AFL Autopsy RND 20: Loss to the Swans

Season over. Time to be ruthless with list management and start putting a line through experienced players who have been given repeated opportunities and shown that their ceiling is not good enough. The talent coming through underneath cannot be ignored any longer. List positions are tight and we still need more quality coming through draft and trade

Loved Bryan’s game, Flip was good too.

Merrett, Langford, Heppell, Caldwell all great performances.

Zerk, McGrath, Redman, Kelly, Hind (to a lesser extent) all got torched, McGrath in particular is just plodding and I wouldn’t have an issue with Scott making a statement and sending him back to the VFL.

Blows my mind how much space we gave Lloyd and Blakey off HB, our small forwards barring Menzie showed very little defensive intent

Why was Menzie called to play on as he was running backwards in the centre square at the end?

Why was Zerk penalised in the goalsquare costing us a goal when he wasn’t even tackled?

Why was Phillips done for insufficient attempt when he’s simply trying to clear the ball to a teammate.

Why?

Because Sydney.

Kelly, Snelling, Laverde, Zerk, Guelfi are unlikely to be best 22 in a winning season.
Heppell and Phillips the same, but important leadership and depth for now.
Do we have the players to replace them, and if not, how do we get them?
Parish for Tsatas is a straight swap if he leaves and takes his brilliant disposal with him.
That is at minimum 7 or 8 changes needed in the next two years. Without unexpected player movement.

I thought we played quite well tonight. Merrett, Langford, Wright, Caldwell, Hobbs and Perkins all looked good tonight.

Who would have thought playing Cox is his natural position would be a plus? Looked good in spades tonight up back, while Nick Bryan killed it. We must re-sign him.

The obvious weaknesses of our team are plain in view to see now. Our backline isn’t very good and the lack of talent and quality in our smalls up forward is killing us.

Why wasn’t it 50 to Zerk when he took the mark and swans player played on over the mark and tackled him when he hadn’t gone off his line

Agree with everything except for Parish, he was a key reason we got so close.

He had some clangers kicks inside 50 but so everyone did.
