Autopsy Rd 7 Blues lose after the siren in a thriller

Interesting point that I don't think has been raised...

If the game was reversed and a Carlton player had a kick from the same spot as Robbie Gray to win the match, who would you like it in the hands of? Tough question for mine, and don't know whether I would've trusted any of our boys as much as Port probably did with Gray....

Gov for mine, has the technique and composure.

Fairly easy answer imo, Mitch McGovern.

Yeh he has been pretty consistent on the set shot...

Would throw a left field one and say maybe even Matt Kennedy...proved to be a pretty reliable set shot in the second half of last year...

The other one I was thinking was Betts, but has always been better on the run than a set shot, and the distance may have troubled him...

I thought the distance was going to trouble Gray, he's at a max of about 45m these days but the bugger had to go and find a yard or 2 when he really needed to!

I thought he was going to kick it as well.

I don't think I actually believed it. He's not a long kick but that was only 35m or so. I was trying to give myself hope!

Same.
I had to walk out of the room. Couldn’t watch. I had flashbacks of Burgoyne.
Hell of a kick. No matter what happened in the lead up to it, to nail that kick in that situation was pure clutch.

Someone with plenty of tricks and also has no 19 on their back.

I agree McGov would be the best candidate from that distance, but wouldn't it be a hoot if Big Cas put it through...

Just watched the Jack Martin intensity for the kicker going inside 50 to Robbie Gray (on the couch). That’s pretty bad. He has done stuff to work on. He’s supposed to be a tackling machine. I was sitting on the couch and moving faster to the fridge for a beer. He didn’t have a great game and that was weak as piss.

As far more learned observers than I have noted on here, we do appear to be attempting to corral the player with the ball rather than charging at him to tackle. It has to be a team directive as I just don’t see players doing that on instinct. Even if it is a team strategy, surely stopping the ball and forcing a stoppage at the stage of the game is preferable.

maybe my tv is too small or my vision is going, but i cannot recall a blatant freekick that mckay gave away. Most, if not all, are bearly there if at all.
I agree, not blatant but he seems to give plenty away.
Are you saying the umps have it in for him?

So is holding the ball.
It’s funny you know.
Tonight on 3AW Leigh Matthews said the number one issue with the rules were players falling/lying/sitting/jumping/ doing handstands on players backs, preventing them from getting the ball out.
Pay the in the back, which it is, and hey presto, stoppages are reduced significantly
But what would he know......???😎

Gov or Cunners for me

Not sure I would assign any bias to the umpiring of H's contested work , but comparing what Dixon did to Jones without being pinged, surely H must have been committing acts which were borderline GBH to have been whistled.

Nope, umpires do not influence games...no way, no siree...

Important note that I didn't see mentioned anywhere.
EVERY "expert" tipster in the land tipped against Carlton.
And yet we were seconds away from winning it- tells you something right there

We were stiff. Not so much the last 5 minutes, but we should have been further up at that stage.
Unlucky bounce of the ball, and some very dodgy umpiring decisions. Still, we should have been able to ice it at the end.

Arr0w
Newnes glaring mistakes
2nd quarter
9:01 to go, taps the ball straight to Marshall, kicks to Butters for a goal.
6:00 15 meter chip kick to Samo at defensive 50, puts him under huge pressure, almost turnover except Samo is able to recover
4th
7:32 poor effort at tackling Dixon, slows down, let's Dixon go inside, results in set shot.
2:56 falls over allowing Port to clear

He had an ok game, but we should be looking for better
