It indicates they don't rate them and won't rookie them anyway I'd imagine.

You are probably absolutely right about that but it does seem strange when both Rome and Louie looked pretty promising when they played for the Maggies. They are unlucky that they were in a strong draft year and we didn't have many list spots open. Trent Burgoyne was not a patch on Rome but he was rookied. The announcement also raises questions about where the recruiters see Benny Barrett in the draft. I'd be annoyed if we took him in the national draft given our final pick is slated to be at pick 45. There are more than a dozen players rated higher than Benny Barrett that will still be available in the draft at that point. I'm hoping he's only considered for the CAT B rookie draft.

If they nominate them, they must list them. We'd be 100% certain to list Barrett if he gets through the main draft.
I wouldn't expect that Rome is totally ruled out, but right now the recruiters are probably unsure of where our picks will end up, and who'll be left in the rookie draft and probably don't want to commit to the F/S boys if there's someone we were keen on there.
I suspect that there is still a chance though on our rookie list for Rome, will just need to see how it all falls.
If not, I would be surprised if Montgomery & Rome don't join Francou on our SANFL list under the futures rule.
Hinkley probably doesn't want to hear the words "son of 2004 premiership player ...."
We clearly dont develop them as well as other clubs. Look at the father sons from the Brisbane dynasty

Jase Burgoyne took some time to reach the level, I have no doubt Rome would be similar with some time in the AFL system.
I would be shocked if he is not on an AFL list next year, and I would be disappointed if that was with another club.

Plenty of potential f/s are not up to it and to expect them all to be blessed with Dad's talent is moronic tbh you can't coach something that's not there.

A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player’s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player

I also thought this. When we rookied Trent Burgoyne in 2019 we nominated him as a rookie prior to the national draft.
Might be a recent rule change?

My understanding is we can't automatically list anyone but Barrett.
We will have to draft Rome, Louie, etc at the picks we have. That's the only option. If you haven't nominated, you can't change your mind and automatically claim them.
In the past, a nominated FS must be put on the main list, or you had to directly nominate them as rookie with no ability to match in the main draft. However this year, nominated FSs could be taken as main or rookies if not main drafted by anyone. It basically means you just nominate and can take them at any time.
New rule:
"More flexibility in the drafting of father-son prospects as primary-listed players or rookie-listed players. Current rules mean clubs have to nominate before the national draft if a player will be a national or rookie father-son, with the tweak giving more scope to make decisions during the live draft."
I think next year the rule changes and F/S, like NGA, can be pre-listed as Cat A rookie before rookie draft if they make it through National Draft

Port have signed Rome up for the sanfl side.
Exactly the right thing to do.

I think we will take Rome not in the MSD but as a F/S in 2025 or 2026.
As I wrote in another thread: Why pick him up in 2024 when he would be behind Bergman, Farrell, Jones, DBJ, Sinn, his brother, Burton, Williams, Evans and Atkins for a half back role when we can nominate him in 2025 or 2026 in a weakened draft?
This way we still get to develop him and get him used to our systems and he only takes up a AFL list space when he is a chance to play. In other words, we are simply “storing a nut for the winter” that is three upcoming, compromised drafts.

What's happening with Montgomery, is he with the Magpies as well or still at North Adelaide?
Doubt Monty would want anything to do with the place. Why would he? He will make better money playing for a SANFL team
