Autopsy Round 13, 2024 : Hawks slay the Giants

We have got to give Sam massive plaudits for his on and off field work.

On field, he’s got us firing, and a particular shout out for the great effort conjuring the 3-pronged ruck of Weddle, Nash, and Chol when Reeves went down.

Then from a game style / off field sense - we are playing with such an exciting flare which is great for supporters, will get us primetime matches in the future, and will attract players to the club. Throw in his messaging about building a side that is preparing for premierships… you just know any player listening to it would have to be interested if they want to play fun footy and win flag(s) in the next decade.

Unreal. After thinking about your post and different perspectives on the Weddle thread where someone said he's best utilised as a utility being put where needed in game, whilst another said just play him in the guts; I had the thought if we play WC in a few years and they've become a decent side what would happen if we played Weddle on Reid? Not a tag person se, more head to head.

Would he negate him and hurt him more the other way or would it be a waste. If they moved Reid forward then he's not going to get any change out of Weddle there.

He's a freak, I genuinely have faith that Sammy will use him in the optimum way, whatever that might be. (I'm leaning to the utility Brishawk suggestion... Burgoyne break glass role).
I met him last year, and said I am excited to watch is career for the Brown and Gold.
He thanked me and said I hope I don’t let you down.
Even though he is on TV playing the highest level, you forget, he’s still a kid.
Imagine what he’s going to be with 100 games under his belt?
As Ned Ryerson said I think this will be Mackenzie’s master stroke in time. For one of the rebuilding teams I have no doubt we are in very good hands at the club.
Mitchell is a breath of fresh air for the whole comp. Clarko like the rest of the coaches would bring players in and have them play robotic to a system. Mitch seems to let them play with what got them to the big stage and you can tell the players are loving it. Which will make us a destination club come the end of the season and years to come.

I think he'd be great as a 75% midfielder (centreman) and a 25% centre half forward.

Mind you he's also more than handy as a back up ruck.

Imagine if you were a free agent and having to choose between StKilda and the Hawks right now.

Be like a diplomatic envoy asking which post they would be prefer, New York or Pyongyang!

Day, Chol, D’Ambrosio, Meek (when he was fit), Amon, Weddle, Dear, Mackenzie, Ginnivan and Frost are all key planks of this football team’s resurgence who were brought in while Mark McKenzie has been the head of list management. He was also involved in the recruitment decisions of Lewis and Worpel when working under Wright. He’s still got Ward, Huss and Watson developing nicely. Mark McKenzie has absolutely nailed the brief ever since this list has been his and for all the crap he’s copped here off season after off season - I for one couldn’t be bloody happier at the job he’s doing. The trading back for Weddle will go down as absolute drafting genius. I hope we have him nailed down with a juicy long contract because I only want him working for us.

(Note that Newcombe isn’t mentioned above as I’ve been informed previously that was an Andy Collins special).
So sleepy 🥱 🥱

Another fantastic game from this team as they start to grow in belief and build confidence and predictability with their team mates.
Highlights today:
Mabior Chol was incredibly influential in the air and on ground level. What he is able to do is absolutely unreal and love the way that he gives our forward line a focal point.
Calsher Dear keeps leaping at everything and his tackle with a minute on the club sums up this young man. He refuses to give up and be beaten.
Connor MacDonald kicks a fantastic goal on the run and hits a beautiful pass to Chol for his second. Has been in the gun from many Hawks fans but Sam loves what he brings and it is clear to see why.
Josh Weddle and Conor Nash were called upon to ruck the last half of the game. Both were absolutely fantastic in what they did - gave a contest in the ruck and then were able to add so much more around the ground and at ground level.
Will Day continues to show why he has the hallmarks of a potential multiple PCM winner - clever with the ball and tough as nails.
Backline of Scrimma and Frosty continue to just get the job done with little fuss - love their combination and their ability to stand up week in and week out.
Massimo D’Ambrosio takes risks with his kicks that others wouldn’t have the confidence to and hits those kicks effortlessly. Love his work rate.

Terrific kid from a great family. From memory on draft night when he got called out to us , he went over to their neighbours . They had a couple of younger kids who looked up to him .
Quality person as well .

Fair comparison, Ross and Kim Jong Un, have a bit in common. Both feed their minions bullshit

It’s easy to praise when the wins stack up but Kane was on the train very early on bc he liked what Mitchell planned to do and his overall approach.

Cornes has believed despite our form slumps and continued to support Mitch.

He's invited to sing the song with the group when we win our next premiership

My favourite commentary moment for the game was when you could feel the awkwardness when Underwood called CJ Chol😂🤦‍♂️

I can’t not love Derm, I’m the only Hawthorn supporter in the family and he is the reason I started barracking for Hawthorn when I was a kid. I have four kids, all Hawthorn members and that man is the reason. Love “The Kid”
I hear you, Dermie remains my all-time favourite Hawthorn person. I hate it when people mock him on here for his commentary...I don't think anyone ever put their body more on the line for the club than him ever, I don't think any Hawthorn fan has the right to bag him at all. Bashed up at 26 with 5 flags, we owe him on the ledger not vice versa. When he had tears in his eyes after the 2014 granny, that said it all for me.
When I first saw Dipper he made me think I want to be on this bloke's side, later in that game Dermie made me think...I want to be this bloke ( funnily enough I never thought I want to be Dipper😝)... The Kid sealed the deal for me going for Hawthorn after Bertie showed the seed.

On your first point CJ-Chol, I think a similar thing happened last week (I'd need to check for sure for fear of being guilty of the same thing) but yeah awks as the kids say😬

Probs for another thread, but;

The 2013 Hawthorn forward line was the best forward line ever assembled.

Breust - Buddy - Puopolo
Gunston - Rough - Cyril

No one can convince me otherwise. The career goal output is insane and the defensive pressure is off the charts.

Love Dermie and also feel uncomfortable with people slagging him off for doing his job.
I find the Underwood hatred ridiculous as well. Just mute the ****ing TV!

Dermie is a yapper, but he does try to give unique insight into the game rather than just shouting WOWEE
You know it's not an either or situation. BT being a worse commentator doesn't make Derm any better.

I love Derm, I love his passion, but he's turned into a Shatner-esque caricature of himself in the commentary box. He'll use 20 oddly spaced out words, and the insight will boil down to "I think it came off the side of his boot".

The only truly unique insight I've gotten from commentary recently has been from newer players. That game where we had Jordan Lewis and Jack Riewoldt on special comments was a pleasure, they gave genuinely interesting commentary on how the game is being played, what the coaches would be looking at, measuring. They can talk about the players out there because they played against them, prepped for them. Those guys, Pav, Bucks (because of his coaching career) and Dale Thomas all give a lot of good insight.

Even guys like Richo are on the side of being out of the game for so long that their insight is limited by it.

Mute the TV?
What an enjoyable experience that would be. They even had fake crowd sounds during Covid.
From all the footy supporters I speak to you are literally the first pro Underwood supporter I’ve come across.

I'd say three blokes will definitely be scratching their head after today's game:.

Craig McRae
Damien Hardwick
Brad Scott
