Autopsy Round 11, 2021: Suns burn Hawks

of course it's more than just that, but we need a base of 24-28 year olds in their prime that we simply don't have

a lot of work to do, but I'll support it every step of the way. As bad as tonight was, how good was seeing a few of the blokes kick their first?

Almost makes it worth it
Yeah for sure, always great to see that. Reeves looks very promising. Have to keep persisting with him.

Really disappointed tonite, even by 2021 standards there was some periods that were terrible.

Ball use was awful, far too often, and by a range of players. Can clearly remember Mitchell, Wingard, Frost, Phillips (twice), each turning the ball over terribly and it immediately cost us goals. Cousins utterly sprayed the football as well. Whole team needs a skills camp.

At times we exerted absolutely no pressure. Suns played much of the game with so much confidence and a clear head, cause we allowed them to. I read on here that training was very physical a couple of weeks ago? Tonite it didnt look to me like the intensity at the contest was there. I heard Hardwick lamenting the Tigers inability to stick tackles and prevent players breaking them and moving the ball to advantage. Thats us nearly every week.

I am not sure if Lewis can make it, but I felt some of the calls on him on the board tonite (that he is not up to it) are a little early - I personally found the performance of a few other players more disappointing, and that he has shown moments this year that are with persevering with. I might be the only one on this board thinking that. But agree if he doesnt get more assertive around the contest, and accept that the footy wont often come to him as he would like it, then he is just wasting his ability and physical traits.

Thought Reeves was rucking better than was being noted, and I am abit excited about him. Moore continues to show promise and hit the scoreboard. Greaves had some nice moments. Scrimshaw alot of class again.

Hopefully, Sicily, Day, DGB (too early?), and a fit Gunston can make a big impact. Otherwise, could be a long couple of years.

Go Hawks.

Nothing wrong with hard truths. Just wish "supporters" remembered that they are talking about fellow human beings, human beings who are actually doing their best, and who will ultimately do far more for the club than those on here to whom I refer.
(Also, a lot of those "hard truths" are moronic drivel,.)

these supporters love the club ....yes they need to be better in how they express themselves at times....... the ultimate stakeholders of this club are the supporters and members ....if tonight was 'their best" then unfortunately its not good enough or acceptable for Hawthorn football club ....That's the hard truth, deliver or step aside

I misspoke, not ashamed of Hawthorn, genuinely ashamed of many supporters.
PS, I will hang in there, there is a 39 on my scarf and there will ne a 59 in 20 years time, guaranteed.
I understand mate, I've blown a gasket and humiliated myself more than twice. You're not alone

Did you watch the game or just read the stat sheet? His disposal efficiency was 4th worst for Hawthorn being pipped by Cousins, Phillips and Morris, who only had three touches.

His disposal was deplorable tonight. Sadly, he might be done. He has been a huge stalwart for Hawthorn. Holds the club record for the highest tackles in a single game, three premierships. But tonight nothing had any penetration. Last week I thought he copped a fair bit of stick unfairly, and the coaches vindicated that giving him coaches' votes, but tonight's game was deplorable. Every kick floated forever before reaching the intended target who, by the time the all arrived, was spoiled.

Yes I saw it and yes his ball use was poor. Also gave away a few frees from memory. Its Shiels - he has always had questionable disposal. Still think it's strange that he is getting singled out saying he is done. At least he was putting in an effort and getting to the ball first in order to use it poorly. Plenty of more talented players were putting in half arse lazy efforts all night - which is probably the reason h got more ball, contested ball and clearances than anyone else.

Enough has been said about individual players performances already but I think we really need to have a good, hard look at our gameplan / style at the moment.

Gold Coast are not a defensively minded team and give you a fair bit of room to move the ball and attack through the middle of the ground but we consistently had the same method of moving the ball from our back line which was as thus;

Step 1. Do a short kick to a player on the back flank.
Step 2. That player then holds the ball for approximately 5 seconds whilst scanning his options
Step 3. Player in question then disregards all options and bangs it down the boundary line to a pack of players whereupon the opposition ruck takes a mark / spoils it over the boundary line

Honestly Gold Coast are not that much better than us and we probably matched them in most facets of the game tonight but they did on occasion move the ball quickly through crisp, attacking kicks and overlap handballs through the middle of the ground which resulted in lead up marks / goals to their forwards.

All our goals came from scrappy, hard, contested work.

I have seen enough games now to say definitely that the way we are playing is a coaching directive.

We are playing to minimise our losses, we are not playing to win.

Its hard to watch to be honest.

If Marie Kondo was looking at our gameplan she would say "This does not spark joy" and toss it in the bin!

Was happy with Moore and Reeves game and although Worpel had a terrible first quarter, thought he battled his way back into the game and played ok. People forget that Worpel has just played over 50 games and is still 22. Got great faith that he can be a top 20 player in the league by the time he gets to 25 and a 100-150 game player. Maybe even top 10. Our midfield would be a lot better if we made him the focus of it.

Does she say there comes a point where you favourite jeans, that have brought you all sorts of success, no longer work? and you should toss them for a better fit?

Worpel has had a relatively solid season considering who he has around him and the team he works with. I think he's improved on last year and is looking like a much stronger/explosive athlete.
I'm really hoping we grab Newcombe in the MSD because I think he will compliment him in the middle quite nicely.

You're damn lucky I'm here.

I posted very much exact same thing after about rd3 only for the cultists to come hard and fast at me.

Thankfully their posting didn't change the narrative and now everyone else can see this and the cultist will leave you alone knowing their attempts at coach deflection are as effective as a Liam Shiels kick.

I'd rather attack with flair and get belted by 100+ points, instead of players playing like footballs version of Bernard Tomic!!!!

I have heard it said from various posters that Clarko builds teams from the back line up (defense first) which has merit but what I am seeing out their this year (and all of last year) is something very different to that. Its one thing to have a strong defense, its another altogether to just concede a game and play to minimise a loss.

What I worry about is the accumulative effect of playing this style is having on team morale.

It can't be much fun rocking up to every game knowing that your coach is trying to minimise losses rather than actually win. As a professional sportsperson I would start to question what is the point?

Our list management was fine in the 3 peat, but before that we always targeted specific traits. Left footers and good kicks at half back, fast tacklers in the forward line etc etc and during the top up we got some mediocre names that contributed precisely because they were affordable and had valuable but often underrated traits, like endurance, tidy disposal and so on. Now this team has no identity. Even the talented young guys we have that I like, they don't really have common traits.

Kinda crazy really, can't remember the last time I'd be fine with any midfielder being traded. Yeah it's true that we are playing conservatively, but Sammy, Hodge and Lewis were visibly and vocally mad as hell when the list was in a poor position and certain guys were happy to get their butts kicked. Lewis would be taking shots at random people in post match interviews every now and then, and guys would get random suspenstions sure but at least they were competitive.
