An issue that I think is playing a big part in the utterly abysmal standard of umpiring we are currently experiencing is the fact that the umpires seem to have been given a directive to 'coach' the players in every single aspect of the game.Appalling almost the worst I have seen for awhile..a Hawthorn game a few seasons ago was similar
"Back a metre!", "East-west!", "Stay out of the area!" - it seriously never ends. Meanwhile, because they're so fixated on telling the players what to do at all times, they are distracted and missing blatant free kicks. Essentially they are focusing on the wrong things.
What possible justification is there for an umpire to tell a player to stay out of the protected area? If the player runs in there, blow the whistle and pay the 50m. If they don't get back on the mark, pay the 50m penalty. The other team is essentially being penalised because the umpire is preventing a free kick from taking place.
The umpires need to STFU and influence the game with the whistle and nothing else, why have this ever-more complex narrative turning the game into a confusing shitshow?
