Toast Pick #22 Welcome to Carlton Joshua Bootsma

WH talking about him.

Quick, good decision maker, great spoiler and good kick.

Add to that great balance and reader of the play.

Can see him developing into a solid mid. Welcome to Carlton mate! :D:thumbsu:

Where did you rate him, Splendini, and what do you think was the knock on the likes of Murdoch that made us pass him up?

In the end I had bootsma at 9. Murdoch doesn't seem to have quite as much mongrel as Josh and his footy smarts have been questioned. I like bootsma's attack at the contest. Pretty sure ratts was keen on blokes who can win one on ones. I think we had a plan for the ready made tall and stuck with it. I had previously heard Rowe linked to gws so maybe he wouldn't be there in the Rd.

Weardon and taggert were two I really liked for the RD that didn't get through :(

I like the fact that he has pretty sticky hands, both for marking and picking the ball up in traffic. Seems to be very adaptable to being able to play different positions. Good spoiling as a defenders, clean hands below knees for playing through the midfield.

A very interesting prospect.

Welcome to the club Josh.

Will release Russell/Duigan to the midfield to add some grunt?

Looks like he has the skills required to make us better.

Although I've got no doubt the kid can play, another tall/skinny defender?

Not too fussed though, it was a thin draft afterall so if he turns out to be decent pickup then that's a bonus.

I think he'll end up more versatile than that. Looks stronger than his 74kg suggests and a lovely frame

He looks like he could come on late in a final and cause damage with his disposal and pace. I'm going to pencil him in as a sub for the prelim.

What? Did I go too early?

This made me laugh.

Can't say I know too much about bootsma but seems like an exciting pick. With Buckley at 62 (which from reports was worth 15-30) and Sam Rowe locked in at 44 this is our usual '62' pick.

I can't wait to see what the kids got.

Seriously impressive highlights package. His kicking ability off both feet has to be one his strengths. Could really see him playing on a wing in a couple of years time. Nice to see someone hit targets from 50+ metres.
I believe Wayne Hughes was a Victorian based recruiter for Fremantle the year they drafted Mundy. I hope Bootsma build his endurance so he can move to the wing or midfield like the Docker. We might see this midfield once Judd, Scotland and Simpson are gone

C: Bootsma Robinson Lucas
R: Kreuzer Gibbs Murphy

Not a bad place to start with Yarran, Walker, Buckley, Russell, Tuohy and other players around the mark.

Bootsma would have been best available, but I guess we rated our inside mids after we passed on Kerridge and Ross.

Adding another tall, fast outside mid to the list is not such a bad thing. Watched that highlights package again, and I'm very happy with this selection. Apart from his height, pace and skill, he's got a competitive attitude and seems good defensively and in attacking mode. Looks a natural footballer. Might be light, but has a big frame that could stack it on. There's plenty of upside. The biggest weakness at this stage is the fact that his name wasn't mentioned enough in the media and footy forums pre-draft. Hughes has no doubt been tracking the guys development for a while. Gotta trust that. The only way to do well in these heavily compromised drafts is to find gems others don't know about.

:)

Look at the video highlights he looks like an elite kick off both right and left which we can always use.

Body shape looks like he could really put on some size - big shoulders from what I can see.

... and you know the old saying ' Big Shoulders...Big ????' :D

What you saw was a HIGHlights package. Make a package of all my best kicks for the year and I look like an elite kick.

It's hard to judge off one video.

I noticed that those no-hoper mob from GEELONG think enough of MURDOCH to draft him. I guess STEPHEN WELLS has no idea how to pick players for the future, does he ?!?!?! OPPS !!!

Can you post YouTube videos shorter than 5 seconds? :p

I'm sure SR and our WA watchers rate his kicking beyond YouTube clips

ARe you all there? I loved murdoch too, and think wells is a brilliant recruiter. You just took 2 and 2 and came up with 5. Think then post

They must really rate him to select him above the likes of Kersten, Murdoch, Elton etc

Hopefully he can stack on some size and become a Joel Corey like outside linking midfielder and use some of his elite disposal while on the run to hit up forward targets and launch some goals from outside 50!

This is the Bootsma thread.

Take it to their board where you can post the startling fact that Geelong passed on Murdoch twice.

welcome to carlton bootsma.
people on here should ease up a bit, tbe bloke just got drafted and he looks a interesting prospect, give hima chance to prove himself, feels like the 2008 draft after we got yaz, although Josh is nowhere as talented as Chris, still you people need to learn to trust our recruiters.
I really do hope Bootsma does well and prove all doubters wrong and shout them some humble pies.
In Hughes We Trust.

Murdoch was picked by Geelong at Pick 48 (their 3rd pick) and was not rated or thought of as highly compared to 47 other draftees. Maybe the draft talent was just thinning out at that stage - it would seem so with Sellars coming in soon after at Pick 54.

Murdoch was probably just the best available at that stage and any team with Pick 48, not just Geelong, would've drafted him.

Welcome to the Blues Josh! From what I've read on the Drafts and Trading board, he seems like a talented player.

It'd be interesting to know the thought-process behind selecting another HBF/3rd tall type. Personally, I was hoping we'd take Kersten or Grigg with 22, but I look forward to seeing this guy play in the Navy Blue.
