Round 1 Team 2022

If we are focussed on development the following shouldn’t play or be on our list:

Madgen
Thomas
Sier
Wilson
Sidebottom (trade)
Cox (trade)
Ruscoe
Thomas
Rantall
Murphy

We obviously can’t turn over that many with our retirees but that’s the status from my perspective.

While I agree with a lot on this list, I think those names in bold need to be given more time and opportunity.

Ruscoe showed enough across the HBF after failing as a forward, I think many are far to harsh on a 19 year old who has played less than 15 games. His 4 full games across the Half Back line saw him average 19.25 disposals (at 76.5% d/e), 4.75 marks, 2.25 tackles and 4.75 intercept possessions. IMO Trey has shown enough to remain on the list and should be ahead of the likes of Madgen, Wilson and Murphy to play in backline alongside Howe as the 3/4 defenders.

Rantall for mine was always going to be late bloomer of the 2019 draft. Only played the 4 games but showed improvement on the weekend with his tagging role on Parish. While he would need to add more strings to his bow, there could be a role for him as a run-with midfielder and is worth persisting with in my eyes.

Prior to any trades.

B: Howe - Roughead - Maynard
HB: Pendlebury - Moore - Quaynor
C: Poulter - Adams - N.Daicos
HF: Henry - Mihocek - J.Daicos
F: McCreery - Cameron - Elliott
R: Grundy - DeGoey - Crisp
INT: Sidebottom - Ginnivan - WHE - Noble

Next in line: Ruscoe - Thomas (we all know he probably gets picked Rd 1) - Bianco - Macrae - McInnes
Looks by far the most realistic although I have Bianco ahead of Poulter

Pretty skint squad even at full strength really but that’s why we finished second last I suppose

B: Howe Roughead Murphy

HB: IQ Moore Maynard

C: T Brown Adams Crisp

HF: N Daicos Checkers J Daicos

FF: Elliot Cameron Henry

R: Grundy Pendlebury DeGoey

Int: Sidebottom McRae Ginnavin Noble

Emg: WHE McCreery Lynch Bianco Johnson (medi sub)

I have faith in Murphy and T Brown but having said that they would be the first to get a rest if form wasn’t good.

I’m sure I’ve missed someone but I can’t think who?

Agreed. Also the who tackles the most, who also gets the more clearances. Won the copeland and was AA last year. People like to put him down that he isnt that good because his ball use can be shifty at times. But heart and soul of our midfield brigade.

Along with him, Moore and Howe, Elliott missing for half the year with his broken leg wasn't great either.

Certainly wasn’t a year where we could cover those top 10 ranked players in our team missing too many games given the amount of depth we moved on at the end of 2020.

Josh D goes into the midfield, not at half forward.

IQ Roughie Howe
Maynard Moore Madgen
J Daicos Pendles WHE
Elliott Mihocek Henry
Ginnivan Cameron Thomas

Grundy Adams De Goey

Crisp N Daicos Noble Sidey

Emerg T Brown Bianco Murphy McCrae

Before we know of any changes

Quaynor - Roughy - Maynard
Crisp - Moore - Howe
WHE - De Goey - J.Daicos
Thomas - Cameron - Ginnivan
Henry - Mihochek - Ellott
Grundy - Sidebottom - Adams
Noble - Ruscoe - Macrae - N.Daicos

If no JT, replace with McCreery. Selection might be tough as I imagine Reef will put his hand up for round 1 after a big pre-season.

So Pendles did leave after saying he would definitely stay. Pity

In terms of developing into a good team then I believe these are the gaps -

Three defenders, two key forwards and more mids.

It is possible Johnson and Begg could both make it and be very good but I am not convinced yet.

Cameron is ok for a versatile bench option.

Hopefully GW can recruit one or two underrated key defenders. The cupboard is absolutely bare.

My targets to fill some gaps -

Sydney Stack - slightly damaged goods but wow looks classy.
Noah Balta - coming back from injury but ideal

I thought Josh Corbett looked good against us. However I don’t watch the Suns much.

Nice balance but I would bet my left nut Nick Daicos plays round 1.

I’m happy to bet your right he won’t…

But everyone wants to play their new toys it seems.

No way you would pick WHE over Poulter we have to be realistic of where we are at.

That midfield you have picked is fairly experienced when the only one of the centre line or the followers have played under 100 games. So the argument WHE is needed for his experience isn’t valid

Just that WHE is a better footballer at the moment is enough really.

WHE is massively overrated offers nothing. Averaged 16 disposals this year playing on the wing compared to Poulter’s 15

LOL, of course.

When was the last time he actually impacted a game? He has been no where since 2018. We are in a rebuild their is no point playing blokes like WHE

LOL, okay, if you say so.

There is no realistic scenario where we don't finish bottom 4 next year.
I broadly share your general pessimism, but I think your statement there is a bit too absolute.

For instance, I think we could win a couple more in '22, and thereby avoid the bottom four, if any four of these following actually happen. In no order....

1. Moore is fit and healthy and is the AA CHB.

2. Our preferred back seven of nine is pretty stable.

3. The new coach has a decent first year, changes a few things, improves belief & spirit, broadly gets the lads onside. Has a good win or two. Is basically not a shitshow.

4. New Daicos hits the ground running, and is a Rising Star contender.

5. Grundy goes better than this year or last year.

6. The 2020 draft class improve at a normal rate or better.

7. We switch from a rubbish gameplan to a so-so one.

8. We replace a few 3rd rate mature players with some 2nd rate ones.

9. Someone from the Ugly Bunch, ie Wilson, Keane, Browns, Madgic, Noble, Kelly, Murphy, stamps themselves as an AFL standard long-termer. (There's no place like home, x100.)

10. Degoey becomes a legit (top 10?) full-time midfielder.

11. Adams gets some help on the inside.

12. A new Ruck/Stoppage coach cracks the DaVinci Code and converts Grundy tap dominance into strong clean clearance numbers.

13. From somewhere, we find an ok KPF.

14.

If we are to be competitive the following should not be in the 22.

Ruscoe
Madgen
Noble
C Brown
J Thomas
Bianco
Rantall
The Irish
Cox
Poulter
Murphy
Sier
Wilson

I can't blame you if you stopped watching in about round nine, but Ruscoe actually came back and showed some great signs as a defender. He's our designated kicker now!
