When Smith Laird and Murphy all make the Round 1 side this place will melt down.

Hinge takes Smith role full time as we Ryan, Worrell, Milera, Cumming all push for those remaining running defender spots. Unless injuries occur, I just dont see how he still makes the best 22. Id expect Smith to have been told that he is unlikely to see many AFL games next year but to perform in the Sanfl to be ready for injuries.

Laird will play. Probably become midfield depth and start on the bench and rotate through with some stints at HB.

Murphy to me just looks like he will be forced out. He is the last of the depth players filling gaps and in my view played that role two seasons too long. Which is an indictment on Nicks not Murphy. Murphy didnt select himself. 4 players come out of our previous best 22 for Peatling, Draper, ANB and Cumming. I just dont see how he survives the cut.

I think it will be players like Dowling, Taylor and Bond who get squeezed out of the 22 by the new recruits rather than Smith/Murphy/Laird.

Internally we would have blamed inexperience for missing the finals in 2024. Now we have a slightly more mature list so we'll start with our oldest available team, apart from maybe Chayce Jones out and Draper + Curtin in.

I'm interested to see what we do with our four tall defenders Murray, Keane, Butts, Worrell. Playing them all would make for a terrible structure but individually all would be regarded as good enough to make our best 22.

Also I hope that if Smith & Murphy are still around the team that we use them in travelling emergency / sub roles that we've previously reserved for young players who are in desperate need of game time.

I fear this to be the case. Id even go so far as to include Curtin. Nicks could very well have a finals or bust attitude from day 1 and this will force out development and keep in mature players. Which sucks. Only player I think will play 90% of games is Draper. Club loves his type. This would also mean fringe players who are senior like Jones and Schoenberg could find themselves first called upon if injuries occur and Dowling, Taylor, Bond and Curtin are stuck in the Sanfl.

I think Smith and Murphy get squeezed out by the new recruits anyway. But agree that probably four of Bond, Curtin, Taylor, Dowling, Peds and perhaps Nank will find it hard to crack round 1 side. ANB, Cumming, Peatling and Draper all playing round 1 is my guess.

Shoey and Jones are that far back now that I wouldn’t be surprised if they never play a single game of AFL again. Not unhappy about it either.

In no world is Harry considered senior enough or reliable enough to be first call up player

This is really jumping at shadows

Smith ain’t player round one - he knows the majority of his last season will be playing in sanfl and he’s accepted that his role will to provide leadership at this level to help the on-field development of younger players like Oscar

Would love to see just a captain and vice captain this year
As strange as it sounds to me Dawson C, Keays Vice... I also think acknowledging a defensive general should be on the cards too. If we don't adopt a take no prisoners style of football this year then we are following a script where we are not the main character. We should be absolutely belting some decent teams this year.

Yeah, Dowling, Taylor and Bond probably aren't first 22 if everyone is fit.

And before everyone rants about that - go do a line-up. It's very difficult to fit them in.

And before we go all "the sky is falling" about Smith, he's ALREADY been dropped for younger talent. We have much too much depth for him to be an option.

DEFENDERS
HB: Isaac Cumming - Mark Keane - Mitch Hinge
FB: Max Michalanney - Nick Murray - Josh Worrell

Depth: Chayce Jones, Luke Nankervis, Rory Laird, Jordon Butts, Wayne Milera, Oscar Ryan, Hugh Bond, James Borlase, Brodie Smith

You're underestimating how Milera is viewed within the Club .....he's best 22 everyday of the week

Let's just see how he goes over the preseason and trial games before we pencil him in as a certain starter in round 1. Quite a bit of competition for spots in that area of the ground.

I want him in the side and at his best he should be, but I suspect with our recruiting we are looking at life without junior.

Gutsy Mutineer .....the old fence sitting position huh

No just the reality of Milera mounting injury list, none of which have been just minor niggles.
The start of PS & Milera isn't being held back ....

Last time he did this injury, he missed most of the PS & never madeup for the lack of hard preparation

The mounting injuries are simply a BF narrative, without foundation

Whats your best 22 look like WW?
Nah mate ....trying to pick sides this far out, just causes you to be a laughing stock .....most just pencil names in based on 2024 form

We simply do not know who will have a breakout summer, or will have a Pedlar type PS

Will Bond improve ? .....do we need a small DEF, for the ever-increasing number of small fwds chased by AFL teams .....Michallaney can do it, but IMO is not the answer

Does Tex get to the starting line R1 ? .....where does Curtin play, and for that matter, where does Dawson play ? .....just too many ????

fair enough, it's all in fun. Just wondered how you'd deploy the troops. I love that Trump is hinting that he'll set his strike units on the cartels, they'd be shitting bricks!

I think Bond has a serious role to play going forward as someone we can deploy to oppo’s best small forward. Some tough calls for the selection panel this year.
