Autopsy Rd 7 Carlton v GWS Post Match Discussion/Rant/Whatever

The saddest part of the night was seeing Watson's face on the bench after he was subbed off.

He was absolutely devastated, you could see it.

His dream of an AFL career going in front of his eyes.

Felt so sorry for him.

He had so few opportunities. In reality he had two chances in the game to impose himself and did not take either. That is such a small margin for error, but this is what AFL careers hang on sometimes.

Personally I hope he gets another chance.
The disappointing thing for me was that early on Watto kept on offering leads however his teammates were not honouring them. At one stage he had a 10 metre break on his opponent, yet his teammate held the play up instead of honouring the lead. It reminded me of playing in the high school footy team when certain players would only kick the ball to their mates.

Apparently he's not in the 'wolf pack'.

Pretty sure they had drinks at theirs tonight and had a right ol' laugh about the game.

Wtf happened over summer?
Did we do anything?

This sort of rubbish is disgraceful. Kernahan deserves better.

Maybe...but I'd argue the fans do too.

Its our administration over the past decade that led us here. Not a coach, not a player but our management. We've been run into the ground by dinosaurs while other clubs embraced the modern world. The corpse lays at Sticks' feet as much as anyone else on that front.

I attended the match today and hoped for the best. I sat out the first quarter by myself and, at the break, my son joined me. By this stage it was clear a miracle would be required to make the match competitive. I thought the effort to control the ball was there in the first half. The fact that we were 5 goals down was alarming. 5 scoring shots against 18 for the opposition made me wonder why the third and fourth line of players are happy to watch the defenders short kick around the back half. Players up the field were totally pedestrian.

The start to the third quarter was scary. Ball up, hit to advantage, GWS midfielder, with ball, running away from the contest, Carlton player trailing. Three goals in the blink of an eye. What are we? 51 points behind and totally out of the contest. The third quarter thrashing was bad. 8 goals to 4.

The last quarter was a blur. I could see what was happening but I was emotionally numb by this stage (or was it just the temperature inside Docklands).

The siren went and I marched out to the thumping beat of the GWS team song.

The walk back to the car is a time for reflection. Judd looks sore. He must be because he doesn't tackle like before. Jaksch is a kid and we can't expect too much. Curnow gives us so much but his flaws stop him from being a real star for the team. Devon must be spewing he copped Ed today. Are we fit? We look spent before the opposition. Cas could become a forward we can rely on to kick 2 or 3 a week. Whatever Sav has done is working. All we need to do is create more space for him in the forward 50. Dick was involved in some positive moves in the back half. As for the future for Dick. See Jaksch. Others like Murphy, Yarran, Bell and Docherty had a crack.

I read most of this thread. I'm not going to vent. This list is underachieving and it hurts to watch. No doubt more changes will be made for the Geelong game. Hopefully Kreuzer is ready to play along with Jamison, Henderson, Simpson and Cripps. What we need is an injection of enthusiasm because there's nobody out there who looks like they're enjoying the game at the present time.

Now that is the right question the club needs to asking itself over the next 6 months ... if not earlier !!!

Which ever the way the club goes, the supporters have to be realistically expecting a hell of lot more games like today, before we are competitive again. But as someone rightly pointed out, the seeds for this season piss poor showing haven't just been sowed recently. Its been in the making for nearly 8 or 9 years now.

Sorry to go over old ground but below is a stark reminder that you need more than just three No. 1 draft picks to lay the foundation of long term success and why it is so critically important for Son of Serge to get the next 3 or 4 drafts right and create a squad that has a depth of talent and not just a handful of talented players.

This recruiting is just absolutely deplorable .... we need to brow serious money at a good recruiter and developers!

In all seriousness... I'd say we'd be within 20-30 points of the teams listed in div 3.

Probably 60-80 from the teams in div 2... and I'd rather not think of how we'll go against the div 1s...

Based on what we have seen thus far this season, we are Div 4, I cannot see who we are capable of beating apart from Gold Coast right now.

Well... no...

We beat St Kilda... we were within 30 points of both Richmond and Brisbane... and depending on what day we get Melbourne we'll probably be within 30 points of them too.

I'm not saying we aren't the worst team in the league... I'm saying there are a few others slightly less shit but still shit.

Interesting to give it ago...

Div 1...
Fremantle
Sydney
Hawthorn
Port

Div 2...
West Coast
Adelaide
GWS
North
Collingwood
Bulldogs
Essendon
Geelong

Div 3...
Richmond
Gold Coast
Brisbane
Carlton
St Kilda
Melbourne
Dont worry... the AFL will throw a bunch more picks at the Gold Coast and get them up into the second division again... and penalise the Dogs for pinching Boyd from their other pet team... GWS...

It is very fortunate for Cats supporters that Frank Costa didn't blink when the noise supporters were making early in the 2007 season made some of the board jittery at the time.
Big difference. Cats had a a good, young list that underperformed in 2006.

We are such dogshit atm it's hard too tell what the **** we are or will be in a few years.

In other words....

Academy picks to GC and GWS stay the same.

Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond aren't allowed father sons or first rounders.

But as pointed out there is a chunk of that list still there, that were performing well back then, and aren't now. Why? Why aren't the ones still there performing? Why aren't the listening and learning this game plan? Put away the draft lists, they were there when we were playing finals, are still there, and after 3 years are still not listening.

The rest is deflection IMO.

Could it be a combination of they have little support as stated of any real talent and are struggling with the burden or carrying the heavy load and some are getting on a bit possibly possibly?

I considered it but late 20s is not an age where you should be fading. Then you go ... well, why can Cripps perform at a decent level ... or Docherty ... why is Bell improving?
