doesn't surprise me that he is considered on the same page as Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis down at the club.

You can get guys like Jonas playing the 3rd tall in defence. He is definitely a need down back this year and a bit of a savior if truth be told but Rozee and Butters were outstanding forwards who had the skills to pay the bills and were eventually given a chance in the midfield and it has paid off handsomely.

I think he is needed down back this year but will be moved around where needed which has happened the whole year. He has been outstanding as the 3rd tall and his one game as a KPD was excellent but he is oozing midfield potential and I have a feeling that in some time, perhaps with a preseason with the mids under his belt, he will get his chance.

Worst case scenario, he dominates as 3rd tall, KPD. Best case scenario, he elevates our midfield with the Hornet next year with our two leaders to beyond the West Coast/Brisbane Lions midfield of yore.

Has he signed?

Miles has a new name 'Bergman the Butcher' due to his horrendous kicking ability. 63% eff and 5 clangers per game. OVERRATED!!

I'd trade him and bank the picks.
I too, refresh the stats screen instead of watching the game when it's on. Nothing gives you a better feel for the game than staring at numbers

You need stars all over the park, not just the midfield. Right now he's excelling at half back. Won't be surprised in the slightest if he turns into a true star of the game across half back. Long term you need a few more mids going through the rotation once Boak and Wines eventually move on, but I think moving him to the midfield in the next 12 months would be the wrong move given how well he is playing in his current role.

Excellent news that he is staying when I had been preparing myself for him to be out the door.

Have wanted him in the midfield the last 18 months but seeing how well he’s been developing down back, I think we should leave him there to keep developing back there when we have other options in the middle now.

Basically the same height and weight as Tom Stewart. That’s the type of player and role we should be aiming to develop Bergman into down back. That mix of counter attack, intercepting and defending ability is all there in Bergman and offers a huge point of difference down back.

He was good again tonight . His strengths down back are his positioning and his marking, so he needs to keep taking the marks and he did again tonight .
would think he’ll be an A grader within two years
