ABC are reporting that a decision on Tasmania's bid for an AFL licence could be finalised before the end of next week. Reports are the AFL Presidents will recommend expanding the competition to 19 teams instead of doing what they should do and relocating a Melbourne team to Tassie. That means a bye to appease the Melburnians.

The Melbourne teams are always going to have a majority around the table and they are not going to vote one of their number into relocation.

No doubt rushed to get something else into the media narrative.

Or else it's bad news that they want to hide under the narrative.

Imagining DeGoey discussing negotiating away those behavioural clauses in his contract during trade week.

“Which one did you insist on them taking out?”

At least that means there will be pressure on bringing in a 20th team sooner rather than later, and that team you would think would most likely be non-Victorian, making it 10:10. That's probably the best we can hope for.

The problem is we can never rely on the other non Vic clubs to stand with us against the AFL. The NSW and Qld clubs are compromised by AFL hand outs and concessions and the Crows are just plain piss weak. It would be nice if the non Vic clubs would get organised on issues such as programming but we know they won't.

What seems weird to me is that this same nonsense is nowhere to be seen in the NRL where the balance is 8:8 (soon to become 8:9). You never hear any journalist referring to "non-Sydney" or "interstate" teams, and indeed several Sydney teams have merged or disappeared in my supporting lifetime.

It's as if the NRL actually wants to become a force in different markets. What a stupid concept

Forget about other clubs. We can't even rely on us to stand up for ourselves. We are just as beholden to the AFL as they are.

Not directly, but there'd be some collar tugging going on at North Melbourne right now about whether to vote for Tassie. If Tassie gets a license, I can't see them and the Hawks playing home games there for lots of cash going forward. The AFL will want the new club to have a clear run at it. If the AFL doesn't go completely boys club and save Clarkson (always a chance), then North are back to the unattractive destination, with loss of one of their key revenue streams disappearing coming up. No AFLW largesse to clear the debt like has recently happened. They'll be royally stuffed.

That simple geo- grouping is bogus for AFL and doesn't map usefully to an NRL comparison for historical and structural reasons.

Two (probably three if you include us) non-Vic AFL clubs are effectively controlled from AFL House. The little Vic clubs depend on the big Vic clubs to act in coalition with them, and the non-Vic-but-Vic-controlled clubs serve to cement perpetual top level control over a few actually independent non-Vic clubs. Well at least this is a sporting competition, if not sporting competition.

The NRL on the other hand is now the sporting appendix to a group of huge pokies clubs. The tail became the dog. Consider how different the revenue streams are when you look at the "teams in the NRL competition" in terms of their top level owners, sorry financiers and compare that set of companies to the set of AFL clubs. There would be a lot more financial angst if a Leagues Club lost their license to operate than if the Leagues Club's sports team lost their spot in the top level of the comp.
