I don't care how hard it was, unpopular opinion but you see the job through. You defend what is yours. We needed to defend our flag, across all levels of the club. Everyone does their bit. He was bloody good at his role, and he left us when he's never been more important.

Harsh on Bucky. You just told him, almost Hinkley style, to keep working for longery...

Bucky became CEO of DFEEST in 2005. Bit more in that than in hosting %$^&ing Sunrise. And he stayed there far longer than, say, Kane at the MFS.

I recall him years later saying "at some point your life no longer centres on your footy club winning on the weekend". Burnout, priorities, whatever. Of all our folks you can't accuse Bucky of not seeing a job through unless you think he was crowned King of Alberton for life and very selfishly abdicated.

[edit] As for some of his successors...

The difference is their coach is well aware that it it's not a given to back it up, the guy is at least a winner and hates losing.
Well that used to be the old Port Adelaide way.
Worst thing any team could get is playing Port the week after they lost.
You knew they would come out both barrels blazing.
Fast Forward to 2022 and it’s ….. well someone has to lose.

Something changed after 2004 and I can't point out the moment it did.

Up until then there was the belief that we were bulletproof, since then we have been fragile.
You could even argue that in the week leading up to the 2007 grand final we still had that same bulletproof belief.

Perhaps it's fair to say we still have not reacted to 2007 in the way we need to.

What does that reaction need to be?
We need to fight tooth and nail to be the best at everything, and never take no for an answer.
The best coaches, the best players, the prison bars, everything.
Courage needs to be shown to turn surviving into thriving into dominating.
Reading your post reminded me of what I used to say to my wife, post 2004. When is our club going to grow up and be a real AFL club.
There have been times times where I thought we had finally become the tough AFL team I dreamed of but after hearing what Boak, Jonas and Dixon had to say after our 2021 preliminary disaster and after missing the finals this year, we have a long way to go.

The only explanation I can come up with is, leadership, not just on the ground but from the board to the chairman, CEO and most of all from the head coach. There seems to be no real accountability on any level, just noises from our toothless tiger in David Koch.

I was always taught to lead be example but if it's not coming from above the players will continue to think they are doing their best and change will never happen. Just my take on things.

Winning premierships requires being harsh sometimes.

Watching the SANFL GF and Mitch Harvey is fading into a warehouse. He's listed at 100kgs, I'd put my money on 125+

Fat blokes go well at this level.

Strachan from the crows had no idea how to ruck against him. It's a rope and water bag trip to get around him. Don't have that in the AFL.
