AFLW Round 1 v Geelong

I have replayed that match deciding free kick a few times. The tackle is being applied as Prespakis handballs it. Both arms are free so she can protect herself. Her head doesn’t noticeably hit the ground. It wasn’t late. There are at least 4 Geelong players between Prespakis and the ball drop.

Correct umpiring is play on 3 Tigers had it cornered, they clear it Cats would have been left with about 30 seconds max to get fro. wing through goals with a crowded 50m arc. The ump has just gone 1,2,3 and handed the Cats an chance to win it.

1. Free kick not there

2. Downfield is patently wrong as the tackles was not late

3. There are 4 Cats closer than Prespakis to the drop of the ball and 85% at least of female footballers are not making that kicking with the person on the mark at about 33 metres.

Until then I thought umps gave us some they shouldn’t have and maybe Cats a couple more. But that last bit of umpiring was grotesque by any measure.
And she landed on her stomach because Conti let her go

The shocking last decision aside we were good enough to win that.

Missed several easy shots at goal, but with D'Arcy forward and Wakefield (who was way off today, probably the worst I've ever seen her play) we were way too immobile in the forward line. Brennan would help that no end, but maybe even Sheerin, she was excellent down back but with Jess Hosking coming back, maybe the better option is to play her as a half forward. She gets more opportunity to move the ball inside 50 with that lovely left peg, she can clearly take long shots at goal too (not something many of our girls can).

Or the other option is McKenzie CHF. She didn't look quite right today, her kicking was all over the place unfortunately.

If she is as good as Cora Staunton we have another 11 seasons to go with her yet ;)

seriously true Phar Ace, having only started playing football in her late 20s after a junior soccer career

i think she is early 20's fitness and body wise, she could go well into her 30's even as late as Cora, she's a super fitness junkie

Not politically correct I know, but tend to agree. Auskick, no, but maybe junior boys under 14/15 level.

Scramble, tackle, smother, tackle again, fall over, hospital handball, kick to nowhere, tackle, run around to try to create some space, turnover. Rinse and repeat.........

Think we've been mightily spoiled when it comes to women's elite sports by our superstar women's cricket team.

Hope AFLW gets there eventually, but it's not anywhere near it yet............

It's funny, this game was tipped to be a shoot out by the so call experts. Both coaches thought otherwise by playing it with loose back each. The other games I saw this weekend were much more free-flowing. I think both coaches will probably regret it, Geelong a little less of course. We continue to be one of the worse ball handling sides, and this is in part skill based, so to over compensate we play a high pressure, turnover game. Geelong matched it and won with better ball chains - had about 10-15% more ball. There inside 50's were cleaner, we had some better shot on goal that we failed to convert. So Geelong won the midfield contests and we failed to convert - end of ball game. And still we nearly pinched. That's the takeaway.

My opinion is that they are trying too hard to play to a system when they should just be doing the basics.
I know it sounds bad, but kick the thing long and gain ground. The skills across the board aren’t good enough to handball or chip kick your way out of trouble.
that all falls on the coach.
only a select few are good enough for game plan, system based play.

I agree about the standard of of the Richmond game, but that game were the lowest scores for the round. I watched the Essadon Hawks game too, and today both teams had numbers behind the ball so it ping ponged from D50 to D50. The match winner today was a 2 goal kicker. We didn't have one.
AFLW footy is going OK. I think somehow, RFC won't have many wins. Dunno how Essadan managed it so well?
Women's cricket, football, basketball, golf, surfing are exactly the same gap between men's cricket; football, b/ball, golf and surfing. All to do with athletic ability. AFLW is making progress. My local club ~Tweed Tigers in FN NSW has produced a player picked by the pies.

Missed Katie Brennan up forward

yea , no one looked likely in f50 , it’s a worry when you can’t nail 25m out time after time

Did D'Arcy play up fwd ?

in hindsight MAYBE should've played one of our backup key fwds in Jemima Woods or Amelia Peck for some contested marking ???? (other than just Wakefield)

I have no doubt the game is progressing, I mentioned earlier I was impressed with the expansion sides and felt they were better placed than us a few years back ,, today was just an ugly scrappy game , you get that , we can play better , we looked very good in the praccys,,,kb will be a huge addition of class to f50

Women’s cricket has been going way longer than the AFLW so stands to reason the quality would be higher. Also the Australian women’s team is the best 11 in the country

The other thing is that they get to bring the boundaries in. I think the woman's game would be a much better spectacle if they played on a ground about forty meters shorter than normal

Still the standard is clearly improving year on year and will only continue to get better
