Phillipou large and powerful . Tsatas smaller and faster. Both where considered players who could break out of the contest despite their different skill sets.
The fact is Scott did not make the pick. It came down to two blokes. They went with Tsatas. Trying to say that Scott had any major input on what happened at the end of 2022 is not accurate. He was appointed at the end of September. On top of that he was head hunted so he was not preparing any sort of presentation on the playing list or had done any research. I can not find the article but there was one where he flat out said he would be having little impact of the list decisions that year.
And Tsatas is not actually a bust despite the concerns.

He preferenced Tsatas because of the outside run, because of where rule changes were taking the game.

It's clown world recruiting to see the 2 players as the same style of player. It's like saying Rozee and Bont are similar.

Footy show going with ‘when will they ever get a big bodied mid’ with a supercut of us getting absolutely murdered on the spread by smaller, quicker players. We’re now too big and slow!

Too small and too slow more like it. You don't get beaten like that on the spread when you win the ball at the coalface.

Surprised Essendon didn’t draft the Pou. Typical pick that could be anything or nothing. Big bodied mid, medium forward, bursting cross between both… or bust because his role isn’t clear (after the compulsory trial in the back line).

Surely we have / had enough of these?
Been a Jacket’s thirst trap.

Langford - was originally spoken about as developing into a big bodied mid in spurts.

Francis - see Langford.

Stringer - real deal in that role.

Perkins - hopefully a smaller future version of Stringer.

Caddy (subsequent draft) apparently could go mid field. Personally think it’ll only be a break glass option.

Mids with grunt put forward include Hobbs and Caldwell.

Mid with burst line breaking - Shiel.

How do we fit Pou in?
I think as an EFC rarity drafted fit / need not best player available.

We actually won the stoppage clearances +4.

However, the quality of our clearances are poor because our structures around stoppages are poor & have been for a while now.
I'd argue that most of those clearances were rushed because they couldn't absorb physical pressure from bigger Port mids. No one to block and allow a clean clearance.

True.
Can’t set up to win by going defensive with the block 100% of the time.
But surely the team trains for a run on. Block it. Lock it. Absorb. Reset in 5.
Team leaders need to do this.
Coach needs to teach this.
Runners need to convey this instead of breaking up fights.

You have your opinion. You live in Bruno land and I live in clown land then.
In the real world Scott did not say give me Tsatas.

This is from the Saints website.

The excitement attached to Mattaes Phillipou is close to off the charts, as is the potential for the South Australian with unrivalled confidence and hunger to succeed.

A powerful and athletic midfielder/forward who has the right attributes to become a prominent impact player, Phillipou starred in his debut season to play every game (becoming the first Saint to do so since Callum Wilkie in 2019) and snare Rising Star honours.

Although not considered a part of his game prior to being drafted, the South Australian’s aerial ability and high-flying heroics are quickly becoming just as much of a part of his skillset as his flair in front of goal.

Phillipou is the son of former Western Bulldogs player Sam Phillipou, who played three games for the club in 1995.

16 possessions, 1 tackle with four turnovers? Doesn't seem that great?
Yep we didn't rate Massimo more than a one year deal because he was a half back with a good kick and nice pace but struggled to be a defender. In 2017 or 2018 he would have been the sort of player we threw 3 years on the table to keep but now we seem to be more aware of the sort of list we're trying to build and make those decisions accordingly.

At the moment we have Redman, Duursma, Martin, McGrath and Kelly/Durham rotating through those positions that he has been playing at the Hawks. Who does he push out? Comfortably behind all of those guys IMO.

That's the pressure of the industry.
I can appreciate that, I think. I know we don't want to play kids for the sake of it, and we need to play experienced blokes with them to give them the best chance to succeed, but we can set both the AFL and VFL up better by taking some experience out of the seniors to make the VFL more competitive.

Now these moves likely mean more losses at AFL level, but it means a more competitive VFL program

If Heppell, Kelly, Laverde, Goldstein and Hind played VFL and Roberts, Tsatas, Hayes, Bryan and Davey played AFL the biggest winners here are Roberts, Tsatas, Reid/Hayes, Bryan, Davey for getting AFL exposure and Lual, JDavey, Vigo, Reid/Hayes, Caddy and Tex for playing in a more competitive VFL program.

I think long term, that suits us better.

I totally agree with you my man. We are at the stage now.

Re the bolded: isn't that tanking?

Absolutely not, tanking is not trying to win, we would be trying to win, with different players.
Yeah, nah. Remember Dean Bailey. Playing the kids. The conversation at the time, which would be the same today, is that the job of the head coach is to field the best team each week. Would expect that it's a contractual obligation for both club and coach. Also arguably a breach of faith which is bad for morale if you make moves that "likely mean more losses at AFL level, but it means a more competitive VFL program."

We have a VFL coach and program and its not Scott.

So Bryan is not allowed to play in front of Goldstein unless he's performing at a higher level? And which club official is going to say "likely mean more losses at AFL level, but it means a more competitive VFL program."

I said that on an internet forum.

We don't need to communicate anything, we just need to do it.
