Review Round 11, 2020 vs Richmond

We are going to lose more games. That is a given. But our best I believe is good enough to beat everyone this year. We are a genuinely good team this year.

Great. 9-8 and an Elimination Final lose to West Coast incoming.

Centre clearance runs have been more of a concern for me.

I feel much more confident about that since the new Rocky came back.

What do we call him now?

Rocky III?

Rocky I - Brisbane accumulator
Rocky II - Port stagnator
Rocky III - Port, The Wall

We call him Usain.

There are a few things that I liked about the outcome of that game:
* The underplaying of the outcome. We only won by 3 goals, and Richmond are bleating loud and long about their "6 premiership players missing", and the lopsided free kick count. In reality, we outplayed them comprehensively, and were an 8-10 goals better team in general play.
* We beat them by using their own game against them - by applying the same level of pressure to them that they apply to other sides. And they hated it! We really got into their heads, resulting in several undisciplined acts that they will not be held to account for. Would Cotchin, Houli, Nankervis, Astbury and Edwards have coped any better with that level of pressure than Riewoldt and Dusty et al did?
* At some stages of the game, Richmond were able to raise their pressure level to the extreme levels too, and our game and shape held together pretty well.

On the other hand, we can make a lot of improvement. In fact, I think the level of intensity and adrenaline that we brought to the game also contributed to the missed easy shots on goal, the defensive errors (such as Houston & McKenzie taking each other out), and some uncharacteristically poor disposal by the likes of Hartlett and Jonas (kicking out straight down the middle at the end of the quarter). I thought Lycett was well down on what he would normally deliver (though Ladhams' great game did offset that), and Duursma seems to be struggling to get to contest after contest (which is usually one of his strengths).

Our gameplan/gamestyle has been coming together bit by bit, and Saturday was the first time we saw all of it well-executed. The question now is how well we can reproduce that until the end of the season. But at least we now know that we're capable of that level of performance, which would have steamrolled every other team in the comp. We couldn't have said that before.

I'm nervous that we look back at this game like we do beating Geelong in Geelong in 07 when they didn't have Bartel or Ling

Hope not

As long as Dank is nowhere near Richmond it should be fine.

...

Every time I hear Richmond complain about the players they had out it just reminds me that they lack depth this year.
Well boo bloody hoo. Go get another massage and hop back in the hot tub princesses.

Ultimately, Port Adelaide found another level in the final term with the hard-nosed Ollie Wines — who was outstanding all match — dragging his team to a statement-making victory.

Wines was inspirational in the final term, winning eight contested possessions and driving the ball forward as the Power amassed 19 inside 50s to two.

He finished with 28 disposals, 11 tackles and 10 clearances, while former captain Travis Boak was equally influential with 31 possessions and small forward Robbie Gray shone with his trademark creativity and clinical finishing.

Zak Butters buzzed about ferociously and frequently broke through congestion with confidence belying a second-year player, second-gamer Boyd Woodcock caught the eye and mobile ruckman Peter Ladhams — in just his 10th AFL match — again demonstrated his immense potential.

Na against Geelong in 07 they had a myriad of outs that day, pretty much everything went right for us (including playing a full strength side) and we only just fell over the line. And that Geelong side had won 15 in a row and were seen as practically invincible at the time.

On Saturday we also had a fair few good players out, saw a fair few contentious decisions result in Richmond goals, but we controlled the majority of the game from start to finish. Only won by 21 but it was a stronger win than that.

Just the one captured on camera...but where does the bad sportsmanship start - the second one?
For mine, targetting a guys injury is about as classy as staging. Play the ball.
Cheeky slap then playing ball: sporting

Continuous targetting off the ball with intent to injure: unsporting

Did you know that Richmond had 6 premiership players out? I think I saw this somewhere recently.

The utopian reality of that game was, we completely dominated. Only poor goalkicking and some dodgy umpiring kept the margin under 50 points.

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that John Georgiades kicked 8 on debut.

Seven if you count Kevin Bartlett. And why wouldn't you?

Watching all the various highlights from this game, how often do Richmond players push/nudge marking players under the ball. In fairness to the umps they spotted a few, but not having watched Richmond a lot I wonder if this a regular thing they do?
Glad someone else noticed. They have been doing for a couple of seasons now.
They especially do it on a fast break into their forward line when the umpires are front on to the contest rather than side on.
Reiwoldt is the master at it. His favourite trick is to push his opponent into one of his own teammates thus creating a spill

How was the Jack riewoldt hit on Jonas sack not intentional?
Don't know if this has already been said, but the first thing that I thought of when I saw the incident was that he was targeting Tommy in that particular spot because of the wallop in the nuts that he copped in that marking contest last game. Bearing in mind I have no experience with the level of pain or lingering effects of that sort of injury ;) . Whether he had that in mind or not there is no way it was accidental, it didn't happen in the actual collision.
