The Festival of Footy got off to a terrible start, but in recent days it’s given us some highly entertaining games, and this one might have been the best in terms of quality.

This game had everything, freakish goals, comebacks, umpiring so bad it made your eyes water and commentary that made your ears bleed.

I can’t criticise the umpires too much, they’re not the only ones having a horrendous 2020, and every time the AFL tweaks the rules, a piece of each umpire’s soul dies.

I imagine when Steve Hocking informs the umpiring department of new rules or interpretations, they react in similar fashion to Harrison Ford when he received dialogue for Star Wars from George Lucas, famously saying, “You can type this sh*t, but you can't say it.”

Despite the closeness on the scoreboard for a lot of the game, it was clear that Port Adelaide were the superior side throughout the game, but there were moments where it looked like the pressure was getting to Port.

Charlie Dixon’s two misses in the first quarter from dead in front would have had Power fans thinking, ‘we’re going to blow this’, as they watched the Tigers creep back into the game like, well, tigers.

This feeling that it could go pear shaped (pun sort of intended, but more by accident), for Port was set aside, when Richmond decided to intentionally lose the game by giving away a 100-meter penalty.

The first fifty came from Dustin Martin shoving Tom Rockliff, and as Rockliff ran forward to take his kick, Josh Caddy decided to run in front of him the whole way instead of getting out of the way.

The term ‘decided’ might be a bit much, decision making requires a brain.

Damien Hardwick’s reaction in the box was basically my reaction to the entire year a fury so pure it could melt the strongest metal.

Sutcliffe out for Mayes
Rozzee in for whoever kid is a jet
What are the 4other changes you make to complete your best 22

Not sure on the context of this fwiw, was just commenting on Mayes.... but ftr Sutcliffe was forward and would be the swap for Rozee. Commentators got him and Lienert confused a bit last night which is why you may have thought he was defending.

Lienert also out, and Burton would be first in line for that spot at full strength.

Mots for Farrell another pretty straightforward swap you would think, Kane had a breakout game a few games back but if we are picking purely to win games now Mots has had the better 2020.

Also head to head Marshall would have to take Georgis spot if we want to retain the height profile.

Other guys to come in are Mayes and arguably Ebert, but there are multiple ways to achieve this as we have a few flex players. For example, Id be bringing in Mayes for Houston, but not to drop Houston but to put him in the middle, which then pushes Mots forward, and sadly possibly pushes a Woodcock type out of the side... its all complicated and purely hypothetical as you never make a true best 22 decision after round 1.

Is it just me or did Robbie’s game fly under the radar? 3 & 22
No he got in the votes in the Channel 9 Sunday Show, along with Boak, Wines and Butters.

Gray is handling the footy much more cleanly now than in the first six matches of the season. If he, Dixon and Rozee fire in the back end of this year then we are going to be hard to stop.

I just need to bring up a sometimes unpopular subject that some of my fellow posters have issues with and that’s the twilight Saturday night time slot. I love it because you get the best of both worlds - one half in daylight and the other under lights. The weather was perfect last night and therefore it suited our game. Please give us more of this time slot, thank you.

This probably won't be popular but I've already seen more in Mitch's handful of games than in Todd's three plus seasons. If it was a choice between the two, it would be MG everyday of the week.

That said, both will be part of our best 22 once Westy retires.

Mitch looks 100% a better goal kicking forward than Todd already, but Todd is developing a high leading link up element to his game.

This game had a finals like intensity and lived up to the billing. Need to be better in front of goal but our method and system held up. We are no longer requiring on sheer patches of individual brilliance amongst a chaotic game plan to score goals. But rather, our system is putting our players in advantageous positions where their talent can take over into scoreboard pressure.

There comes a point when a team gets a result that shows they have firmly 'arrived' - that is, to be seriously considered as a top tier 1 club capable of winning the flag. In the last 20 years I've felt that moment 3 times. First time was against Essendon at footy park in 2001. Second time was round 6 against Geelong at Adelaide Oval in 2014. Last night was the third time.

One thing I feel great about is how strong our players are. Even our short people are tough. No one is shirking any contest. Our players are breaking tackles with ease (richmond stuck very few last night, even Amon and Woodcock broke out of a few), and our tackles stuck firm. We are ready for finals footy.

I reckon the St. Kilda loss was the wake up call we needed - ever since, we've played some astonishing footy. And the scary thing opposition teams is that we still haven't played the perfect game (goal kicking): if it all clicks, somebody will cop an almighty flogging.
I agree, but I also think we were actually stuffed from those two previous games where we travelled both ways in the same day. Port Adelaide are the only team that has had to travel the same day for a 1pm game and return the same day. All teams travelling to SA have had a later start time and stayed over night.

Some good ins and there will be players unluckily who miss out
Just raised the point of best 22 given the relative outs of both sides
Great game last night
This and west coast v cats
Head and shoulders above all others this year

Wasn't it just one cheeky slap at the start of the game? Not continuous targetting?

Yeah as I recall Chad and Browny get along well and Chad gave the knee a cheeky tap and asked 'How's the knee Browny?' Browny growled at him and they moved on.

It was nowhere near what Carlisle was doing. If Chad had done that Browny would have decked him.

Same result if you tried to check Dusty's prostate in the post-match huddle. ;)

They have points in common, but their differences are more interesting. Todd has really looked better playing at CHF than closer to goal.

I can see Dixon, Mitch, Todd, and Ladhams playing together. “Too many talls!” Not at all. Just look how they move.

Gray was excellent. You could see he is aging and slowing down, a few situations where e little bit of extra zip would have helped, but for most of the match he was fine. Still got it. The cream rose to the top.

The effortless one handed take of Zak's lightning handball. So many players would have fumbled it.

All I can think of today is that sad, pathetic, Crows fan who made a burner account and was incessantly PMing Port posters after the Brisbane game.

I hope you're reading and enjoying this, ****head.
