Rubbish. He just kicked poorly early in the year and we played like s**t. Still leading our goal kicking again.
Most good defenses in the AFL rely on zoning off down the line and setting up to cover the switch by foot. When done well this is lethal, it stops a team working up with precision. Clarko's cluster, where we pushed our defenders up the ground and funneled the ball wide by zoning off the corridor, then squeezing them and forcing the opposition to kick it down the throats of our interceptors is a prime example of modern AFL defenses. To combat this, you need to move the ball fast and aggressively to "overtake" the zoned area. By running the ball by hand 50 metres you push the zone back, and most clubs can't shift back that far that fast. By going all in on handpassing and opening up both sides of the ground we should be able to use our better kicks to hit up forwards on small tick leads or pop it up over the heads of defenders. The aggressive rush usually puts forward a few metres clear goalside and let's them dictate the contest, either by initiating contact or going into the goals alone. The pies do something similar, but rely more on kicking and going wide on the wings. It works for them because they have some brilliant gut runners throughout the whole ground and know how to get it too their best kicks.I'm keen to better understand the handball happy game plan - anyone who understands these things feel free to explain (genuine question!)
There was a moment in the first where his turning circle and time to change direction was very old man.I feel like he's going to have the occassion blinder and look like he's turned back the clock, but be relatively poor for the majority of the games. Really that's just like all great older players coming to the end of their careers.
Shit call, Hawthorn swung that game by force.Hard to judge when the heat is off

fifyWe looked so much lot better once Lycettmeekwas subbed outfor Mackenzie.
I wouldn’t over react. Port are a really good team. We have lost our structures but the challenge will be to try to recover them in the second half. It’s a good challenge for them. If they can restrict port to 150pts for the game it will be a win of sorts. Everything is a learning experience when you’re developing.
Yep, Newcombe has runs on the board and was due a down game (though I was very disappointed). Macdonald was recently taken out of the team for not applying himself defensively. Had an okay game but when the ball is moving that easily there needs to be a bit more pressure. No tackles from Newcombe and MacDonald needs to be addressed.

Put him on the wing where he doesn't get hard contact.
Spot on, don’t like the 2 rucks playing, need the run.We looked so much lot better once meek was subbed out for Mackenzie.
Yeah except we didn't restrict them to 150 points. Bring out the knives.Purses lips in preparation of blowing own trumpet
Mackenzie came on and had an instant impact. We were getting smashed before he was subbed onfify
I hope people today took notice of what Cam Mackenzie brings to this team. Class, composure, and vigor. That diving, run-down tackle was reminiscent of Sam Mitchell's against Richmond. That goal he nearly kicked was also quite similar to what Sam Mitchell did a few times in his career. He's a taller Sam Mitchell. We are so lucky to have him.
