Round 2 The Sydney Swans vs The Hawthorn Hawks

AH! My man Meredith! I said all along it would not take much footy for him to get the call up. I am very confident this kid will make it.
Surely as El Presidente of the Meredith fan club, you'll have to turn up on Saturday?

VERY happy Meredith is getting a go. First debutant for the year! Wow, Round 2! The Swans generally wait a bit more than that. Except last year I guess with Bird in Round 1.

But anyway, VERY happy for him and glad the Swans are doing the right thing. When we complain how so much youth is injured, at least use what you've got. ;)

i would, but unfortunately my girlfriend has stupid friends who decide to have their 21sts on the night of swans matches

Get your priorities right Mase!!!

I'll be at the reserves game.. maybe later. Like around 5:30? I've got so much Uni work.. really hard to find time to watch the ressies game! I'll try my best.

I AM SO CUT THAT BUCHANAN GOT OMITTED FROM THE TEAM!!! Now I can't take out my banner (which has been in hiding since last year!).

In saying that, in a less subjective view, I am happy we're injecting in some youth. Good luck to Meredith. Haven't seen much of him playing in the reserves due to injury but Roos seems pretty pleased about how he played last week.

One of the gayest surnames, but can someone give me some details on this kid's football qualities etc? (Yes, football qualities, no roomie stuff lol) Is he tiny or like Moore?

A posititve move.

Despite not throwing the baby out with the bath water you couldn't just let the 2 points in a half go ignored at the selection table.

We lacked drive through the midfield and Buchanan had no impact.

He wasn't alone but his carry over goodwill points were certainly lower than everyone else.

What i saw of Meredith during the pre season I liked, fought for his possessions and was prepared to carry the ball if it was appropriate.

Good luck Brett.

I don't want to give up on Barlow as a natural footballer he beats so many of our list.

He's got to go to Canberra and stand tall.

Brett would have played last year if his shoulder didnt cause him problems
had his operation the day before the ressie grand final probs the best time 2 do it as i think he had a full pre season...look good both times i have seen him eps in the ressies scratch match...hes a quick kid and good kick but hopefully wont crack under pressure...oh and so u guys know...this roomie says NO DEAL to the looks

Yes, and one very little-reported fact is that he's the youngest grandson of the famous Burgess Meredith, who of course was The Penguin in the long-running Batman TV series.

Well, probably.

Some matchups:

C.Bolton v Franklin - Not as straightforward as it appears, Roos appears to have a predilection for using Bolton to plug holes in the defence as opposed to playing on the best forward. LRT might get the first crack again although I would assume that Bolton will end up on Franklin. Clarkson has signalled in the preseason that Franklin may find himself in the midfield, and I have no qualms having Bolton follow him there.
LRT v Roughead - I'm not liking this matchup at all, but there are no other options for LRT to play on if Bolton ends up on Franklin. It was an encouraging game from LRT last week, but he'll be under the pump a lot more this week.
Mattner v Williams - Williams, former leading goalkicker at the Hawks, is deceptively strong in addition to his quickness. Mattner will have the pace and physical presence to counter the lively West Australian.
Bevan v Rioli - Rioli is a tackling machine, generates great defensive pressure but can also a kick a goal or two. The Swans will require Bevan's hardness and bravery down back to assist Bolton and LRT against the Hawks forwards.
Malceski v Stokes - The Swans will attempt to free up Malceski, choosing to play him on the least threatening forward.

Richards will play the exact same role he did last week, as the spare man in defence cutting across to block Franklin and Roughead's space.

Kirk v Mitchell - One of the worst games from Kirk last week, he's unlikely to play two in a row. He'll need to be at his best to curb the Mitchell who had 34 touches in a losing side.
Goodes v Sewell - Sewell will play a run-with role on Goodes in the midfield, but is unlikely to follow him should Goodes move to the forward line.
J.Bolton v Bateman - Bateman is a hard runner, with neat skills and a tough nut attitude. While ostensibly Hawthorn's choice to play Bateman on Bolton, Jude must follow Bateman closely as he loves to run forward and kick a goal.
Shaw v Young - Young is Hawthorn's very underrated linkman who loves to run and carry as well as kick long into forward line. Shaw had a promising start to his Swans career with his pace a noticeable asset to the Swans midfield.
McVeigh/Jack/Ablett v Kennedy/Morton/Whitecross

Hall v Murphy - I'll admit I'm not sure of the Hawks defence with both Croad and Gilham out. While Campbell has played on him in the past, he'll be required in the ruck so either Murphy or Brown will have to take on Hall.
ROK v Guerra - Guerra is the likely opponent due to his physical style of play to combat the contested marking skills of ROK.
Grundy v Birchall - Birchall is deceptively tall and will have to take Grundy due to a lack of options. Grundy must work hard off the ball and prevent Birchall's influence off the half back flank. The young Schoenmakers is the other option for Clarkson.
Moore v Hodge - A defensive forward role here for Moore, not an easy task as Hodge is not afraid of leaving his man and helping out his fellow defenders. Moore must be careful not to lead into Hall and ROK's space.

Expect Meredith to spend a lot of time up forward, very similar to the role MOD performed against Adelaide last year. This is due to a lack of forwards and a logjam of midfielders in the Swans side. His instructions will be to work hard off the ball, pressure the Hawks defenders relentlessly and perhaps crumb a goal or two from spilt ball.
