The midfield is the real 'spine' in a game it is the metaphorical backbone through which the back six are linked to the front six. if the midfield isnt working everything is disconnected and movement looks and operates in jagged dysfunctional fashion - no game plan can hold up to 4 quarters of dysfunctionality as compensatory actions accumulate and compound.

For a young team - this means they tire even faster and their confidence gets smashed as the predictable and therefre coachable aspects of the game plan are missing as fasr as what and where and when players shoudl be doing and why.

What everything then gets reduced to is singular examples of action or inaction - and then the fingers start getting pointed.

The rebuild is firstly about getting competency in place - and usually it starts with getting the type of player required to play who is taller and bigger and getting game time into them - this means you see back lines recruited and forwards. This has been done.

However - midfield construction has just begun. Here, the copmbination of speed/skill/size is crucial as these are the blokes who do the hard each way running and cop the most body wear and hits and are taxed athletically the most. Carlton ahs some outstanding midfielders in Murph/Cripps and Gibbs - and a bunch of kids who right now cant play 4 quarters high intensity football - even saying that - we dont have enough of the right type of midfielders- another Cripps sized to play alongside him at his level would totally change the team's capability for example.

This is why commenting on expected dysfunctionality given the portfolio of players we have is interesting but ultimately repetitious.

Until the midfielders stop turning the ball over going forwards - forward line functionality is compromised - because they cant really plan for proper entries. Same goes for backs - if they are constantly expecting to get turnovers coming back at them - they cant operate in optimal combination - because they cant predict entry points if the midfield arent pressuring entries.

Blaming Weitering for a poor game because of this or that failure to beat two opponents or pointing fingers at Rowe who week in week out has tpo manage t5he most difficult defensive role is just stoopid for reasons above.

Improvement will come when the midfield can start winning at least 55% of center bounces and clearances and also learn how to control tempo by keeping ball in hand. Until skill levels and aeobic on field capicity increases- the side will continue to evidence mixed intra quarter results - and better developed sides will capitalise on these lackings.

That is what a rebuild is - some teams get faster results because of state of list and others get slower results. Bolton will get faster results - but that doesnt mean teams wont deliver floggings to Carlton as the journey progresses.

end didactic rant.

Syndey should beat Carlton by 6+ goals - anything less should be considered a win by Carlton.

The MC wanted to play them.

I was surprised that we were rolling them out so quickly, expecting more of a gap between the introduction of debutantes, but we took the chance.
Malthouse on radio yesterday felt it may not be the right way to go, but I'm not too worried any more.

I get the impression these guys can wear a beating without getting too down or flustered about it.
There will be change this week though, but at least the changes will be warranted for form.

I'm with you there every debutant that came in deserved to keep their spot until that game which is very promising. The MC sent a clear message to the playing group and to the supporter base about our direction and thats very pleasing. However we continue to have negative people that no matter what happens they just cannot be satisfied.

Might be Rolling Stone fans

No drastic changes. Stick with em. Kreuzer in for Phillips is a given. Maybe give Harrison a rest, play Weitering on Buddy and Rowe on Tippett. Bring in McKay, let's see what the young guy can do. Hopefully can take a few grabs and snag a couple.
