Early favourites for the 2025 flat track bullies tag
Nice to actually win games that we should given we lost to ****ing Richmond last year, and that four of our eight wins were against finalists.

As for flat track bullies. Port. Always Port.

Neither Essendon nor St Kilda are as bad as we made them look.

I mean, they're really bad, but Richmond, WCE and North all look worworse
Are North worse?

We will find out next week.

Essendon kicked 84 points against the Hawks last week too and played pretty well, they never struggle to score, they’re just horrendous defensively. We are finally good enough to properly punish poor defensive teams now, that’s a huge step forward.
Early in season you regularly see higher scores kicked as players are fresh, conditions are better & there's less footage for coaches to dissect to counter sides.

See how it looks in a few weeks as the season starts to really get into it.

Good:
Precision going inside 50 instead of just pounding it in, we definitely have a plan to leave the 35-50 mark open. No matter how close we are.
Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Keays, Rachele are a danger combination.
We needed to beat this side, we did that. I would have taken half that margin and been happy.
Our midfield was bettered by Merrett and Caldwell overall but we did enough to compete.
Tex was great a bit higher up the ground, great position for him with less wrestling and getting killed in packs.

Dan Curtin just did a few more nice things, I'm not sold on him yet but that was much better

Our entire workrate and F50 entry system was of a mature side

Ball control when required, perfectly working our way up the wings the entire game.

Merrett is an absolute gun and is wasted on Essendon who have been inert for 20 years.

Bad:
The umpiring was absolutely awful, we would have won by 80+ if they weren't involved in ensuring Essendon had the biggest armchair ride. Immune to HTB for some reason and are allowed to get spun 360 with no consequences, can kick the ball 12 metres and its a mark, while we kick it 20 and its play on.

Peatling struggled a bit I feel.
Get Draper on for a full game next Sunday.

Ugly:
Nothing, a 10 goal away win against any side is beautiful.
Shiel, Jones, Hobbs are all meh and Ben Mackay is a disgraceful footballer who shouldn't be playing AFL, let alone collecting $1M a year.

This has been an Essendon specific problem for years though. It’s why they paid such big money for McKay (who is dead set average).

And have the highest paid defender in the league.

Dan is building... he was very good in the early and then got a bit quiet and then worked himself back into the game... you can see he will have a 20+ disposal game very soon.
Depends what role he is playing.

13 disposals, 1.0, with two clearances is a decent game for a guy essentially playing as a 4th tall.
