Looking through our stats, there are certainly some highlights on the personal development side of things (seeing a key part of this season is player development, it's probably worth highlighting some of the ones that snuck through).

Nick Murray: 13 disposals/8 intercepts/3 intercept marks/Didn't lose a contested one on one. Improving his intercept production is his ticket to becoming one of the top defenders in the league, and at least for this week, Murray achieved that.

Jordan Butts: 10 spoils/5 intercepts/190 meters gained/100% KE. Good start to the season and looked to be improving on last year seeing he was rock solid defensively.

Lachlan Sholl: 7 ground ball gets so he did a good job on the contested side of things this week. Looks like a solid bounce back to early 2021 form considering the 23 touches.

Josh Rachele: 15 pressure acts/3 tackles on top of the ridiculous output on the offensive side of things. He's already Eddie Betts :).

Ned McHenry received more free kicks then gave away. Miracles do happen. Especially considering he went 25 pressure acts/6 tackles, though his issue has been putting together both a defensive and offensive game together in the same match. He's frustratingly close to becoming a high valuable member of the forward line.

If only he could kick goals.

You could find this repeatedly if you look through the video. Either past the ball, or in poor positions.
I know mate, I noticed it during the game. I lost count of how many times they moved it forward cleanly out of a contest under no pressure at all. Allowed them to deliver the ball to their forwards with accuracy. Our defenders did a good job under those circumstances. Could have been a real blood bath.

I disagree with what Keayes said about the Thilthorpe turnover. The kick was not there. It the context of that match, a short kick inboard instead of going long down the line was a dreadful decision. Incredibly stupid.
Yes I agree too but you can't have a teammate in the media shit on a young kids decision. Thilthorpe would know now he made the wrong decision that cost the game but he needs his teammates support he's already probably feeling pretty shit. All of them out there made mistakes.

You could argue why didn't Keays make better contact with his kick so it would have been untouchable.

We had many opportunities to win which we didn't take and that's why we lost added on the very poor first half. To single out one moment is unfair

Because of this type of stupidity.
I've been banging on about our mids running forward of the contest for a long time, but for some reason it seems ingrained in what we do (one of the reasons I did NOT want an ex-player as our midfield coach). It's great if you win possession, but if you don't the opposition are running free and under little pressure.
This is from the first centre bounce

The ball is loose thanks to a fumble. Schoenberg is on the offensive side. Sloane is at the contest. Both ROB and Keays run past the ball. Look at the huge gap directly forward Fremantle's way) of this ball. We have 4 players past the ball. Only M Crouch is on the defensive side. He is flat footed and tries to intercept the handball. He misses and so we have ZERO defensive coverage. Only a missed kick inside 50 saved us from a goal because of this.
The problem is.. this has been happening for two years atleast now.. its definitely ingrained. Hard to see guys like crouch, Keays, sloane, laird changing now.. its almost habit.

The other thing they do at times is all of them, ROB included, go for the same ball and only one opponent midfielder does.. and the ball ends up squeezing out the back of the contest to two unmanned opposition mids who are then free to run away with it..

Its because all of them are battlers/scrappers, again ROB included, and all they know is “get ball” and so they all go in at once often to end up almost fighting each other for it!.

If one of them does get it.. the other 3 have crowded the area.. now they obviously arent going to get tackled by their team mates.. but their team mates, and their team mates opponents are all now surrounding them giveing them few avenues to exit the contested area with the ball and often the only option is a quick dump kick..

It happens so often.

I just hope the messaging behind closed doors was different. Thilthorpe absolutely deserves to be torn to shreds for that. The campaigner who called for it short also deserves the same.

Our mids play Russian Roulette. Basically run forward at all times. If we get it great. If not, ah well, up to the defenders to sort that out.
This might work if you have the better midfield. But we don't. Ever. It's not a great tactic when you are possibly the worst midfield in the competition.

Especially frustrating given the footage of Nicks giving our players a bake for not knowing how to defend back in 2020. It's been two years and nothing has changed.

I feel one of the worst things Sloane did was pass his shot on goal off to Dawson. Sloane is the captain, we needed the captain to lead by example an give us a much needed goal. If he cannot handle the pressure of a shot on goal he shouldn't be captain, that was pathetic. Dawson barely had a better angle.
Funnily enough, I didn’t mind that - perfect side to give off to a left-footer.
But the rest of Sloane’s game was in keeping with his status as a rapidly fading star.

It's coaching. If the players are doing it against team rules, well then they shouldn't be picked or play midfield. Given the same players play 90% game time in the midfield, you'd think it has to be coached that way - as in, we are ok with it.

Nicks came to the club with a defense first mantra, you think he's ditched that?

Mixed emotions in this game. Firstly we were putrid in the first half. A lot of players looked nervous and very fumbly, including experienced players. We were lucky to be anywhere near them as we should have been about 8 goals down at half time. Did we have too many debutants/Crow debutants/LTI returns?

They left the door ajar and we took full advantage in the third quarter with some exciting clean football. I'd have been asking them to p155 in a cup at 3/4 time such was the stark contrast between the first half and the 3rd quarter.

The last quarter was going ok, and I didn't think Freo had anything left, and thought 3 goals was enough. But for some reason the run stopped, maybe the players also thought they had it won too. Still can't believe we lost. Looked as though we went into our shells, maybe shat the bed.

Best players:
Rachelle - looks an absolute gun and is just so dependable in front of the sticks regardless of the situation.
Rowe - I thought he was crucial in the first half. Decision making and execution stood out amongst the rest of them
Crouch - solid contributor but can't help but think he calls for the ball when he's in a worse position than the player with the ball at times
Keays - good once moved onto the ball. HFF doesn't seem to work for him.
Sholl - good when he came on. Surely is now in our best 22.

WTF is with Himmelberg? I wouldn't even bother playing him. He looks like he knows that he is only there because Tex isn't. He's right, but he doesn't seem to want to take an opportunity at any time.

I'm not sure who on here mentioned Keays traits of doing a full circle to get on his left boot, but that drove me nuts, never really noticed before. Reminds me of Matthew Connell.

Looks like another frustrating year ahead.

commiserations.

A crazy game. You could make a case on freo could of won building up a 4 goal halftime lead.

Crows could of won with that amazing 3rd quarter....

I'm going to Say this... To be brutally honest, this should of been a draw.

Rachele kicking on debut is impressive.

Rowe was one who surprised me. He looks fitter than last year and was good playing up the field. McAdam might have to come back via the SANFL, though I'd consider bringing him in for Milera.

Milera looked very nervous in the first half for mine, and who could blame him, it's been a while.

He looked more settled in the second half and will benefit immensely from getting through the game.

He needs to play if he's fit.

I found it hard to analyse via stats. All stats are tainted by one team simply not being switched on for the first half. When that happens, you can't criticise the game plan, the metres gained, the form/speed/decision-making of players based on stats...and you can't restrict the stats to the second half without it looking like cherry picking.

The Good: No confirmed suicides by Crows fans at half time.

The Bad: Ambos report that ramping was exacerbated by parked Crows players on Sunday afternoon, all the way from the players' race to West Terrace. Oh, and Rachele's miss that cost us the game. :sunglasses:

The Ugly: Longmuir's report that it was the best spoil he has ever seen.

If only he could kick goals.

If he could kick a high volume, we'd be talking about a superstar talent... a Josh Rachele if you will.

Still, it's not particularly necessary to forge a good career as a 5th-6th forward, seeing he could live on being a 10-15 goal per year forward if he can find a bit more consistency in melding his offensive and defensive performances. That said, I don't know how long a 4 score involvement game cuts the mustard if he's not scoring goals.

Thats murray most games IMO.. still, lets see if he can iron it all out with a good number of games in a row..

Yup, still plays like a 10 game defender which is unfortunate.

Hopefully experience cleans up his game, seeing he has the physical traits to be a very good defender.

One positive of note is that we seemed to run out the game well. Even when Freo started winning it at the contest in the last, it looked more like poor decision making than fatigue from our guys. Hopefully Burgo's inclusion is showing some green shoots.

(One exception was Himmelberg who looks constantly gassed)
