Wise wise wordsPhew! It seems like I've stumbled into the rocket surgery convention... So many here who watch the game, but don't see the game. After a weekend of seeing both Footscray and Westerb Bulldogs play, I am relieved to be able to report that the sky is definitely not falling.
Yesterday at Geelong, the Footscray boys lost a winnable game, but there were some positives to take from of it. The Bont is going to be a very good player. So is Josh Prudden. Tom Williams is very close to putting it all together in the forward line and Tom Campbell playing VFL is like a man playing boys. Ayce was playing above the level, but just didn't have the authority of an AFL player who has 'gone back'. My boy Fletch struggled in the backline after being mainly forward pre-season but still managed to show his class on occasion. Michael Talia was lacklustre, but Mitch Honeychurch was firey until his tank ran dry in the second half. Tutty was explosive at times but decision-making let him down. Big Jack contested all day and took some good grabs. The Rat was in and under, especially early. Goodesy worked like a man possessed but skills let him down again. Greeny has lots of ticker but just isn't big enough to play a role. The jury is still out on Matt Fuller but he didn't show anything that even recommended him for VFL let alone AFL.
Today was a disappointing result but another step on the journey. The 'conventioneers' will tell you that our effort was piss poor, we were unfit, that were just crap, etc. They didn't see the game that I saw. A week after the hardest journey in footy to a 35 degree hell hole, we did a pretty good job against a highly-touted opposition hell-bent on making amends for their ignominious start to the season. Contested footy! Yes! Liam Picken was outstanding. So was Lukey D. And Jack Macrae. Dale. Murph. Roughy. Jongy, especially early. Koby - most of the time. Adam Cooney, especially early. Jake Stringer (Phar Lap's heart). Hunter!!!!!! Big Stew worked really hard but was not rewarded; he is a quality unit and will click soon. Some of these boys have played very few games and have come off a huge trip to the west (to the posters who think it's just about sitting in a plane, please go back to the convention, Tony Dean is about to give his keynote address). If you can't see progression in the way we're playing and the things that are improving, maybe Dannnnnnn could reel off a few thousand words and a bunch of stats for you. For me, it's plain to see out on the ground, like it was today, and like it almost was yesterday (and that is really exciting because you can see similarities in the way we're playing at both levels).
When we have 50+ plus games into the likes of Hunter, Hrovat, Stringer, Macrae, Campbell, Dickson, JJ, Bontimpelli, Prudden, Jong and co, the mistakes and misjudgements we saw today will be much fewer and farther between. In the meantime, try to see the whole game instead of just following the ball and glancing at the scoreboard. It's much more fun (except when you come home and log on to BF).
PS Higgo!!!! Jeez, it's good to have him back. I can't be bothered going back to see who the twerp was who ripped into him. Whoever you are, say three Hail Marys, go straight bed without any supper, and don't let it happen again.
