Ross Lyon sacked.

I think GWS sounds like a good fit for him. I know they have ill timed runs with injuries each year but very recently they've had some really spiritless performances.

Lyon is a good coach, I think, in certain circumstances.

I've been posting about this since his St Kilda days on here. His game style / plan, had a limited, peak lifespan, if you don't get the prize in that limited time frame then you're stuffed. It's too mentally and physically taxing on the players and just breaks them.

With Nic Riewoldt and Matthew Pavlich now prominent in the media, I'd really like to hear them speak about this or for someone to ask them.

GWS agree - First club I thought of when I heard Ross had been sacked.

Our most successful coach ever was an ex-Tiger
We don't care where they come from. We do have short patience with coaches and players though.

But things were different then.

I bet some wouldn't have accepted Kevin Sheedy at first either. But there wasn't the internet or Twitter in the 80's, and there wasn't a footy media who smell blood and undermine coaches.

By the time these things had come along, Sheedy had won three flags.

If Sheedy had coached Essendon today, and hadn't coached them back then, people like Lloyd and Watson, who in this alternate universe wouldn't have been coached by Sheedy, would have undermined him.

Things were different back in the 80's. Also, some Essendon fans did turn on Sheedy, and tired of him. So you can't compare that to the incestuous Essendon mentality of today.

When Essendon fans, sponsors, coeterie groups, Lloyd, Watson etc get behind ONE coach who actually came from outside the club, and give him a chance from the start, then come and talk to me.

Neesha. Was a good coach. Just inherited WAFL standard team with s**t all concessions to enter a national league. Every Other new club got twice the help Freo did.
In some ways was ahead of his time with respect to ball movement from the back half.

We're right to do so. Knights was a horrific gameday coach and average as hell across.everything he touchd. Place went from stagnent and needing new life to a rabble.

You never gave him a chance.

People were pissed off that he got the job over Hardwick, who actually played for Essendon.

Knights' biggest sin was that the sash he wore was yellow, not red.

I have no doubt that him being an ex-Bomber was a big reason they got him across. However, if those in the know are to be believed he’s also alarmingly competent at coaching.

Time will tell, but it’s likely they’ve made a good decision regardless of their intrinsic motivations.
Took Rutten on as well, on the same basis.
As well as Goodwin, McCartney, Egan, etc over the years.

Classic BF that a thread about Freo's coach being sacked turns into Essendon being criticised :S

Not sure Worsfold would go to Freo. Or that we wouldn't give him the last year of his contract given he got us to finals with a terrible run of injury.

Can someone please check on Mark Harvey and make sure the schadenfreude hasn't killed him.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer piece of s**t, icing on the cake would be if Freo have already contracted a new coach through his management behind his back. Hope he didn't poorly invest his money this time ;)
Saw a tweet that Bell has a coach lined up as well as assistants
So this could be the case.

Matthew Knights, never played for Essendon, undermined from day 1 by ex-Essendon players (lloyd, Watson) and coetrie groups and sponsors.

Sponsors even threatened to pull out if Knights continued as coach (so now sponsors decide hiring and firing. Step off).

James Hird- causes the most devastating scandal in AFL history, yet fans and sponsors stick by him, despite Knights or Worsfold not ruining the club as much as Hird did.

If a non-"favourite son" had done that, he would have been sacked immediately, not deified like James Hird.

John Worsfold, who also never played for Essendon, and had to clean up the s**t Hird had left the club in, was undermined from day one.

Interesting that Matthew Lloyd has actively petitioned to get both Knights and Worsfold sacked, but said nothing about what his mate, James Hird did.

Did you fail to see that your credibility died a number of posts ago?

Losing to Essendon is so pathetic you lose your job over it.

3 times this year
Bolton,
Lyon,
Scott

Only missed Richardson and we would have had the full 2019 set.

This year ain't over yet!

Oh shit, you're playing us this week

Has there ever been a season with so many coaches leaving?

In 1981, 5 out of 12 clubs started the season with new coaches. One of those new coaches was Malcolm Blight at North, and he was replaced by Barry Cable mid season (Blight was the last playing coach in the then VFL).

Essendon were also becoming borderline irrelevant until Sheedy rocked up too - they weren't the self-entitled bunch of mongoloids they became in the post Sheedy era - and as such he wouldn't have faced the same pressure.

Finishing 3rd last with the most points scored against probably had something to do with it
Also a certain dual premiership coach being available.

I never gave him a chance? I wish he coached Essendon for 10 years. He was shithouse at his job. Was guttered when Essendon realised

I’m not criticising Essendon though. It’s pretty much the best of both worlds. The fact Caracella played for the Dons and was good, appeals to the nuffies. The fact he has also experienced other environments and has been described as integral to their success makes him a good appointment.

Makes things interesting
Ratten v Lyon for the Saints

It'd be insane to bring Lyon back to Saints.

New coaches bring their supporter base universal hope and goodwill: Lyon @ Saints? Nup

New coaches need time and patience from the supporter base to do what they need to do: Lyon @ Saints? Nup
