Apparently he will be ready for round 1. He definitely won't be on the LTI list.

Go back one year. They said the same thing last time he broke his foot.

"he'll be right for round 1". I was amazed. I thought it would be more like June/July when he would turn up as a minimum (based on my experience of a 5th Metatarsal fracture which didn't require surgery). He turned up round 1 and I thought I was stupid and they can really do wonders.

Except... by about round 4, the club revealed the fracture hadn't healed and he needed more surgery. And now, there's this stupid round 1 thing again!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Can they just stop effing around with careers and serious injuries?

5th Metatarsal is essentially a 3 month injury (to get back to where you were before... ). And even then, from personal experience, it's never the same.

Gilbert has had multiple SURGERIES on that exact nub and really I see him as taking A LOT LONGER THAN 3 months (ie post round 1).

The club needs to be really conservative!!:mad:

Why the Lack of Support for Nathan Wright. in my opinion he is clearly in our best 22. was playing awesome at the start of 2014 season until he got injured.

Also think Farren Ray needs to be faded out, similar to how C.Jones was in the 2014 season.

He should still be starting. Who would you replace for N. Wright?

I agree that he won't be available round 1 but I doubt he'll get on the LTI list before then so that Saad/Sinclair/Payne will be available.

Interestingly, no white or lee either.

How much VFL do you watch?

I get to about 5-6 games a year and don't miss any televised Zebras games. This along with following the Zebs results and match review closely every week is enough for me to know that Bruce did not "dominate" when swung forward for the Zebras as you say.

There was 1 game in particular when he had a really good game and clunked a few marks. He still only kicked 2 goals and it was hardly dominating. Lee also had some good games in the VFL last year and kicked a couple of bags of 4 & 5, one of which was on Brian Lake. I don't see how Bruce has shown more as a forward at this point.

For the games I did not see live please enlighten me as to what I am missing because the stat sheet certainly does not lend any weight to your view that Bruce was a dominant forward in the 2's last year. Yes, stats do not always tell the whole story but to be "dominant" as you say, I would have thought you would need to do more than have 1 game where you take 10 marks and kick 2 goals.

Despite not having a full preseason at our club (until this one now), Lee ended up in the ruck and the exercise did get him involved more. His stats were not flattering but he was improving. Bruce is a careless kick at times and his instinct is to spoil rather than mark, a reaction that will serve him well in defence. Lee is a careful kick, he converts more chances than he misses. His lack of strength conditioning sees him less able to bullock his way into position and less able to hold his spot in a marking contest. He finally is having a preseason and I hope he will benefit greatly from it. I am yet to be convinced he can play a key forward role but he at least has the fundamentals. Bruce seems better suited to defence and /or that ill-defined utility role. Interesting that despite the height differential, it was Lee who was given the rucking role and not Bruce.

Hickey/Longer switching between ruck and deep forward, less effective gets subbed off at 3/4 time for a runner. (Losing Stanley I don't really know who else can play the 2nd ruck/fwd role...)

Bench could be swapped for a few others, preseason will be telling. Would love to get Acres and Templeton into the line up!

Bruce as 2nd tall fwd until white/mccartin ready, or fisher inj.

I honestly don't think Richo will be playing our "best" side every week. He will be keen to blood some young players and get them valuable experience. We seen it last year and I'm happy to see it again this year.

Would love Acres, McCartin, Goddard and the likes get 10 to 15 games into them this year.

Hopefully guys like Dunstan, Billings, Wright etc can play most if the year.

Comment: The Saints are playing Greater Western Sydney in round one and they'll be keen to test their new players immediately and give supporters hope after a disappointing 2014. Tim Membrey was recruited as ready-made support for Nick Riewoldt, while there is no reason Paddy McCartin can't be thrown into the cauldron in round one. He would push out Josh Bruce, who moved forward in 2014. After the departure of Rhys Stanley to Geelong, two genuine ruckmen will be required, with Tom Hickey and Billy Longer both working to build their tools in attack. The Saints would be keen to see promising youngster Blake Acres push into the 22 quickly as well as Nathan Wright. Hugh Goddard could find himself making a dream round one start if Sam Gilbert isn't fully fit. - Nathan Schmook
Dunstan on a wing? Savage as the sub when he's proven himself to not suit the role?

How do they get paid to write this stuff?

If you have Bruce down forward, why can't he be the second ruck? Unless he's pinch hitting in the ruck is rather get games into White and McCartin and with an aging backline I think we need to look at Bruce taking over back there.

Midfield & centre square rotations to include Longer, Weller, Newnes, Montagna, Geary & Membrey to allow Hickey, Armo, Dunstan & Steven rest

Backline appears quite 'aged', but still feel this is our strongest setup

Forward line plays 3 genuine talls with a medium big-bodied Membrey & 2 smalls with exquisite skills

I've seen Membrey play a number of times in the NEAFL, & although it is an inferior league compared to VFL & SANFL etc, he will be more than capable to play short 3-5 minute stints on the ball each quarter if needed

I don't recall Bruce ever playing ruck, at any level. Would love to be corrected as he would have serious versatility if he could play as a tall utility (def/ruck/fwd), depending on match ups and game day flow.
But yeah, purely as a forward I would love White/McCartin to overtake Bruce, but feel that at their current development, Bruce will get the nod in round 1. As soon as Fisher/Gilbert goes down, Bruce straight into a key defensive post.

Based on Gilbert's suspect return date, this is what I'd like to see in Round 1:

B: Dempster Delaney Geary
HB: Savage Fisher Wright
C: Montagna Dunstan Acres
HF: Membrey Riewoldt Billings
F: Templeton White Bruce
R: Hickey Armitage Steven
I: Longer Weller Newnes
Sub: Ross
E: Webster Murdoch Siposs

You could almost swap the entire Ruck line above with the entire Interchange line for the majority of the game, say 75%, with up-and-coming mids (Billings, Savage, Templeton) cycling throughout the game for about 25%- gaining exposure.

The Saints lineup for Round 1:

FB: Bruce, Delaney, Dempster
HB: Geary, Gilbert, Webster
C: Armitage, Steven, Newnes
HF: Dunstan, Riewoldt, Acres
FF: Saad, Membrey, Billings
R: Longer, Montagna, Weller
I: Hickey, Curren, Schneider
Sub:Ray

Unlucky to miss out and all likely to don the green vest throughout the season are:

Wright, Ross, Saunders, White, Fisher, Templeton, Goddard, Savage

Mackenzie and Goddard will benefit from ageing bodies and bring their core skill sets to the fore sooner rather than later. Both of these players will put pressure on Savage’s position in the pecking order immediately. I hope that McCartin is given an opprtunity early in his career to learn from Roo. If White can inject a couple of extra pistons into his engine in the off season he is also a chance, however, I agree that he will start the year behind Membrey.

Markworth, Siposs, Simpkin, and Lee are all under pressure to stay on a list for different reasons. Likely retirements from Schneider and Fisher may keep a couple safe, but these guys are holding on to the bottom end of the rope.

First up, welcome, but second;

- Gilbert is unlikely to be ready round 1 based on past history, and in any event won't play CHB.
- I take it you don't rate Sam Fisher?
- We didn't grab Tim Membrey for him to play as an undersized full forward; we're not the Dogs.
- Schneider is a rookie.
