Agree, most of the girls tried to the best of their ability.

Amy McDonald was best on ground I would have thought - carved us up a again.

That free kick was given so errantly and out of proportion to what had gone before in the game. It was a howler!

yeah agree, Meg MacDonald and Eilish Sheerin in the votes

what killed us was S.Hoskng miss from barely 20 metres out in 2nd Q and those last 2 exit kicks to Wakefield, which Gunjaca marked both 🤦‍♂️
get a ball up or throw in on the wing in that last 2 minutes, who knows what would have happened

if i'm not mistaken, S.Hoskng & Ellie McKenzie turned over 3/4 of their disposals, uncharacteristically Ellie couldn't hit a side of a Amish barn 🤦‍♂️

100 effective disp to nearly 150 effective disp, doesn't help either

yeah Ferg alluded to that when interviewed start of 2nd Q

Cat's coach Lowther has turned every game since end of 2021 season, when he nearly lost his job, into a full on defensive, 1 - 2+ in the back half scrappy game
that's Geelong's game plan
he see's it as the the only way his side can be competitive, without being blown out of the water

but no excuses, we knew what was coming, played into that game style and paid the price

i will say that i enjoy the best players playing well, but G.Prespakis is looking for trouble
she leads in head 1st into every tackle, Selwood style, she's developing a very bad and dangerous habit very early on her career
her chances of neck, head injuries are on the high side
Fully agree she plays for free kicks , a lot of ginnivin about that young lass,

Yep Re watched last 2min , CW was woeful in not creating a contest , she’s big and strong need to be way better , never mind her crap conversion either . Hosk x 2 are always pretty crude with disposal , not sure they’ll ever get better , thought she won it really well . Ellie was pretty good ,, can be much better though and hope she builds on that performance

Spot on. I can see why we chased her. I'm thinking that Yassir has good finishing skills usually, so Steph to chase and harrass while Yassir can finish off

Won't be the first player to suffer some 2nd year syndrome..... I still think she will be OK. Sits in the side better when KB plays.
I’ll give Steph maybe one more chance , looked lost to me ,, nowhere near it ,, was a big chance 4Q to show what she had in a contest then foot race ,, not surprisingly was well beaten

AFL confirms major blunder led to Georgie Prespakis’ match-winning goal for Geelong: ‘An error was made’

It was the most thrilling moment of the AFLW’s opening round, but it should have happened differently.

The AFL has confirmed Geelong AFLW star Georgie Prespakis should not have been the one to take the shot at goal which proved to be the match-winner against Richmond on Sunday night.

The Cats were awarded a free kick down the ground for a late sling tackle by Monique Conti on Prespakis, who had already handballed the ball 15 metres towards goal when she was dragged to the ground.

Haha you went early on her last year ,, has long way to go , she ll be better than that , needs to get some uncontested ball , work hard like conti does , she has pace and can kick , should be receiving more ball
Problem is she can’t get hold of the ball
Bo.

Ellie was absolutely awful until the last quarter when she backed herself and played on her instincts.
The girls are overcoached.

NO it’s a trait I’ve noticed in W footy I commented earlier that not too many are natural footballers that get where the ball is and know how to spread and attract the ball . Take conti she just doesnt stop wanting the ball from go to woe, millzy and several others seem to sit out and wait for invite despite having the skills , Steph Williams looks to be another like this

Spot on Tigs, How many times did the cats and tigers players keep ducking and they were rewarded. I counted 5, 3 to cats and 2 to Tigers and all got frees.
Was outrageous the ducking from both sides. Couldn’t believe they were being rewarded. Was like having multiple Ginnivan’s out there.

Ok I am utterly confused now.

So it is a downfield free kick now when the player disposes while being slung around in a tackle and after disposing of it the tackler almost immediately lets go. That is new. I will look forward to that being paid every time a player disposes of the ball in a tackle from now on.

And it is also a free kick if you rotate the player to the ground and both their arms are free and their head doesn’t hit the ground.

This just seems like total bullsh!t from the AFL.

Good to see Robbo blow up about that terrible umpiring decision on 360 tonight. He’s saying it simply isn’t good enough and the club should be up in arms. Then Gerard says we need to let umpires grow and learn with the competition! Sorry but these should be the best umpires in the land. This is a national competition and there were no other AFL games on last weekend! That was a series of basic umpiring errors that cost a game. Not good enough.

it’s hard canning Wakefield for her 3 misses when they were all into the wind.
With the stadium not complete at one end, no one ever looked like kicking anything up that end.
Geelong we’re dominant in the 3rd quarter and couldn’t do crap (without the umps help)
Nah I’m not buying that. From memory Only one of her shots was from a tough angle and distance. She made the distance on at least two with ease so kicking into the wind wasn’t a problem. She should have nailed at least one. She wasn’t the only one though. We had several easy set shots missed. Hosking missed an absolute sitter.

If we can’t handle what were really not too bad conditions then god help us when the team goes out to the cold wind swept Casey fields against much better opposition in the Dees.
We need to be better and nail some of those easy chances.

I will say that Wakefield was often forced to compete while heavily outnumbered because the cats were more than happy to peel off our other forwards who were simply not threatening on the day. She will have easier days.

The shot of the day for us was by Sheerin, unfortunately two seconds after the half time siren lol.

Time to start setting the expectations just a little higher I reckon and there’s no doubt we let one slip on the weekend.

I could not believe what i was seeing when Prespaskis took the kick. And to say it was a sling is absolute bullshit. Saving face the AFL.
How many times have the AFL said "sorry" after the men's team were rorted, now the same "sorry" for the women's team.

4 points blown because of cheating and we don't get the points back, pissed right off.

SEN Muppet just now saying it was a great contest.

Whateley excusing the umpiring.

Makes me hate Geelong even more.

Only 1game but when we started to brown off last year I reckon we went away from that aggressive use of handball that I thought really stepped up our game to be super competitive

If I was coaching W , handball would be a real focus in ball movement as it’s very achievable to transition without unforced errors. Without looking at stats , we Re kicking more and that’s problematic !

Stuffen weasel would have been ropeable if it was the other way around. F U Wankley

Yep, that was all it is - backing in their umpires because they can't be seen to do anything else. It can be such a lottery in the elite competition with part-time or casual umpires!

It is a skill to kick into the breeze, and we often do not adjust. I had a long talk with Ferg some years ago about kicking skills and he acknowledged then that the Club really doesn't do much in this space. They work with what the players come with apparently. This is playing out in the AFLW particularly. Check how many times a kick elevates more than necessary at the cost of distance particularly, but also for lack of accuracy even into a light breeze.

It's a skill that requires considerable thought and even more repetition. It's easy to explain, just harder to execute. In the fire of battle you revert to habits, some good, many not so. I have witnessed may young women and girls try and kick the belly of the football because it is a bigger target and a little more forgiving, and when pressed, it doesn't hurt their foot as much - that is the habit part. Witness that kick Mon Conti did in the second Qtr - into the breeze, a rush on the run hit the belly of the ball and it floated fortuitously into the arms of Wakefield.

Players have never been better at the trick kicks (again because of repetition), but the real money kick is still the drop punt, weighted or kicked low by foot.
