Autopsy Round 17, 2024 : Hawks fall in a hole in Geelong

At the end of the day effort is non-negotiable.

Losing the disposal count and tackles is bad.

A lot of blame on the mids tbh. Had first hands so the mids would start to spread, but then fkd it up leaving the other mids defensively exposed once the scats had possession.

Breust and Gunston can't start in the 22 together. Breust can be sub.

Not bringing a tall in for Sicily was stupid selection. Seamus has lost his defensive edge.

Think it is Geelong's home game for Easter Monday so thankfully we won't have to travel to that shit hole of a stadium until 2026.

Frustrating, disappointing, I really had high hopes for this game.

Everything we'd been doing well for the past couple of months we were poor in. Our ball use was horrible, the fumbles cost us and our Defence looked all at sea.

Some really poor performances today, how we perform next week will tell us a lot about where we're at. Do you fall in a heap from here? Or was this just a blip on our way up this season.

I don't think anyone would have made a difference tonight but Sicily is so important to our side.

horrible pant-shitting performance on the whole. We didn’t turn up with required intensity and our skill level was horrible all day

This was on the mainstays, not the fringe players.

I would love the opportunity to play them again on the MCG this year. Let’s hope we get the opportunity

Ok, so the lid stays on for another week. We have a better understanding of where we are now and know we need to get better.

Progress isn’t always linear.

Was always going to be tough on the back of a Perth trip last week with Sic and Ginni both out. Some puzzling umpiring - Mitch lewis comes off with blood streaming from his head in a marking contest, no free. Nest passage of play a fingernail over the shoulder of the Geelong player and a high free paid…

Smashed in every facet of the game.. we looked eerily similar to 1-7 Hawthorn again.
Massive reality check - we were due for a down game… of course it comes against these pricks- they always bring their best against us and today was no exception- it was game over at quarter time…

Was hoping we’d push them off the cliff but instead they pushed Bruest and Gunston… Put a real dint on our finals hopes with the percentage hit aswell… Some really awful moments from players like CJ + Amon when the heat was on.. Newcombe + Nash were back to the piss poor form we saw in the 1st few rounds… we’ll learn from it… just wasn’t our night… Lewis copping an injury was salt in the wounds 😔

Let’s hope we never play at their shithole of a venue again- crime against humanity that they still allow AFL to be played down there

All rather gormless and pathetic.

We were 'off' from the first minute...our trademark 'numbers and pressure' wilted like warm lettuce.

There is some fragility there.

Just put it down to a learning experience. That was a good game for the team from that perspective. The younger players will now know what its like to compete at that level. Team and coaches will be better for it. The gap isn't as big as the scoreboard indicates. We have as much talent as they do, if not more. Much of it is in the head and many players went back to some bad habits from early in the year. That needs to be overcome. Also, they ran out of gas in the last quarter which added to the gap in the score. The question now is how well they learn and how they respond going forward.

POP!

was fun while it lasted.

Can we bounce next week?
Or is that us for the year.
This is one I expected us to drop.

Can still make it, but Carlton (like Geelong) can play at a higher level than us. So we really need to upset Fremantle next week.

KermitJagger recently took issue with my claim that one of several factors in our improved run of 7-1, was we had played inferior sides in the past 2 months and got our game style going as a result.

Geelong are still a better side than most, and we couldn’t get anything going tonight. Hence they just belted us by 51 points.

Wasn't expecting a win but that was a disappointing loss. Kicking was abysmal. So many ineffective tackles where we don't pin an arm and they get an easy handball away, poor technique.

Absolutely not the reason we lost but umpiring was shit as well.

Worps and Moorey tried hard. Wiz tackled well. A day to forgot for most of the boys.

Cats played us like a fiddle. They knew exactly how we wanted to play with switch kicking + spread and with the dimensions of GHMBA they easily to stopped that from happening. The part of our game that was inexcusable was the dinky handballs and ground ball gets. It's one of those games that you throw in ocean and forget about. Need to bounce back next week.

Finally I really hope everyone in here puts thought into their posts before they come here emotionally to do so. Bumps with a grin and all that.

From the West Coast game thread ☝️
We got soft.

Need to go back to hunting the contest.
I said in the game day thread, we should have it chiselled into our contract that we never play west coast again. This is their fault.

S.Mitchell should be dropped not to be selected again until he can show he’s not scared afterall . A good reality check we need Battle more than anyone else we’re chasing I think .

Some of the damage done at match committee.

Weddle is NOT a lock down defender.
Put him on a wing and let him run.

Amon is wasted down back, and hardly defends anyway.
Put him half forward.

Breust and Gunston can’t keep up with the pace.
By all means, pick one and make him sub.
The other has to play for BH.
