Love the big guy Tomahawk, although with him foreseeably being out for a while could this be a blessing in disguise, forcing changes that likely wouldn’t have been made before?

His been playing a decoy role for ages in an attempt to bring other guys into the action and now he can’t be there to facilitate this.

Either they step up and learn on the run without him, or don’t.

I personally think it works better for the team.

Tomahawk as a decoy! You gotta laugh. Not at him but the notion that that's been his role.

Optimistic view:
Out: Hawk (inj) mullin tuohy oconnor
In: conway neale mannagh knevitt

What i will probably see
Neale for hawk and nothing else which will make me angry

Ohenry has to be in the gun as well. He's a downhill skier. I'd start Rohan ahead of him and use sub on mannagh or knevitt

Mannagh and knevitt have already been poorly used and should not play 1/4. Make one of last weeks underperformers the sub.

I think the changes for the Bombers fall in the following buckets - necessary and form

Necessary INs

  • Neale for Hawkins
  • Knevitt for Dangerfield
  • a ruckman (most likely Stanley over Conway simply because Goldy is an experienced and mature body ruck)

Form INs

- Hardie or Mannagh for, wait for it, CLOSE

I love Close but he needs to find his brilliant touch again in the VFL. He’s fumbly. Tuohy if he’s fit offers more than Close at the moment. He’s a big body and straight lines the ball. We need that in the side. Question is whether Tuohy can play consecutive games these days.

Without any disrespect to PFD or Stewy, the hole left by Selwood is Grand Canyon sized. Having said that, Stewart in particular has hardly left a glowing recommendation as next captain over the past seven weeks, which does make you wonder who our next skipper will be once Paddy retires.

Tanner Bruhn looks the type

They may trust some players for another week , but another poor loss to Ess ( i dont think it will be ) then the axe might really get swung

Chris Scott has shown for a long, long time he's not the axe swinging type. And he's been proven right many times. Posters here were screaming for Guthrie, Miers, Blicavs and Kolo to be dropped at various times and they all bounced back incredibly well after being backed by Scott.

If he trusts a player he'll back them to the hilt. But if he loses that trust it's a tough road (Parfitt and Bews the most obvious examples).

My guess is nobody established under 30 gets dropped. Maybe Mullin but he's not really established. O'Connor maybe since he was omitted previously. No way will he drop guys like Close, SDK, Atkins, etc. My guess is he might tell guys like Tuohy, Rohan and Stanley that their time is up.

I don’t think it’s funny at all, it’s smart. Jezza is the #1 forward and it’s apparent Tom has been instructed to bring it to ground or pass it off when he can.
Jezza is only a part time forward. Where did that decoy story come from? Hawkins might have looked like a decoy but he was our number one forward until this year when his form seriously declined. He had 3 disposals on Friday including 3 turnovers, no score involvements, in 80 mins game time before he injured his foot. He is about to turn 36 so his drop in form is understandable. Neale will get a chance now but I wouldn't be expecting too much from him. He's young and needs time.

I doubt that will happen this week (Stanley excepted)…

Rohan will get to his 200 and might play most games I think - even if as sub.

2E seems to still be a favourite

I've been quietly optimistic because even though our AFL team has been looking as dodgy as hell, our VFL team has been going well. However I watched the VFL game on the weekend and they looked flakey as well. Based on that display, few if any look like future AFL players. However, I don't think promoting them will hurt our chances in the AFL as some of our AFL players don't look AFL standard either. Any of Hardie, Mannagh, Humphries, Jeka might be worth a try. They all look solid enough for AFL. Clohesy is a bit light, O'Sullivan doesn't look ready, nor does Stevens.

I think Stewart has been very disappointing as a leader and stand-in captain. The defence has become one of the worst in the league over the past 8 or so weeks, after a stellar start. He should be the main organiser. Last year he was great but we had stacks of injuries at inopportune times and an awful pre-season following the flag. So I see 2023 and 2024 as separate issues.

Cameron has failed to carry the side outside of a purple patch for each of the past two seasons. When he is "on" and has his mojo, it seems to spark the whole team. So I'd file him in the disappointing camp too, given he is still in his prime and his best is "best in the league".

Our other leaders have all been struggling to maintain form and so are not that solid core either. So many veterans are just keeping their heads above water.

Of course losing Selwood has hurt and I have no doubt our poor close game record since he retired is not random. But I don't think Dangerfield is a rotten leader. It simply hurt to lose the stalwart, as it would for any club in that situation.
Danger is an excellent leader, and was Joel’s right hand man for years. He’s just not out there enough and it hurts the team. He also would’ve been a better captain in his prime years. Would be frustrating for him to not be out there and for his body to be letting him down. If he played the Melb, Port and Giants games, I reckon we win.

Joel Selwood was just another level of leader to almost anyone who’s ever played the game, something intangible. But even with him as captain we had a bad year in 2015 and it only turned the next year because Danger arrived.

Clark made poor decisions by foot but his kicking technique is good. He's kicking it like Bruhn last year who looked like a dear in headlights and the game was flying past him too quick to make smart decisions.

Bruhn after another 15 games has found his place and his kicking has been excellent this year. Get another 10-15 games into Clark and he's likely to do the same

I think that Clark is just hurrying it all the time, probably partially because of his smaller frame can't bust tackles yet.

Says a bit about how Parfitt is rated when he can't crack a team crying out for a midfielder

Especially when he's averaging the most stoppage clearances for the team this year, from basically half the amount of games played. It was noticeable on Friday how badly we were getting torched from stoppages, yet it appears he's had his papers stamped.

Regardless of what your thoughts are on him, one of our biggest problems is clearance work, yet we are leaving one of our best statistically out of the side.

Scott did say they were "thinking of things" meaning change/elevations. You never know your luck in the big city.

Moving the current chess pieces is probably more like it, buy Conway is a must. Neale a probable, but if he's been sent back to work on his game, he hardly set the world on fire. Although I did see him getting to the front/lead and that was my beef.
They''ll consider what the Bombres have got of course. We need a runner, and we both know who that should be. It's quiet in that camp so far.

With Guthrie and Bruhn, Danger, and possibly Hawk, to be integrated back in time, any VFL who gets promoted needs to grab their chance with both hands.

When asked to improve my output at work I might respond that I'm "thinking of things"

Interesting addition:
"Geelong’s 2024 Regional Guernsey includes the colours of every Cats AFL player’s junior or local club – whether Australian Rules or Gaelic Football – in a stripe around the middle Hoop, with each player’s guernsey also individualised to feature their junior club logo.

In total, 37 clubs are represented on the guernseys, including AFL Barwon clubs Anglesea, Barwon Heads, Grovedale, Leopold, Newtown and Chilwell, Queenscliff, South Barwon, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s."
