Because the alternative is Jolly plays 90% of the game in the ruck, gets tired in the 4th quarter and struggles to get up for next week.

But... there's an 8 day break instead of 7. If Q4 next Friday is like Q4 last night, perhaps the rucks aren't needed as much - the stoppages slowed right down by then. It was mainly ping pong for the last 15 minutes.

There is no chance Ben McGlynn will play. I've strained, pulled, torn my hamstring thoughout my own career and you feel great staying off it for a week. You go to training and try to get into a sprint but there is no confidence. There is no chance he'll risk it two weeks later in a PF. If anything, he'd be lucky to get up for the GF if they make it.

He has struggled to play 5 games in a row against quality opposition in the last two years.

We need to play it smart and rucking Jolly for the whole game after three hard weeks already is just too much of a risk.

Those suggesting Jolly plays fwd and let wood ruck listen up...

There is a reason this has never worked. Jolly plays his best footy back to the wall and up against it. He is not a dangerous forward when manned by a permanent defender. Only really threatens when he pushes forward off the opp ruckman. He is slow on the lead, not amazing at positioning and doesn't usually have a good leap on him (though he has done before off the back of NicNat)..

The coaches have recognised this. Wood is just as slow and worse at contested marks. Gets pushed off the ball too easy and is even worse at ground level.

By playing Wood we will not stretch the Sydney defence.. We will make it easier for them to run all over the top of us though. At least Paine has a decent amount of field pressure, good lead up and great hands. He offers us something. The ruck will work itself out, but we seriously lose so much by playing them both. He has had his chance.

Also, i'd like to add that Brown is not an option for the ruck role. The last thing we want with Tarrant retiring is for Brown to do another knee by being forced into the ruck and be down 2 KPDs for next season.

Leaves us with a couple of options.

Tarrant. Goldsack, Cloke.

My vote is with Tarrant. Also forces LRT into defence with Paine, Cloke and Taz up there. Reid and Goodes will be accounted for and the sack can swing fwd or back as required.

Also if it is a wet night, the last thing we need is another lumbering tall. Paine in and sub him for Elliot or Sinkers at the appropriate time.

Would not go anywhere near Wood. No player is a worse pressure player forward of centre and he is not a marking presence or a goal kicking threat. Provides zero tackling pressure and through the ruck is also below average. It's a waste of a player.

Out: Dawes (inj)
In: Paine - keep it simple. The guy competes, can take a mark up forward, tackles and can kick goals. Good learning experience for the guy against a well drilled side and is our best replacement given the circumstances. Sure he won't be able to ruck and doesn't have the endurance of Dawes but otherwise he is as good if not better in other aspects of his game. *Leaving Goldsack/Maxwell to be backup ruckmen. Jolly loves the responsibility so he just needs to work hard in his recovery to make sure he's fresh.

Possible out: Didak (inj?) - need more details.
Possible in: Sinclair is the likely replacement.

But we don't have Maxwell this week.

I am almost inclined to agree on Paine, but we just need SOMETHING for the second ruck. Maybe you are right - Wood probably isn't the answer. Can Paine take the centre bounces (even though he will lose) when Jolly is cooked?

I must have been tired last night.

Forgot about Maxwell but Goldsack should be ok. Has an ok leap and at ground level with his tackling will compete well. For 10% ruck minutes he should be ok.

No Changes.

Firstly- Didak is not injured he just lacks match fitness, thus him playing as the sub. He dominated the first half, but unfortunately that is all we can get out him at the moment. He will be the sub next week.

Dawes will play, say what you want about him, but he has heart.

Key Issue is stopping Goodes, has been in some good form over the last few weeks.

S.Reid VS B.Reid
Goodes VS Tarrant
Jetta VS Toovey
LRT/Pyke VS Brown
Morton VS O'brien
rotating mid VS Shaw/Johnson

Dawes is zero chance with a medial tweak like that. Will be sore as hell today, doubt he'll get up for the GF either. Leaves us with a big problem in the 2nd ruck - doubt we can play wood, and Paine as the obvious replacement can't ruck. I don't mind the idea of Nathan brown giving jolly a chop out for a few mins each quarter, at least he has the massive frame to not be monstered. Reid will take Reid and tarrant can take Roberts - Thomson , means brown can take Pyke so when pyke gives Mumford a chop out brown just follows him. Best solution I think

We have been building up really well over the last couple of weeks, Saturday night had we kicked straight we would have won by 5-6 goals, while Dawes will be a blow, Goldsack can chop out with Pendles the third man up, I wouldn't completely rule out Dawes, we don't know for sure the extent of the injury.

I am very confident we will get over the line this week, and then anything can happen in GF's nothing is a given, Hawthorn will have all the pressure on them, we will have an extra days break, the hunger from loosing last year and a press and pressure that seems have built up nicely over the past fortnight.

Make no mistake we can win the GF this year.

COLLINGWOOD is hopeful that star forwards Chris Dawes and Alan Didak will be fit for Friday night's preliminary final in Sydney.

Dawes (knee) and Didak (calf) were the Pies' major concerns after their 13-point win over West Coast at the MCG on Saturday night.

Didak was among Collingwood's best players in the first half against the Eagles, but was subbed out at three-quarter time.

Dawes left the field with a knee injury in the fourth term and was clearly hampered when he returned.

Club medicos examined both players on Sunday and said neither player required scans.

"The doctors looked at them this morning and will assess them again tomorrow morning but at this stage there is confidence that both will come up," Magpies football director Geoff Walsh said.

"There were no scans taken this morning and importantly both Chris and Alan are optimistic. It remains to be seen how the week unfolds for them but right now we think they are a good chance to be on the plane."

McGlynn is a big loss for them and there is no way he will be back this week. Some of the match ups that I would like to see are Toovey on Jetta again, Reid on Reid and also Goldsack on Goodes.

Looking at the teams on paper we still seem to have the players that can match up well on their players. I don't see an area on the ground that I would be very worried about when I look at their team and say to myself man we got no chance against them in that area, unlike WCE we had to stop their ruckmen who are the best combo in the comp and their very tall forward line and did it well. The Swans have a pretty good midfield and I rate it top 2 along with ours, so it's going to be a tough contest especially in the middle.

I would not play Dawes because you simply don't take risks in finals with injuries and Paine can offer the same thing in the forward line pretty much. I am also backing Jolly against Pyke and Mumford with a bit of help from Brown and Cloke rucking a bit in the forward line. I would start Didak as the sub this week and only put him on in the 10th min mark of the last quarter unless we suffer an injury earlier.

In: Paine
Out: Dawes

Very early tip: Pies by 11 points.

Dawes Role: Keep a defender accountable, create a contest and 2nd ruck.

What Wood can do: Ruck....

Reasons why Wood can't play forward:

I am still having nightmares of Wood getting out muscled by Bryce Gibbs.
We need separation from our tall forwards, Wood will be trying to hold hands with Cloke.
All Wood has to offer is his height - Witts is bigger.

How about N. Brown trying his luck as a pinch hitting back up Ruckman? It hasn't been suggested. He's tall, strong and I think we have enough tall defenders to cover him against the Swans while he's giving Jolly a rest every now and then?
