Very average today BUT.....
Positives ......4 points
Acres game gone up a notch .
Billings is gonna explode .
Gresham continues to bob up when we need it
Hunter Clark is gonna be a star
Ben Long showed massive potential
Robbo showing leadership in defence
Ross continues to evolve into Elite midfielder

Good win in the end, great to see us respond after Brisbane got on top halfway through the 3rd quarter.

Acres, Steven, Roberton and Billings were all terrific.

Geary, Ross, Membrey and Webster were all very good too.

A few question marks though, don't think Longer, Long and Paddy did enough, they did some good things but we need more out of them over 4 quarters.

I'm prepared to give them another game against North to prove their worth though.

Thought Long was fantastic personally. Agree about everything else

Hunter already a better handball than 95% of players at the club. Those Sam Mitchell type handballs! The amount of poor execution of handball at this club wowee! Acres amazing set shot player, I can't remember last one he missed. Steven carried us for a portion of that game when we really needed it. We actually started to win more clearances when Steele went to the middle, not playing on the wing. Our Centre Clearance positioning needs work. Not sure why we don't have players on Longer's left side considering he taps with his right hand. We left all that space for the Lions to work into. Our spacing throughout the ground needs work too. Brisbane did a very good job to clog it up but at the same time we struggled to make space for players to lead into little pockets or make run and carries. I thought Long was fine, had a couple of mistakes but put his body on the line a few times and did some clever things. I miss Riewoldt already !

Everytime he came on screen, he made a mistake or the brisbane player got it. Maybe different at the ground, but just horrible on TV.
Bruce didnt stand out much, so 3 goals is a great return.

Both have the work rate and run that you don't see on TV. Bruce was all over the ground and was getting back and running really strong leads. I remember his first game as a forward against the Dogs, his running patterns for forward looked ideal. He didn't get much kicked to him but was always clever. He's a smarter footy player than he seems. Long chases with intent and a lot of his bad stuff today was with his sloppy ball handling but he did plenty right including pressuring every player in his area. His pace and ability to chase for long distances look really good. He goes in very hard, shepherds and keeps players honest around him. I liked his game.

Very much a mixed bag. 1st/4th Q's were good, 2nd/3rd Q's not so much. Always happy with a Round 1 win though.

- Steven BOG back to his best. Seb picked up where he left off last year. Armo was pretty solid great to see him back. Koby decent. Zorko is a star and Steele shut him out of the game completely and had more of an impact himself offensively in the 4th. Longer struggled against a very good player in Martin.

- Billings is so damaging in the forward half. 5 shots on goal (kicked 2) and 3 goal assists to go along with 26 disposals and 9 marks. AA this year.

- GOAT! 30 disposals 9 marks 1 goal and one of our best from start to finish. Bloke is ready to explode after teasing for the last couple of years.

- Fair few people on here were questioning Brown's spot in the team, thought he was excellent today. Carlisle wasn't very involved early but had a great 2nd half, and between today and last years game has held Hipwood to 9 touches. Robbo looks like continuing his 2017 form.

- Brucey had a very good game, would love if we could get that sort of output from him weekly. Membrey played very well but his radar was a bit off. Gresh looked super dangerous. Long was very much a mixed bag, made quite a few mistakes but was so much more involved than he was in his games last year. Super excited by the potential of our forward line.

- Hunter showed a bit, mostly floated in and out but was very good in the 4th. Great for him to get a debut goal. Hopefully Coff plays soon.

- Webster did a few good things but was mostly poor I thought, in an ideal world for me Coff/White go passed him within the next year or two. Didn't think Sincs played too bad but him only having one kick was very disappointing as he's our best kick. At one point he handballed it too Koby next to him for no reason when he was under zero pressure, could've easily kicked it himself and should've considering Koby is an average kick.

- Yes Paddy was disappointing but let's not all just jump into bashing him, the guy desperately needs the continuity at AFL level that he's never had yet in his career. Just pump the games into him, it was only one game he won't play that poorly on a regular basis. Looked good in JLT, let's back him in.

- Getting smashed the badly in the clearances by Brisbane is a big concern. Think we are over possessing the ball as well based on what we've seen of us so far this year. We must beat North next week.

drop Mcartin and bring in Marshall absolute no brainer

I think we will play Paddy for a chain of games just to justify the investment in him. I would think he's got about 2 weeks to come good or Marshall and Battle would be looking over his shoulder.

I disagree. I thought he was beaten by a very lively Charlie Cameron in the first half, but fought back to take the points overall. I can't imagine how badly Coffield or White would be beaten by someone as quick and agile as Cameron. Realistically we have no replacement for J-Web's pace in the backline.

With Paddy we either have to back him in now and tell him the spot his or leave him in the vfl for an extended period.

As it is now his confidence is shot and seems to second guess himself too much. You're the full forward son take control and attack the ball! Don't worry about the rest!

Good post - the kick mark ratio was an issue for a number of players today.

Again its because they have been trained or are not encouraged to make there first instinct to move to space, hence handballing is there only option. Too many 'foot planted' midfielders today.

The other thing moving does is open your field of vision much more than being stationary, plus gives you momentum thru the disposal.

Regarding Paddy how many zero input games does he get before he is dropped? Battle played a similar game last year and was dropped the next week? I hope Paddy makes it but he simply doesnt look fit and plays with no urgency at all.

2 seasons ago we missed finals by a bees dick.
Last year we dropped off a bit and werent as close to a finals spot. So basically we went backwards last season.
Then we lose arguably our greatest ever player (Roo) and a bloody good player (Joey).
This season is a bit of an unknown entity . If anybody isnt happy with a 4 goal win against any opponent this year then your kidding yourself.
