Said it before, I'll say it again. Stop trying to trade McKay FFS.

We would regret that like a tonne of bricks falling on our heads, I'd wager.

The other inexperienced players (other than Sam Walsh) who looked good at ground level were O’Brien (highlight was his goal in the third quarter), Deluca (good in close on many occasions today) and Setterfield (who was up for the contest).

Others like Jack Silvagni, Dow, Samo, Kennedy, McKay, Fisher and Cuningham struggled to make an impact.

We got a touch up by a very good side, it happens.
I remember getting told years ago that “you’re not a good player until you’re a good player” that’s our problem. Half our side are still not good players yet and that can pretty much all be put down to youth. We can stomp our feet all we want but they are still too young and not good enough yet to compete with the true contenders.
A huge preseason coming up and can not wait until next season, I haven’t been this excited since Judd arrived.

I thought we were wasteful and ineffective with the ball despite having the better of the Cats for significant parts of the game. It was the same old story of working hard but not putting the score on the board when we had our chances. Geelong, for the most part, took its chances even though the conditions were not conducive for quick snaps and marks in the forward half.

It was disappointing that we went home in the last quarter. The 3/4 time score of 14.6 to 6.13 (I’m still not sure why it wasn’t 7.12. Maybe someone can confirm it was touched by a Geelong player.) was a truer indication of the contest. The last quarter was disappointing but not reflective of our effort for three quarters. So as a reference point I would be looking at the stats to 3/4 time.

Losing Ed during the third quarter was a huge loss. At that stage he, Murph, Cripps and Kreuzer had been huge and their efforts had certainly carried a number of our younger players. That’s not a serious criticism of some of our young players just a reflection of their development and lack of experience.

Surely Weitering deserves a place in the All-Australian squad after his efforts this season. The weather helped but he kept Hawkins in his back pocket for the entire game.

Sam Walsh is a young marvel. His work rate is unbelievable for a first year player. On so many occasions this year the second half of his game is demonstrably better than his first half and today was no exception. He’ll be the Rising Star and should get a place in the AFLs U22 team.

I’m going to miss Daisy. I’ve been a strong supporter of his over the six seasons and he certainly is capable of continuing his career. It was a fitting send off today and thoroughly deserved.
Geelong are just simply are more complete team than us. the big difference is ratagolea and hawkins aren't there for the goals, they're there to provide a target to bring the ball to ground for the ground level players. That's what they were doing in the first half of the year when they were wiping the floor with west coast, richmond etc. It was really nice of them to put that on hold for the whole second half of the year and bring it back just for us.

By contrast we actually require mcgovern, mckay, kennedy and silvagni to take marks and kick the goals because we don't have any good ground level options. That's why the wet weather kills us so badly. (I feel like we've endured more wet weather games this year than any other side as well)

Yep agreed. Man do we have some very soft footballers on our list. Some who just refuse to put their bodies on the line. When you go to Geelong on a windy, rainy day, you have to be prepared to go hard. Many of our players didn't.
Yep was just too hard for the boys today .

I seriously can’t believe I’m reading people want to trade mckay 😂

Thank god they arent in charge of list management. They would probably try and re recruit Richard tabling with Adelaide’s pick
The 'we've got lots of talented forward options so we should just trade one for currency' mentality is the reason melbourne went from a prelim to 17th.

Mckay isn't going anywhere.

He does however need to take 100 set shots at training every day over the next 6 months. He's got a nice neating kicking motion but he needs to kick through the ball when kicking for goals rather than just stab at it.

Skills and brains were a problem. Not effort and attitude.
1st and last quarters were atrocious the effort level was not there imo .
Of which when the effort level is down is when the brain farts and skill errors creep in .
Carlton stinking up rd 23 is an annual event that comes down to conditional effort .

You really had to be there to believe how poor the conditions were. The wind totally changed direction in the quarter time break and continued to favour Geelong in the second quarter. The rain came down and it was not a great day to play footy (or watch footy).

We thought about leaving early, but when I was told off for clapping too loudly in a Geelong woman's ear, we decided to stay and clap (when appropriate) until the end of the game.

It was great to see Daisy chaired off. My daughter has declared she is never going to the cattery ever again so I hope the AFL decides we don't have to go there in 2020.

What a toss to lose. The 3-4 goal wind in the first quarter set the tone. Rain was torrential after quarter time
No injuries. Let’s look forward

Really sick of hearing it tbh, to me it's just so stupid it doesn't even warrant a hypothetical discussion.

Should be a bannable offence even suggesting it.

We were on hiding to nothing in this game, disappointing result but still has taken nothing away from our performance generally during the second half of the season. Looking forward to seeing further improvement from the group in 2020.

On a positive note, wanted to highlight plowmans game....really rate his second half of the year in particular, and was really good again against the cats...

Happy to try to pick off the high risk options (and now hits them more often than not) and always asked to play either oversized on small, nimble forwards or undersized on KPP...today being no exception after being asked to play a KP after Cas was swung forward...

Really underrated I reckon for what he brings....

Still don't think some of our young talent is as good as people rave on about and like to believe.
I guess time will tell, next year will give us a clearer insight to what some of these kids are capable of.
Some of these kids are a couple of preseasons and more games experience off being ready to compete at the required levels consistently, patience is needed.

No thanks to Ross. Not going to judge anyone in any way on this game. Get into the preseason, get the bodies right, bring in the right players and we continue down the right track. All journeys are littered with set backs to learn from. Today was always going to be tough and the wind swung after quarter time!
Yes maybe no to Ross but you always need a few new faces in your coaching ranks for some fresh ideas —

No doubt. Not Ross though. The game has passed him and his negating style.
