Autopsy Round 17, 2024 : Hawks fall in a hole in Geelong

Also people wondering why we are trying to sign both Perryman and Battle - tonight’s game is why. We need more defensive stocks. We can’t fall to pieces just because Sicily is out.

Decent clip on the chin there . Shame our shocker came against them.
Thought they were well planned got us on the back foot early and we never recovered .

In the mid-long term I'm not concerned with the loss . We have shown ability to learn and reality is they are a contender still , for now .

Will we hit a flat patch now or rebound , great test for the team and I can't wait to see how it goes .
But a hard watch all the same

Never in it, however, a perfect storm.

Injury, 6 day break, the softest win ever, long winning streak, media street for a bunch of young players, rest of the media blowing wind up their arses, that shit ground and the Cats revitalised by the Hawkins injury, especially Cameron who can finally get the space he thrives in.

All added up to what we saw.

Move on to Freo in Tassie and learn from it.

Some of that was due to the tight ground and lack of space. A lot was due to us just not turning up and not being on.

It happens

Disappointing but not surprising

Cats smashed them right from the first bounce - the pressure was immense and the boys just weren’t ready for it - spent the entire game chasing cat tails

Im also going to give them the benefit of the doubt in that a trip away, a soft win and then a trip down the Highway to the flat track bullies was never going to end well - the test is who turns up next week

Hopefully Will and Mitch are okay - we don’t have the depth but if it’s season over then maybe test Scaife if his been going ok

Unfortunately our skills were poor today. Geelong are great at punishing turnovers on their ground. They squeeze and restrict the space, and we played right into their hands.
Sicily's absence was very noticeable. Playing both Breust and Gunston at the same time was a mistake, as neither offered defensive pressure. Breust should only be used as a Sub nowadays.

The Lewis incident just added insult to injury. He will miss next week due to concussion, but hopefully he hasn't sustained any damage to his left knee.

Overall a tough watch for Hawks fans, but the loss will reinforce that we need to get better. On to next week.

We were quite literally never in the game. From the first bounce we were chasing tail. We struggled to get our hands on the ball and were fumbly when we did. The cats were cleaner and looked like they were running training drills at times.

We finally got a run on happening in the 3rd and looked like we could get within 2 or 3 goals before 3/4 time. That all came to a crashing halt when Amon turned it over at half back with an absolute shocking kick which took the wind out of our sails.

That should be the last time we see Breust & Gunners in the same team unless it's for a farewell game. We can carry one on a good day but not both and definitely not with Lewis in the side. Our forward line had a completely different dynamic coz it wad so slow and they rebounded it so easily.

Our bacjlibe struggled but some of the delivery by the cats was centimetre perfect because there was no pressure up the ground.

A lot to work on for a lot of guys that may have been drinking their own bathwater after a stretch of good games.
Agree about Lewis, gunston and breust, all don't provide much pressure or much defensively. Think it's gotta be chol, dear and either gunston or Lewis. Breust as the sub maybe but not in the 22.

When things aren't going well you just want players to show intent with their tackling.
Day and Wiz brought it. Probably our 2 lightest players. Showed our big guys up.

Dylan Moore AA lock or are we just biased?

. Gunston and Breust look cooked. Less than 10 possesions between them and no influence
. Watson did nothing. Still can't kick more than 30m when he occasionally gets one
. Missed Sicily heaps although it wouldn't have changed the L
. Moore and Worpel can hold their heads high
. Fumbled a lot today as a team
. Forgot how much they get favoured by the umps down there
. Would prefer Weddle playing a loose role. He's an ok defender but much. Etter off the leash. Cameron could have had 10 today's
. Seamus Mitchell never again. Don't know what he adds exactly but he turns it over 50% of the time at least.

Let's hope Lewis is ok

Feel like the boys and some supporters got a reality check today to be honest.

The lack of space showed how slow of foot and hand Gunston and Bruest are. Can’t carry them into next season.

Luckily we are back in the wide expanses of York Park next week. Dear back for Lewis and maybe Serong in for Mitchell, Bruest is sub only now.

Lewis. Ginni and Sic back for the Pies.

That's what is killing me. Absolute soft effort. Just no excuse for it.

We played poorly. Cats to their credit played at their best.

We could not handle the pressure and fumbled all day.

Pressure led to us turning the ball over all day.

We simply were not in the contest from the beginning, we were comprehensively beaten today and deservedly so.

Some players has moments to forget - Mitchell, Jiath, Amon.

The Cats played at their best, we played at our worst.

The lesson today was about mindset and pressure, we were out worked and spooked from beginning and the majority meekly accepted this was not our day.

This was a bad day at the office, a reality check for our players and fans. We didn't give a yelp.

We are 8-8, a 50 50 side and lower mid table. This is apt for our position and realistically where we are at.

I defer to next week and look forward to seeing what this side is made of as they have shown an ability to learn quickly from big lessons (think Port game) and trust Mitchell who says we are off the best sides in the competition will make the necessary adjustments moving forward.

Beat Freo next week and keep the ride going for season 2024.

Chin up, there is a game next week folks.

Got pantsed today big time, but all you can do is learn and adapt. We are rebuilding and when we are on we are quality, definitely got some good bones to build a premiership side on.

Can we never play a game at that pathetic tinpot stadium again. I particularly enjoyed the lines for food that did not remotely move the entirety of the half time break - and the mobile coverage that resembled something from over a decade ago. Between that and the staff who didn’t know how the seating worked - great job all round you pathetic hick town.
Not to mention the shite music played after every Cats goal

Absolutely bullied us from the very first second/first bounce and that was about it in a nutshell.

Team balance is a bit off - too many mid sized players.

Coaching was a bit off too. When you have Amon having to defend 1 on 1 you know you are in all sorts of trouble. If that guy is not playing off his man for the quick receive and outlet kick then he is a liability down there.

The outs obviously hurt us this week, not just for team continuity.

Bruest should only be a sub from here on. Seamus, Impey & Amon down back ? That doesn’t work. Serong should’ve come in for Sicily, like for like. A lot to learn for everyone and we are still developing , def not the 2nd best side in the comp 😅.

Really hope Dear can come back in next week.

Moore, Scrim, Worps, Impey can all hold their heads up as our best tonight. The rest… well they were just beaten up by the schoolyard bully 2 grades above them.

Was always going to drop one soon, disappointed it was this, against that mob, and that dump of a venue.

Bruest & Gunston never play in the same side again, and I think both are tapped on the shoulder in a few weeks. Great servants

We are still 24 months off genuine contention, this group needs more time together. Think we need the top 6 pick more than we need to finish 8th tbh.
