We conceded over 100+ points three consecutive weeks in the latter stages of the Home and Away season.

Fly mentioned it as an area we needed to improve on just prior to the finals. We've done that with 31 points conceded against Essendon and 53 this evening.
In dead rubbers. We were trapped in a purgatory of inertia with nothing to play for for nearly 7 weeks. Carlton fell apart the first time they played a dead rubber. Try that for 6 or 7 weeks and see what it does to your mental state. When it mattered, we had the best defense in the comp.

Very satisfying to be safely through to a home Preliminary Final. To avoid playing interstate in a prelim and to now be on the so-called 'easier' side of the draw if there's such a thing is massive.

Melbourne are seriously good opposition and made us earn it. A few shots in front of goal cost them, and we were able to have enough of a buffer to hold them off.

Defence wins premierships, and tonight was a perfect illustration as to why defences are the backbone of any successful team. To give up 69 inside 50s but only concede 53 points (7 goals, 11 behinds) is a remarkable effort by our back six. We're in this great position largely off their back of their performance(s) this evening.

The Maynard incident saddened me and soured the game slightly. First and foremost, I hope Angus Brayshaw is okay and will make a speedy recovery. Whether Maynard is suspended or not, I'm unsure. Part of me thinks in the climate of concussion being such a big talking point nowadays, he might be made an example of and rubbed out for at least the Prelim. The outcome will divide the football public one way or another.

This match weirdly had a 2019 QF vibe to it. Just like that match against Geelong, we led comfortably for most of the night but the opposition came home late and nearly got within touching distance of us. In both finals, we happened to be goalless in the final quarter.

Fly and co will have more selection dilemmas coming with the much anticipated return of N Daicos and possibly Noble if we can find a way to bring him back in.

Looking forward to the rest of the weekend starting off with Carlton choking it up tomorrow night :p

Dead rubber or not, it was a cause of concern for Fly which he believed needed addressing.

At least it appears the issue has now been rectified.

My favourite was when Ginni got his head ripped off and they gave melb a free for HTB.

I think my favourite was the contact below the knees to Petracca when he came in with a wildly swinging leg, while the Pies player tried to pick up the ball. We get kicking in danger paid against us 100 times out of 100 for that.

Loved Q's game, Bobby's goals (although he did try to do too much and should have passed), WHE great game, Sidebottom a finals player and I also like it when Pendlebury (70% TOG) was on Petracca (82%TOG), played him well.

Bit disappointed in Mihocek and Elliott goal kicking. Cox tried hard a couple of times going for mark and spoiling own player.
JDG not his best game (thought he injured himself as saw him leave the ground) but did kick a great goal.

Umpires? Gee I want to buy real estate from the one that paid a 50, didn't think he was ever going to stop. Also why they don't pay free kicks when they are there is beyond my understanding then in the second half start giving them. As a group, they were terrible.
How many Melbourne goals were the result of a free kick?

Forgot: Mitchell was also very good I thought.

He knew exactly what the issue was and mentioned it a number of times. It was all a mental issue. It's rectified because the games matter now.

Maynard is either no weeks or 3+. I go the former.

The concerns

Need to tidy up these areas if we're any chance come PF, luckily for us the dees got the yips in front of the sticks.

i50 differential of -32 usually equates to an absolute belting.

We can't play like that again and expect to win.

Cue in the personal attacks coz these have been mentioned.

Praying like hell we turn it around.

Bigger concern for me was how we went into shutdown mode so early. Those numbers are skewed a bit because of how we just stopped playing in the 4th qtr.

Compare to previous 6wks our defence, contested game and clearance all improved.

Dees forward line lacks game winners and talent. That helped us a lot. We had plenty of numbers back there which means you stop them scoring. Also means it’s harder to get the ball out because their extra numbers are waiting for the exit kick. That was a factor in the i50 numbers, especially the last qtr.

In the end we won thanks to a great start that kept us ahead and put scoreboard pressure on them. A bit concerned about the last qtr.

Yes there were areas that the Pies were beaten tonight but there’s also significant room for improvement. Probably unnecessary to play 2 rucks against Port (assuming that’s the opponent for the prelim) so can bring in Noble for more run. Daicos coming back. De Goey wasn’t hugely influential and Jaicos was terrible.

Maynard saw an opportunity to physical a player under the cloak of plausible deniability and he took it.

I wouldn't expect anything less from my boy in a final.

Maybe....................personally I think he was in the air with no way of controlling his path and did the only thing he could to avoid a front on collision and turned his shoulder to protect himself. A head collision wouldn't have done either player any favours.

Van Rooyens is a thug plain and simple that is the 2nd time this season he has hit someone in the head, there was real intent to hurt McStay, also I would have liked some of Bruzzy,s team mates to back him up a bit more when Viney and others were going at him.
My daughter is dating an AFL footballer who plays for another club.

When we've asked him who are the sh*ttest blokes in the AFL, he's nominated Dayne Zorko and Jacob Van Rooyen

simon goodwin's press conference was interesting. His description of the "incident" in particular, saying maynard "jumped off the ground and knocked a guy out".......and then to contrast that with his description of his player's elbow incident, saying that mcstay kept playing and somehow that balanced out his player's use of the elbow...

i know from reputation that this guy isnt much of a person, and the press conference confirmed that for me. Earlier I heard a talk-back listener dexcribe melbourne as a good list with a shit coach....how eloquent.

Well said, Markfs. Not a likeable man.

What a fckw*t is the coach of Melb.
So happy he’s not our
Coach.

Absolutely threw Maynard under the bus “jumped off the ground and knocked him out”….
Yet when they ask about JVR - “didn’t see it, but pretty sure Mcstay stayed on the ground”.

Which action do you want in the game?
What a complete grub….hope he coaches melb for the next 10 years tbh!!!!!

I heard that call too. He sounded like he’d had a few.

Finally home from the game, with no voice. Still can't believe we are into another Prelim, just a feeling of relief. The last 4 minutes was torturous!!
Brilliant effort from our boys, particularly our defensive six. Tonight showed we do have a defence that can win us a premiership. Thought Quaynor was fantastic all night, and a couple of big marks in the last few minutes.
Loved the games of WHE, Sidey, Bobby Hill, Leggy Markov, Crispy and l thought DeGoey, Mitchell and Coxy had their moments. Also we had minimal input from Jaicos, Elliott and Pendles, which makes the win even better, because those three you'd think would have to be influential during the game, if we were going to win.
l can't see Maynard getting suspended. At the game, from the Punt Road end, it was hard to see what the action was, but looking at the replay of it, l don't think an attempted smother warrants a suspension. It was just unfortunate, in Maynard's momentum, he landed on Brayshaw. If he does get a week, l guess it's IN: Naicos OUT: Bruzzy. Not a bad replacement.
We are now in a brilliant position, with a home Prelim. This is our best opportunity to win a flag this year, but as l am over the moon with the win, it's just the first step towards the premiership.....Love This Club....GO PIES!!

PS...The icing on the cake for this weekend, will be that Sydney beat Carlton. That would make it a brilliant first week of finals.....😊😊
