The defence was outstanding I thought. Hammered in clearances (36-21) all night, it put a tough job on the backline. Conceded some goals and made some mistakes but that's going to happen when it's coming in so often. They also had to generate the majority of our offence. Will check later how many of our shots at goal came from rebound from half back. In terms of intercepts: Paton 8, Clark 8, Coffield 9, Howard 6, Wilkie 8 (his best game in a while I thought, was outstanding), Carlisle 6. Only Long down on his normal form with 2.

Bruce needs to hang up the mic, unbearable to listen to.

Looking forward to seeing us fix up our clearances next week.

Imagine being told a year ago we’d be in a global pandemic and saints would be second on the ladder mid season...
He's terrible. Talks like an over excited 10 year old chasing his first sexual experience from a bad 70's sit com. Golly, gee, gosh Bruce time to talk like an adult in the 21st century or give it away cos you're coming across as a washed up pedo right now.

Even Steele was down IMO.

I know his stats look fairly impressive, but didn't win a lot of inside footy.

Credit to our backline for holding up so well considering we were comprehensively beaten in the guts.

He was’nt happy in rooms with Skrobo ....thought we were smashed around contest.

Really poor standing metres off opponent stoppage after stoppage with exception of Steele.

Thought midfield totally played like downhill skiers watch Dew talking to Miller on sideline
he was continually saying to every one of their mids they are only running one way.

Thought we were bloody lucky last night
..poor selection Ryder was exhausted very very early
they had Abbott & Bytel available stood out like a beacon again selection intregrity playing Phillips
a complete joke ...

Re your obvious frustration re the Phillips over Bytel selection (even though they aren't any where near comparative players),

The decision to not play Geary was obviously made late. It was absolutely the correct call to not play a debutant in that situation where they were not sure if he was going to play a mere few hours before the game started. That would have been unfair too Bytel to throw him in for his first game like that.

And whether it was Phillips or Bytel, it wouldnt have made a difference to the result or how the team played overall. Questioning selection integrity because someone whose been around the cusp of selection - got called up in the JLT, performed well in scratch matches and been emergency a few times - played over someone who hasn't played a game yet is a bit ridiculous.

When you compare the teams from last night, it's pretty awesome how much value we're getting out of mid-tier draft picks, and astute trades this year (amazing that Butler is actually the lowest main draft pick in the squad for last night!):

Certainly not like anyone can point to our list and claim we got every concession under the sun. The three rookies have been great pickups, and we make really solid picks for our our 2nd/3rd rounders ...

I didn't say it was you, people will back themselves even when the evidence says the opposite. It's okay to say you thought Long would be better but he wasn't. He had a terrible game, completely separately from Savage he just didn't play well. Some people because they thought he'd be an obvious first picked upgrade on Savage choose to deny the evidence in front of them. If Long was a whipping boy people would be saying he should never play again off that game. He stunk it up.
I don't think he stunk it up Gringo. I think that's a bit harsh but you're entitled to your opinion. I thought he wasn't great but he certainly wasn't the worst player on the ground. As birdy stated he was good defensively , took a nice grab and I thought he was left out to dry by some of his team mates poor skill execution

They had Byrnes there as emergency.. ready to go ...as for how team played look at the clearances
You don’t seem to get it Ratten has internally said that Bytel & Abbott were outstanding wanted to play them
this week his words , not mine.....

I will say that I think we need more defensive midfield depth. Besides Steele none of our other mids are that defensivelly minded except Dunstan who is obviosuly injured. I though Billings did a great job at this though. In times where we are really struggling ala yesterday we need a change in dynamic in the midifeld. Hopefully Bytel/Byrnes can be that. It's just a worry because its probaly where we have the lest depth.

Also, give him a bonus every time he triggers old melted-head Caro

As an aside, Kane Cornes on his show this morning was saying it’s all very well that Carlisle was whacked for what he did, but how come no mention of the Crows players ( can’t remember who he named) targeting Gawn’s shoulder the entire night.

Something that really frustrated me all night was the amount of awful centre bounces that weren't recalled.

And the awful holding the ball lottery. They seem to have stopped in the back now too. You don’t need to roll a player in the tackle. Just mow them down and it’s holding the ball most of the time.

A lot of people saying with the benefit of hindsight that we should have rested Ryder, which is a fair point. Hopefully we coaching staff now know how to best use our rucks, which will be a big bonus in the latter part of the season.

That being said, I wanted to point out what a monumental effort for Ryder with three minutes to go (following Clark's clearance) to hand it off to Butler to put us ahead by ten points. A brilliant piece of work when it was 2 v 2 on the wing.

Byrnes wouldnt have changed the clearances situation.

Ratts may have said that but didn't select them despite being the head coach. Obviously a reason for that. I'll put more stock in his public actions over what he apparently said internally.

And not throwing a debutant in an hour before the game was absolutely the correct call.

good info 66 - just had a look at steele stats this year.
He doesn't get as much of it as some of the mids (Neale - Brad Crouch ), however averages the same as Martin , Cripps and Dangerfield / Bont a few less disposals, but one thing that stands out he has far less turnovers and Clangers than Martin , Cripps , Bont and Dangerfield.

So Steele is flying under the radar - so impact on a game I actually can say I rate him higher than Cripps , Dangerfield , Martin , Bont and Oliver.

Oliver 2nd in total clangers
Martin 5th
Cripps 10th
B.Crouch 10th
Dangerfield 15th

Steele nowhere near the top 50

Turnovers
Oliver 2nd
Neale 20th
Bont 25th
Martin 42nd
Cripps 69th
B.Crouch 25th
Dangerfield 36th

Steele 98th

Steele
● Ranked 10th in Total Disposals
● Ranked 10th in Total Effective Disposals
● Ranked 13th in Total Contested Possessions
● Ranked 2nd in Total Tackles

Martin is 29
Dangerfield is 30
Bont is 25
Cripps is 25
Oliver is 23
B.Crouch is 27
Neale is 27
Steele is 24yrs 7mths and has improved every year and has gone to another level - if they call Bont , Danger , Cripps , Martin elite - Steele has actually been better than all of them and he is younger than all of them.

Thankfully they have calmed down on paying them directly in front of goal. Some of the ones paid in the Freo and Adelaide games were criminal.

Hard to think of a more integral five minute patch of football for St Kilda than Hunter Clark's last night. Not since the 2010 Grand Final Draw.

Only twice has St Kilda won three consecutive interstate away games in a season: 2009 & 2010.

Butler is elite. Took it on himself to make absolutely sure of that last goal. This is why you go and get premiership players.

Decision against Howard in the 2nd quarter was one of the worst ever made. Junior umpire overruled two umpires with GF experience from 100 metres away because of no to minimal contact.

I think we have just made the Sexton bit up to justify it to be honest. Long is there for run and carry, he didn't do that. Anyway hope he plays a blinder next week, we need all hands on deck against an experienced Geelong who have Danger there as a small forward at the moment.
The new goat, I like longy and want him to be a star.

He may have been a bit cannon shy coming off a three week suspension, needs to nail down that defensive roll or like Blake he’ll be minister without portfolio. The replays on at 4.30 on fox I might watch it again paying particular attention where possible to who longy lined up on.

Byrnes is a clearance player , Phillips is a VFL player and will never be anything else than outside running
player with no footskills pretty useless in turnover game .

Not calling for debutante 1 hour before the game .

Love Ratts ..think he is absolutely fantastic coach rapt we won a game we would normally lose.
