Not automatically. Just because the new toy is shiny doesn't mean you play with it ahead of the older ones.

Think you're Rating our depth a bit highly. We're not hawthorn petracca should play round 1 if his pre season goes to plan so should acres imo. We talk about the youth we need to develop so get games in to them early. That's not to say they'll play every game if their form is not up to standard but I hope we're bold and give our best youngsters first shot.

I don't agree.

Rating our depth or otherwise, Markworth deserves a chance to see what he can do, and Membrey would be ahead of Petracca if we wanted to bring in someone a little different.

He'll play early Petracca, but his hips have to recover, he needs to complete a preseason and has to deserve a gig more than some of the incumbent.

I'm skeptical, but if not then Wright, Acres or Roberton come in, depending on matchups, form and fitness.
I agree he needs to earn it, but he's twice as talented as 3/4s of our list, if he has a good pre-season he slots into the 22 over plenty of players. Yes, we shouldn't play him just because he's a draft pick, but at the same time we shouldn't not play him because he's a new player.

Not against that; who does he supplant then in the 22 I named?

Off topic, but **** I hate the sub rule...

+1. You cannot make him play in the VFL if he is good enough to play in the AFL

Maybe it can go this way... Gilbert is no certainty to be ready Rnd 1. Accordingly;

FB: Dempster - Delaney - Geary
HB: Webster - Fisher - Savage
CR: Newnes - Armitage - Montagna
HF: Billings - Riewoldt - Templeton
FF: Membrey - Bruce - Hickey
RK: Longer - Steven - Weller
Int: Dunstan - Petracca - Ray
Sub: Markworth

Let's have a go with what I see as a probable draft haul (Petracca, Blakely & McKenzie) plus Membrey, the upgrades and Richo's apparent hardon for Bruce as a fwd...

SENIORS:
FB: Dempster - Delaney - Geary
HB: Gilbert - Fisher - Savage
CR: Newnes - Armitage - Montagna
HF: Billings - Riewoldt - Templeton#
FF: Membrey# - Bruce - Hickey
RK: Longer - Steven - Weller#
Int: Dunstan - Webster# - Ray#
Sub: Markworth#

# next to players who I would replace with Petracca. In the case of Weller, it includes moving Armitage and Dunstan into the starting midfield.

I'd consider Ray. Like his experience, but he's not the way forward.

The others have important roles to play IMO.

The sub rule is being abolished next year, isn't it?

This keeps popping up from time to time but I have never seen any article or news about it being dropped at all.

Personally I think going back to a 4 man bench is the way to go. Subs just stifle development too much and I dont think really compensates for injury that much.

And it's a pain in the ass for the fantasy comps

If Petracca is fit and in form and all that I would fully expect that he would immediately make us a better team, just like how Billings and Dunstan were pretty much both automatic selections last year (albeit we had a lot of injuries for most of it).

He will probably play the sort of role Billings did last season, but will be infinitely stronger than Jack was, probably fitter (I doubt Jack would have been doing 14+ beep tests this time last year) and more up for spells in the midfield. I see no reason why he won't be a forward line/goalkicking version of what Dunstan was for us this year. Richo will also love his defensive capabilities up there due to his speed, strength, agility and fierce tackling, an area that JB was really lacking in. He could be a little bit Hamill-like in that regard. Kicking efficiency (especially inside 50) may be the only area that Billings of this year would have a clear edge over Petracca of next year in.

Slightly off topic, but thought I'd throw my team together based on where we will be in 3 years time.

Assuming we nab petracca, ANB, R Mac and Neilson this year. I'm also assuming our vets have all retired and That we pick up an early draft pick next year. (I've nominally picked parish for us next year, but obviously that could change)

B- Dempster, Delaney, Geary
HB- Acres, Neilson, Webster
C- Newnes, Dunstan, Parish
HF- Billings, White, petracca
F- Templeton, R Mac, Membrey
R- Hickey, Armo, Steven
Int- Markworth, Savage, Ross, ANB

Actually, that's not looking too bad!

Dempster's apparently said this year is his last... And don't rate Wright?

Damn, shot down inside 3 minutes! :)
Ok- we need to find a back pocket pronto. Anyone got stevie baker's number?
Actually completely forgot about wright. So that's an easy swap. Dempster for wright
Thanks for the help Unc. :)

I'm still open to the idea of Roberton not being useless forever just because he had a bad year.
Also strange to be discussing Dempster but not Gilbert.

Gilbert has always worried me with his disposal. I reckon he tries to kick the cover off it rather than just spot up a target. Even if he is still around in 3 years i reckon he will be squeezed out of our best 22.
His best was very good a few years back, but don't reckon he will ever recapture that evasiveness.

+1. Important to us structually.
