Autopsy Round 2, 2022: Hawks disconnect the power

Sam Mitchell has us playing almost the exact same game plan that took us to the pinnacle. The era he was in the drivers seat for, on the field.

It's a simple back to the future move.

How Hawthorn keeps winning despite losing contested battle

The above article could have been written based off last night.

Get smashed in contested ball and clearance, soak up entries with interceptors and then sling shot with speed the other way.

It only becomes more deadly when Day, Impey and Bramble return too.

The question that keeps running around in my head is:

Where would we be today if Sicily and Gunston had played last season?

Some thoughts:
  • Clarko would still be coaching.
  • We probably wouldn't have Harvey and/or Mitchell at the club.
  • Brockman would have developed more under Gunston's tutorage.
  • CJ probably wouldn't be as developed as we have seen.
  • We wouldn't have Ward AND MacDonald.
  • Shiels probably would have played last night.
Lots of hypotheticals, but this is a real sliding doors scenario.

We bank the four points and move on

... Also DGB, Jiath, Scrimshaw, Newcombe, Ward, McDonald, Lewis, Moore, Morrison our future is the brightest in the comp now

We did this losing Wingard at half time. And we still have Day, Bramble and Impey to come back in

Finally.. Hinkley, Kochie, Vandstone and especially little Kane can all eat a big bag with ALL of the dicks. All of them

Cornes said the Hawks will finish bottom…by a long way! Seriously how does that bloke have a job? That was not the signal from last half of last year and he has failed to do his research on just how good Mitch is as a coach.

Yes Sam was fully invested in the plan back then. Hell make changes, and is getting input from his new coaching panel, but he’s not dumb to throw ot the baby with the bathwater

No one is mentioning our miserly defence. Which goes back further than 2 games by the way

Newcombe's judgement of an opponent's closing speed is elite. I know there isn't a specific stat for this, but the number of times he he gets the kick away and is tackled within a quarter of a second is amazing. Compared with Worple getting run down last week. (nothing on Worple here, just that Duke has a sixth sense.)

I'll say again, this style of game, despite being great to watch, puts enormous heat on the oppo. We're always looking to score and get into dangerous positions. Our ball movement is always asking questions of the oppo defence. We can easily look to reply to a goal, rather than go into our shell.

It's the modern game. And we are playing it as well as anyone.

Strap in for the ride.
Yep. It also helps we have two of the best and most efficient forwards in the league in Gunston and Breust. Give them time and space and they score goals. Lewis, Moore, chad are also generally very effective in making most of limited opps. Lewis is a handful one out and a great set shot.

Our midfield is getting beaten in clearances but by adding rotations our pressure seems a lot higher and we are running forward far harder than ever. As a group we have some great endurance runners which we are exploiting as eventually someone finds space and we’re away. There’s also a lot of ball movement by hand which is taking pressure off our footskills (more kicks by guys in space).

Whether we can keep this up is another thing. The better teams defend well against transition footy which led to the dees stoppages/clearence style.

Love the youth that Mitchell is playing and geez the 2 kids we took in last years draft look pretty good for 1st year players.

I want to keep grounded as Port was horrible last night, we kicked a freakish 13.0 from set shots but, the ball transition ball movement from backline to the forward part of the ground was the best I've seen in years.

I hope Mitch Lewis can have a very consistent season and own that spot.

Nash and Newcombe big bodies are very important for midfield dynamic. We might not be winning the clearances but we aren't allowing those easy deep clearances like recent years.

Sicily and Gunston back has been huge, didn't expect Gunston to be moving like he never had 2 back surgeries.

Still think we'll go through some struggles like most young sides do, especially when we lose some confidence. But we can see a style that is trying to be implemented, a style that stands up and a real youth movement and direction for the future. Delighted to see Sammy rack up some early wins the whole " Hawks are idiots for getting rid if clarko " mantra doesn't become dominant in the media.

Where's the port autopsy thread?
It’s called goodbye season 2022.
They want Clarkson thinking that will fix midfielders all getting sucked into contest and correct the over defensive focus
I didn’t have the heart or guts to point out that’s what we had been complaining about with Clarkson in his final years

The Mitchell succession was planned and executed years out. It was always going to be a bit awkward playing out.

Josh 'Warrior' Ward for rising star... the kid is going to be an absolute legend of this footy club.

An incredible win and a noticeable and new style is emerging under Sam.

The stats last night do not show a 64-point victory yet somehow, here we are. we have broken the mould! Hinkley was dumbfounded, how do you even play against that?

It's 2022. You could have 100 pressure acts but thanks to fantasy footy, unless you are getting the easily inflated stats, noone cares

I care, and apparently so does the outcome of football games!

How smug is kennett feeling right now

On SM-G973F using BigFooty.com mobile app
Of course he'd feel smug. He would be rewriting in his head how it all played out to make him the messiah. Let's not forget how unprofessional he was in handling Clarkson's departure and dragging the club through the mud.

Let’s not forget it was Clarko who set it all in motion and put his position on the line for the club when it was apparent that Collingwood wanted Sam. The biggest factor in Sam now being coach is the one who encouraged him to get his coaching credentials as a player, the one who encouraged Sam to go to West Coast to experience another club’s culture, the one who got Sam back to the club as soon as he could and when other Vic clubs wanted him and the one who encouraged Sam to take on Box Hill as part of his apprenticeship. None of those people were Jeff ****ing Kennett.

You forgot to add Ceglar & O'Brien would still be in the team :straining: ... and probably keeping out Lewis .
