Appalling almost the worst I have seen for awhile..a Hawthorn game a few seasons ago was similar
An issue that I think is playing a big part in the utterly abysmal standard of umpiring we are currently experiencing is the fact that the umpires seem to have been given a directive to 'coach' the players in every single aspect of the game.

"Back a metre!", "East-west!", "Stay out of the area!" - it seriously never ends. Meanwhile, because they're so fixated on telling the players what to do at all times, they are distracted and missing blatant free kicks. Essentially they are focusing on the wrong things.

What possible justification is there for an umpire to tell a player to stay out of the protected area? If the player runs in there, blow the whistle and pay the 50m. If they don't get back on the mark, pay the 50m penalty. The other team is essentially being penalised because the umpire is preventing a free kick from taking place.

The umpires need to STFU and influence the game with the whistle and nothing else, why have this ever-more complex narrative turning the game into a confusing shitshow?

Did you see Fisher's look away handball in the middle during the last quarter straight to a Crows player? Pretty much game over when Crows kicked a goal from that one.
I did see that. But what I liked was that the senior players got straight around him, gave him a pat on the back and (I'm assuming) told him to forget about it and move on.

Definitely saw Murphy and Kruze there, and one or two others.

Complex rules add to the mix, ie prior opportunity it's so confusing, they have a split second to call it but none went our way yesterday

it's almost not worth tackling

And yes the constant narrative on field and when they start using their nick names is weird...wanna be's ?

...in a row too. Give credit where credit due please

I don't think anyone would have doubted that Liam possesses the raw attributes - tall, strong, athletic, aggressive. It's just that for years he (and the clubs he's played at) have been barking up the wrong tree, thinking he was made to be a key forward.
Now that he is finally in a role where he can realize his potential, I don't want to see some other club benefitting just because we were too chicken-sh!t to invest enough in him.
I'm not saying throw the farm at him, but if he's performing at elite level as a gorilla stopping key defender, we should pay him his due, or risk losing him.

Anyway, I have faith in SOS &co, they seem to be making the right calls contract-wise.

My gripe is how exactly are you meant to ascribe a motive on field?

No genuine attempt, no prior opportunity, deliberate OOB, blocking, most of the ruck infringements; all of them are, in some measure, an umpire trying to determine the intent of a player, at AFL level speeds. Just stupid, stupid rules, that are impossible to enforce without some mindreading involved; sometimes it's easier than others, but most of the time it's a fifty fifty that could go either way.

Get the mindreading shit out of the game and start policing genuine disposals more - don't give me that 'I got my fist to it' bullshit, if it's a throw it's a throw, and if you've not handballed or kicked it in a tackle and the opposition hasn't hit the ball with their fist, you've not disposed of it correctly - and we'll be better by far, both in terms of spectacle and of how easy the game will be to officiate.

Oh, and if a player complains to you about your decision, immediate fifty. You want to whinge, do it elsewhere.

C.Curnow tracking beautifully
Jones , well im astonished
A few players put themselves very close to red pen territory yesterday.
Sumner, really not sure what he's bringing to the table. Small and not overly skillful, but more importantly simply never gets enough disposals. I find it extraordinary that people are potting Kerridge, at least he can find the ball. We have way too many guys that get less than 7 or 8 disposals in an entire game, can't keep carrying so many of these non-contributors.

Terrific signs overall yesterday. Jones simply brilliant, Charlie hugely influential (22 disposals and 11 marks are SERIOUS numbers), Cripps, Gibbs and Kreuzer in full beast mode.

Silly mistakes cost us but so much to like.

Absolutely shattering. Some notes:

- Jones, Kreuzer, Gibbs and Docherty in AA form
- Charlie should get the rising star nomination this week; no idea how he hasn't kicked a bag of goals yet
- We may have finally gotten Daisy Thomas to Carlton; his belief in his body, smarts and skill is immense at the moment
- Sumner showed Pickett how to handle the high ball
- Kerridge had some game despite some of the fumbles, and that terrible out on the full; had seen him kick goals like in the SANFL, so good to see it translate
- We should have had Buckley in the team so Sheehan could play the spare role White got
- Our inability to craft a run inside 50 and shoot when its too congested in the 0-30 range is the biggest issue with our forward structure and ball movement into the forward half
Yep Daisy is a Blue now, let's get behind him.

Takes 6 weeks for things to become habitual.. If jones continues on current form the next few weeks I'm sure he'll be offered a contract. For now no rush as he's not a free agent as only played with us for 3 years and doubt he'd want to play fir Brisbane, so worst case we get a reasonable trade for him. But I think now Rowe will be offered a mature age rookie spot (or he will see the writing on the wall and retire) and jones promised to make the full back role his own. Jones after much hard work feels comfortable in his own skin, why risk moving to a new environment and team mates where now you've potentially finally made it and are working wel with your fellow defenders and have a set of coaches who have helped transform you.

In a high possession team its hard to understand how some blokes struggle to get double figures.
Cant have Sumner / Jack / Fisher all as "pressure act" forwards - they need to hit scoreboard.

Lamb's game v Suns was his best for Blues - he will come in for either Sumner or Fisher.

Kerridge / Graham - they are the ultimate 2 steps forward, 1 step back players - almost convince us they can play then turnover / decision making costs us.
At this stage of their careers surely decision making wont improve.

Worst turnover of game was Murphy sideways chip as we streamed forward - killed any chance.

Fish needs to stay ! Only a matter of time before he has a break out game imo .Sumnuts on the other hand needs to do more .

Yesterday at the game I watched the benches closely as I sit just above them.
In the 1st quarter the Adelaide runner was on the ground from the 9 minute mark until the 19 minute mark filling holes as we were trying to exit D50.
This went on most of the day and is becoming an issue each week although the gutless AFL will not act.
The runners should be banned

Disappointing that we didn't come away with the win, but obviously I'm stoked with how we're going. We're way ahead of where I expected us to be in our rebuild, pretty much every pick and trade by SOS has been a winner which no doubt has helped to fast track this.

Loving that we have been in most games we've played this year, and have been able to hit the front in some. In these games a combination of kids, tired legs and poor decision making have hurt us.

More players moved on, more game time and another pre season for the kids, as well as hopefully picking up one or 2 quality mids, and 2018 & beyond is looking very bright.

We are not as far off as some people would have you believe. Further improvement will come from increased fitness for the kids & self belief.

Don Pyke described it as a "finals-style" game. This with us playing a number of kids. Quite a compliment.
Agree, which is why I find it amusing that so many are keen to move on players now because they will not be part of our next premiership challenge. Who knows when our next premiership will be.

Great way of putting it..thought they did some good things, especially Kerridge, but both made some shocking decisions. Hard to see their decision making improving, would have changed by now if it was going to.

The problem i find with graham is he doesnt dispose of it fast enough he often wrecks the chain or spread of the team as he takes too long to figure out what the next move is.
I believe that is symptomatic of someone who is not playing by instinct but trying very hard to be measured and controlled.
Suggests someone who does not have confidence that they are going to get another game.

Agree completely. Which is why we must try to hang on to Casboult. He has his flaws but imagine our forward line without him. He need to strengthen it not make it worse.
I think SOS has a pretty good appreciation of cas' worth to carlton and also what his worth is to carlton is if he does get taken by someone else as a FA.

Id guess that there would be a contract on the table at the end of the year. If he wants it then he can have it, if he can get more at the likes of richmond or collingwood then see you later cas. We will have the compensation.

I dont see any point in a rebuilding side, why you would want to pay overs to retain a player that is a one trick pony - great mark, but lets face it thats about it for cas the rest of his game is usually pretty frustrating from a supporters point of view.

100% :thumbsu:

What's with all the running education given off by the umpires?
If the players don't get it, they should go and learn the rules, or ask their coach to help them out.
