Autopsy Round 16, 2022: Giants drown the Hawks

I didn't realise Jesse Hogan was still a thing.

Team could use a win. Confidence is visually low whenever things aren't going our way. Younglings are trying hard but not getting a lot from the old hands TBH.

Harry was very good today. Putting together a reasonable block he is. Moore cracked in and worked hard. Nuke hits 'em hard

That Day goal in the first quarter was pure Day highlights reel. Guess he gets suspended though?

Bad luck for Worps.

Had good are modern grounds and drainage though? That place should've looked like a horse paddock today. It was obviously waterlogged, but far from the glue pots of yesteryear.

Bramble looked OK early too, but faded. Nash is back to worrying me, but the other Con(n)or is pleasing. Hopefully Ward will be back soon.
Of course the commentators at both Fox and Seven ignored the Day goal. Remarkable. Anyway, let’s get on with it.

Still trying to work out why they gave Nash another two years.
The other salt in the wound that their Irish Brown highlighted was kicking for goal. He nailed three set shots in terrible conditions. Nash goes to pieces in front of goal. Anyone remember the Freo game a few weeks ago? Usually the Irish imports have pretty good skills. Nash is the exception to that rule.

His Sammy’s love child, Clarko would of dropped him by now, he seems to be a locked every week, he started season well, but his form lately has been poor

We are appraoching the tail end of the season. The energy levels aren't as high when the team is languishing near the bottom. Not saying players aren't trying but the psychology is different. Might be time to experiment with some players and give some more youngsters a hit out.

He deserved a pass for a while because he had been asked to chop-out in the ruck, so he wasn't able to have much consistency. But he's been poor the last few weeks and should be on the block.

Still, I'd rather Nash play than Shiels.

Finn, Ward and DGB need to play out the season. Give a few others a try too.

If Bramble is going to play as a defender then we may as well pick Morris instead. Give him a chance to show what he has got.

Commentary plain awful, hopefully last time I watch a game on 7.
Hawks played dumb footy today, giants always had someone behind the play for the quick kicks and then the giants were able to spread easily because of it. If it wasnt a quick kick, it was a attempted knock on that didnt go our way.
Oh well, like most, not fussed about losing at the moment, as long as we get our premiership this decade to keep the streak going.
Got some good kids coming along (Jiath, day, moore, bramble, ward, butler, mcdonald, newcombe, reeves, blanck(hopefully))
Dont think Koschitzke is the answer up forward to help lewis. Need another big forward and some good hard midfielders.

The fact that JOM was captain again today totally highlights the lack of leadership at the club.
Weren’t they going to rotate the captaincy while McEvoy was injured?
So far we’ve had JOM for a few weeks, then Sicily for a few weeks and it’s gone back to JOM after the bye.
Where are the leaders? Hardwick? Gunston? Breust? Impey? Bueller? Anyone gonna stand up?!

Our work rate has really dipped since the bye, when I hoped it would be the opposite.

Regardless, if it’s workrate, game plan, tactics, it’s all irrelevant if we lack class and leadership, a common thread for 3 years at least. We desperately need match winners, and whilst we’ve got plenty of promise with our kids, we need a lot more.

Add Wingard to that duo and to a lesser extent JOM.

Yeh it's weird watching players like Hawkins sitting 3rd on the Coleman at 33 years old but as soon as our vets hit 30 they seem to fall of the cliff.
Chad Wingard is still 28.

So are Toby Greene and Lachie Neale.

We simply failed to adapt to the conditions.

boom tish
Pretty much it. The difference wasn’t that GWS played better in the wet, it was that they knew what to do in the wet. Hawks tried far too many dry weather plays which would’ve won the game had it been dry. Not too disappointed. We want effort and application, we got it tonight. Experience got GWS over the line. Skills was a late out.

I was at the game and until tonight, I knew what “soulless” meant but couldn’t really attach it to a real-life example. Go to a game at Giants Stadium. Now I know. It wasn’t the ground, it‘s a nice little venue to watch footy at and everything was neat and tidy and accessible but FMD, any chance what little crowd there was could get involved? Even a GWS goal was acknowledged by tepid applause and a slight murmur. Hopefully, it was the weather otherwise you’ve got a serious waste of an AFL licence. A venue where the opposition crowd don’t go and home crowd don’t care.

Agree on both counts, but I am more concerned with the first issue.

Energy levels?

Didn’t seem to affect Essendon yesterday, and to some extent Adelaide and West Coast as well.

It’s as much about team character as anything else. We have dropped our bundle in the last month.

Deserve to finish 16th

We’ve had worse losses against the Giants up there. This one went pretty much as expected based on our current form line.
Yep, as expected for mine.

They have a better midfield and more class across the ground and it ultimately showed, however you couldn’t say that the effort wasn’t there.

We simply couldn’t get any reward for effort because lack the class forward of the ball, and don’t run deep enough in the middle.

I reckon we were outplayed plain and simple. They set up better for the conditions to control the territory and got the ball in the hands of their longest and best kicks.

But - conditions tailor made for O’Meara, newk, Mitchell, Nash, shiels thru the middle. Only Mitchell could justifiably be happy with his game (haters will still hate) and nash and shiels were really poor. I love Liam and was happy when i saw him warming up given the type of game it was but just didn’t give us anything of substance.

Think Sicily, reeves, hardwick and Morrison were good. Breust was clean but not enough. Gunston very poor.

Scrimshaw was one I was really disappointed in. He has a long boot and is generally hard at it. Thought he was ordinary today and has been inconsistent all year.

But a more seasoned team (or their seasoned players more to the point) killed us today with smarter more impactful football.

Need to win the next two to salvage more of the hope.

We didn’t drop our bundle today.

Pick 2 is looming actually.
Crows at Marvel will have Tex putting our defence to the sword and NicNat back and Eagles are far more settled in last few weeks.
Can’t see us beating either Crows or Eagles on current form.
And a fair chance get Norf with a new coach that week
