Toast Pick #22 Welcome to Carlton Joshua Bootsma

Far too early to speculate if he will make it or not.... all we can do is put our trust into WH and hope he is a player for the future. He obviously wasnt recruited to fill a imidiate need (as we dont have any gaping holes) so he must of been viewd as the best available talent at the time, that will be able to provide something for us in the future. He comes into a great club and will have plenty of time to develop.

Must be stressful for a draftee because not only is it difficult to get picked up by a club, but there's many clubs that will always be mediocre basket cases. Getting to Carlton would be a dream come true. You have the chance of playing in premiership teams, playing in front of 90k at the G on a regular basis, and playing alongside the very best talent in the AFL, plus have access to Carlton's outstanding player development facilities. It doesn't get much better than that for a new draftee. No wonder he's excited.

:)

On the draft board some guy Paul Sheahan did his top 30 & had Bootsma at NO.2.

Who is he and does he have a credible reputation.

Apparently his top 30 all went in the top 39.

Can the board please also remember this guy is going to take a good 12-24 months before we start to see his potential. This kid will take plenty of development before he is ready for AFL football.

He is physically underdeveloped, he has come from country football and only just started playing colts football.

Don't start crying when a more physically developed recruit starts playing from day one and wonder why we did not pick that kid.

Very good call mate.

A good few peole on here follow this mantra, but many look only as far as the next game.

Perfect example is rich vs yarran. (see the yarran>rich thread)

After hearing the rationale, I
Am very excited. I don't get too excited by YouTube recruiting or highlights packages. Is shite for football transfers and is shite in judging afl talent. However, combining his proven athletic attributes, with the high regard and planning WH has for him, I am
Very excited. It is these sorts of
Picks that can lead to a 10year premiership window, rather than two or three. I think our list will give it a good shake for the next decade, really
Only peaking in 3 or more years.

Right now we have two superstars. In 3 years, I
Expect us to have 6 or 7. We will be very tough to beat.

Welcome JB.

He was a good cricketer, but I think he stole Kevin Sheahan's list. Pity the national draft isn't done in alphabetical order :p

Have to give all draftees at least 2 years before you make serious calls about them.

Would have to think Yarran is getting ready to play midfield and Touhy can take one flank and maybe Bootsma will eventually replace him there.

I would love to see a vid of their low lights so we could judge them about their deficiencies.
Nah,the fluff vids are better to watch.

his highlights are very impressive, his spoiling technique looks perfect, something Watson didn't have down pat. Seems to have a good kick and quick vision and a fair bit of pace and desire to run with it. This guy could actually be a bit of a player for us.

Nop, Bootsma was recruited by Carlton as a tall, fast skillful outside mid. Hughes stated that Carlton got his junior club to play him on the wing while they were evaluating him. Seems he's been on Carlton's radar for a while. One that stuck under everyone's guard until very late. We pounced.

:)

I think this is a smart pickup. If you look at our backline it could have some holes in the near future. Bower is no certainty to stay (hope he does), Duigan is in his late 20's, Scotland as good as he is playing may only have 1 more year after this one. Of course we don't want to waste Yarran's talents as a half back so I assume we have plans for him to move up the ground.

Agree, he was drafted with the future in mind. So there's plenty of time for Boots to muscle up! ;)

First of all I know nothing about him. Or any other draftee.
But I'm happy with the selection and the reasoning behind it.

Yes we absolutely want to win a flag in the next 3 years. But succession planning is critical to ensure we don't fall away again after that.

They liked what they saw of him on a wing so he's obviously versatile. Which is a definite trend amongst our list.

We do have plenty of half backs but almost all of them have secondary positions. Yarran might spend time at Half back this year but he'll eventually play midfield. Gibbs has finished his time as a half back (maybe the odd spell down there). Scotland and Duigan are getting on.
You can't get enough quick, skillful, 190cm versatile athletic footballers.

Clearly a key forward or another midfielder would have been of more importance but give me the better player 99 times out of 100. That's the way Hughes has mostly gone and look at the shape our list. Trust him.

I like what I see from the uTibe clip!

But does it really matter who he is? This guy is going to wear Blue next year! I'll support him till he doesn't! Welcome Boots!

So I played colts footy with this guy two seasons ago. He played half back for North Albany, and would sometimes play in the ruck with me (I would play rover).

Firstly, I was very surprised to see him go up in the draft. The general feeling around town was that he got to South Freo on his surname. A wide feeling was that he'd fall to Fremantle in the 30's. To see him go to the Blues at pick 22 is astonishing. It's both surreal and, to me, questionable.

I am not an AFL drafter. In my seventeen years on earth, I've not played a game of AFL football. I never will. This isn't a case of sour grapes, but I am simply surprised.

Here's what I remember from him...

As you know, he's skinny. Behind me and another bloke, he was the skinniest at North Albany. Yet he had a pretty strong ability in the ruck, and at manning up. Quite often he'd be able to take marks from centre half back - not unlike Luke McPharlin. A relatively strong sense of positioning. Secondly, his speed was not something to dismiss. Quite often, his chases would be 'moments of the match' type things. A knack for getting holding the balls. Though sometimes, he was prone to giving away free kicks through push in the backs - though I've been told South Fremantle ironed that out (to as big an extent as possible).

Arguably the best skill he has is a neat technical ability. Do you remember being a kid and going for a kick with your old man? And he'd make you kick on your left, get your handballs firm, and tell you how to get a "perfect, classic, Lockett-like grip"? I guess you could look at Bootsy and say, "yeah, his dad taught him the ins and outs". His kicking is what you want (and need) in a half back - that accurate, long punt. Under pressure he had some real ability to keep his skills tidy. An attribute that can be questioned at AFL level. He was pretty.. uh... confident at training, so i'm sure self doubt won't stop him from keeping that skill at this high level.

I definitely see him as a centre half back. Yet country colts is a far cry from elite football for one of Australia's biggest sports teams. If he can bulk up in four years, I'd like to see him playing that position. Yet for an interim period, half back flank would flatter his chasing ability.

Good luck to him, though. It's going to be really weird seeing him on television or at games.

Any more queries, and I'm more than happy to answer.

You see, I had just started playing club footy, maybe I was 7 or 8, and I needed footy boots. The Ol’ Man was keen for me to play footy, “your uncle is a VFL star, makes great money,” he’d say, “he’s even bought himself a Laundromat for when his playing days are over. But you have to learn to kick with your left foot first. Kick left foot then Laundromat.”
This......
