It is totally unbelievable a non-football person like Fagan could have made that call. There has to be other contributing factors. Our coach on principal should have walked if he had no input into the pick. Gibbs was a good player at the time but not a champ and long in the tooth football wise.

Fraudan almost certainly just passing on board directive. Big issue with Gibbs was that his heart remained with the Blues, he only ever came for the pay cheque. So as soon as it got a bit hard, he gave nothing.

I remember Galluci having a real break out game against Carlton back in the day and after that we completely ruined him. A real shame on many counts.
He kicked 4 goals iirc but that was the bad Carlton playing at the end of the season. I think it's more a case of coming up against particularly weak opponent. Kind of like how the Crows will often make some no name spud on the opposing side look like star.

Sure, but at least Nicks and Burns have some background in professional coaching. The rest are anyone who's willing to live in SA and drive to West Lakes twice a week.
Even with Burns, from the sounds of it we had to offer a very big deal to move down. When he was first announced he made the point that it was a long-term move for him and he didn't want to come down for just 2-3 years and then move again. He's from SA, but spent more of his life in Melbourne by that point, so certainly didn't consider himself and "Adeladian" or anything.

Supposedly we had a crack at Rutten and Dew, who both turned us down because we wouldn't promote them to senior assistant. So it's the same problem really, we've had chances to get more people in, but they all want a promotion to 2IC.

Port seem to have run into a similar issue lately, Chad Cornes as a forward coach, Carr as their midfield coach, Goldsack as defensive coach, Hartlett as their SANFL coach, Lobbe as their ruck coach.

I do think it's an SA issue, not just a Crows issue.

Sounds like we need to invent a few more sexy sounding titles ...

They'd be howled down for it, but they should be putting someone like Laird on the table at the end of the year. It'd probably be like Tom Mitchell where you get a 2nd rounder for him, but there needs to be a further cull of the list of players who either won't make it (your McHenry types) or those who won't be in our next tilt.

Fog as well.

Would he even go?

Said it before, will say it again, Hamish Ogilvie is the reason we are where we are right now.

You can't go 15 plus years without drafting an elite mid and be any good in this league....

That one doesn't bother me as much as it does other people.

When you're near a flag, then go for it.

Plus the second first rounder is arguably a swap for their second, which was only a downgrade of a few spots.

I mean - it didn't work. But the Gallucci and McAsey picks are worse, because pretty much everyone got a good player and improved instead of us.
it was a bother he didn't do it a year earlier!

F/S BUT STILL A BIG HIT

11 picks and not a lot of hits...
We're always biased towards recent drafts. Give it a few years and there will be a few more misses in latter years given how we develop players.

Sorry about the rant, but can someone explain to me why Reid gets all the heat in the media but not Ogilvie? Isn’t he picking the players?? Reid has traded in Rankine and Dawson who are probably our only A-grade players. Ogilvie gets credit for Soligo and nobody else at present. He has screwed us completely. While we’ve been at the pointy end of the draft, Port have managed to get Rozee, Butters and JHF. The best midfield in the comp for probably 10 more years. And we’ve done basically nothing. It a joke. Ogilvie has to go.

I would have thought missing on jhf and the decision to keep the picks the same in 2018 was Reid's call, the club always did that kept the picks the same and minimally trade because of the belief that 97 and 98 were right time right place rather than building towards a crescendo

That’s true. But at least Reid got some things right. From 2016-2019 Hamish drafted 27 players. 13 are still on our list and literally none of them are any good.
