O

Let's be honest I did watch and was impressed with a few things late last year but I expected immediate progression again this year. That doesn't mean wins but no one can tell me honestly they have been happy with the first 2 weeks.

Everyone talks about the progression they see well why not the negatives? Not allowed to coz that demeans our passion?

I see more regression than progression and I'm honestly astounded people are still 100% sure bout this bloke but as I said they are entitled to.

I pray you blokes can laugh on my face when he takes us to finals but I HONESTLY. Believe we won't even do that let alone get is to challenge

Last week very poor this week while still quite poor I thought we had more endeavour. Hopefully by 2015 will aim for finals.

nah i remember our classy ball movement and coast to coast transition coupled with our ability to play a short offensive structure successfully over 5 years With a lack of defense so if we couldn't convert the ball pinged out of our 50 straight in for a goal the other end.
i remember kicking cricket scores and a coach who coached to our strengths I remember a coach who was desperate to get a full forward and got one a year too late in BArry Hall
i remember so called footy experts and commentators marveling at how we kept winning when not having a key forward gorilla and a list with holes being robbed by a stkilda poser (who likes taking photos of himself holding his willy) robbing us of a GF shot Yes, they are all marveling at how quick Richmond is, but they haven't won a final yet!!!! No defensive pressure.
I remember more wins than loses under the old gameplan, i remember having a coach with balls who demanded respect A game plan that was great in the home and away games, but in the tough finals footy our lack of defensive pressure hurt us against the best teams, Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda.
and one who empowered his players on the field to play to the fullest of their abilities He was criticized for picking the same players week after week regardless of how good or how poor their performance was, this meant out young kids never got the opportunity to develop and has lead to the mess we are in with no succession planning for when players retire.

How u can even begin to compare eade to Bmac is beyond me
are u twelve years old did u start watching football when u were 10?
I don't appreciate your rudeness!!

For god sake you are living in the past, we don't have half of the 2009 team left on the list. Lake, Johno, Cross, Gilbee, Shaggy, Harbrow, Ward, Hudson, Eagleton are all gone, and we have young players in their place learning the ropes.

Can you remember back before 2009, from around 2000 on wards, when we lost the 1997 team, with the likes of Jose Romero, Libba, Leon Cameron, Monty, Chris Grant, Croft, Scott West, Luke Darcy, what a mess we were in, and how supporters like you screamed and gnashed your teeth, it took until 2006, before we made the finals again and we had another good team, that the core were recruited in 1999 Gia, Murphy, Hahn, Gilbee, Hargrave, 2000, we got Cross and McMahon, 2001 Lake. We didn't make the finals until 2006 - that's right 7 years after we recruited the core group. You need to give Macca AND these young players some time, to learn the game and get their fitness, and skill levels up. I think that we are well ahead of the last group, we only started rebuilding at the end of the 2011 season, and the second half of last year showed us we are on the way, but it doesn't happen overnight!!!!!

For all those willing to hold up Eade as a successful recent coach, he walked in and took over a group ready to take the next step. His first year was 2005, and the driving forces behind the 08-09-10 preliminary final appearances were drafted in 1999 - Murphy, Giansiracusa, Gilbee, Hahn, Hargrave - going back further, Johnson, and so on.
McCartney's taken over a basket case with an aging list and overseen an enormous player turnover, and has them playing a completely different brand of football. They're still growing into it. The players for this team have Geelong written all over it, in that there's so much understated class, as we've seen with Enright and Corey, for example. We don't have 'star' players in the mould of Franklin, where they're riding on the coat-tails of old glories and kick a freak goal from time to time - our boys will be stars for their class, fearless approach and ruthless consistency.
Their bodies just aren't quite there yet. It has been noted for some time now, we're playing a tough, hard brand that is going to wear them down and result in us running out of legs until they're used to it.
This is, without a shadow of a doubt, McCartney's list and style, and you can see it's going to pay serious dividends. We've seen so many marked improvements in many of our boys and saw some fantastic team efforts towards the end of 2013, so he deserves some faith, and in the long run, the chance to take his team all the way. It's still very, very early. As they say, it's a long way to the top.

Maybe I'm a little different to some here. I see this year as our next 2005. Young side who have just come off two horrible years of rebuilding. We'll have good weeks and bad weeks but in the end it'll be a massive rollercoaster of a season where we'll show our potential and win way more than expected but probably just fall short of finals. Next year we'll start our run.

Yebiga is very pleased with a number of aspects following the first 2 rounds.
For one thing, I believe Higgins has actually learnt to be a defender! To be honest, I thought Bmac was pushing the proverbial with this idea, but Shaun has improved his defensive ability significantly. He never liked body contact but is now mixing it with the best of them. Kudos to him and the coaches.

How good is hunter going to be? Yebiga is calling it now, he will be the best of the 2012 crop of recruits.

Stevens continues to improve, he stuffs up but he works so hard to compensate and is a great example to the whole team.

Today's game style did not suit Macrae but he put in another solid performance

Picken and Morris were sensational today

To the hysterical naysayers, I think supporters forget how truly terrible we have been over much of the last 2 years. We have improved considerably. Nice goal there between stringer and Macrae in the 4th Q

NOW THE BAD STUFF
We will not beat anyone until we have a genuine second ruckman come forward play. For those defending the I omission of Campbell or Cordy, I say look at Norths Curry. I say this is idiotic. If Campbell played, one of Thompson or Hansen is forced to cover him. It does not matter whether Campbell is even effective.

SECONDLY
We need to play another tall defender for the same reason we need another tall forward. Wood competing with Black today was idiotic. Morris is near the end of his career. There is simply no justification for not playing one of Talia, Austin, Williams, Redpath or fletch. None, except pure pigheadedness.

I fear we have a great developer of youth and recruitment in our current coach. But increasingly, it seems some of the basics of the game at this level are evading his understanding. The coast to coast goal is becoming way to routine against us. Similarly, we have now creativity at kickouts from our end.

I want us to keep Bmac but as patronising as it sounds, he is on a steep learning curve. Crameri is no centre half forward, his best football is deep, because his burst speed is elite. He is right now confused as to his role in this team.

The current team set up is at odds with the direction we were headed last year and I don't like it at all.

No but for real, game was a lot better in person than it sounds like it was on TV. I think a lot of the criticism levelled at players for not giving enough or not looking interested is completely unfair, they looked like they gave it everything and were out on their feet by the end.

I go on about this from time to time, but TV coverage isn't great. I'd LOVE the option with digital or internet to have a static wide shot from from both ends and also a one in the middle. TV doesn't even tell half the story. In fact, I've come to the conclusion that sometimes tight shots are used on purpose so the play can't be read properly. Manufactured tension, which I find leads to a negative view of my team if they appear to be playing poorly. I don't feel half as bad if can see from the stands what they are trying to set up, even when we aren't winning, or what a certain player might be doing off the ball. Matthew Boyd is the player I find who suffers most from this.

Went off on a bit of a tangent there, but as someone who physically can't get to the game, it pisses me off :)

Have been informed some of our supporters decided to stand around the player race and abuse the boys on their way down to the rooms.
If any of you that participated are reading this, PULL YOUR HEADS IN!
Have some loyalty and have some SENSE, for the love of ****. How can you call yourself a supporter of this club if you want to crowd around defeated young men and abuse them for throwing everything they had at it and coming off second best against a side expected to finish well inside the 8, far and away above us. Yes, mistakes were made. Did all make mistakes? Did any one player cost us the game?
Seriously. Leave the Dees supporters to participate in that crap. That's just not Footscray. We are better than that.

If this actually happened. Apparently not. Disgusting. I'm not one for overreactions but any supporter who does that to a bunch of players who worked as hard as they did, should have their memberships revoked. No place for that.

I normally over react in the heat of the moment, but after I have a couple of hours to think about the game I am fine
I was massively cranky after the game and even crankier with my train deliberately late ,holding up at the platform so it was packed to the brim and still people throw their arms up when they run to the train bah

sad times still.

what makes me angry:

- just a serious lack of class.

- once again too easy is the opposition taking the ball away with numbers from our defence in general play. We lock it in if we get it forward from a stoppage though. How long have we had to work at it though?

- what's going on with our group's fitness? it better have been gastro because this shouldn't be happening anymore.

what was pretty good:

- despite plenty of good looks to protect our back six held up very well.

- Koby, Macrae and Hunter again playing good footy.

- After whacking him last week it would be remiss of me not to mention that Jakey was well and truly in this game. He was a silly umpire away from a respectable 2.2 and he is making a contest probably better than the other two targets we have. Obviously he's getting exposed for fitness but he does seem determined to be a very good afl player. Wasn't as in games last year if that makes sense.

other things of note:

- Minno was pretty well beaten i thought and needs to work into some form.

- Jonesy actually looked likely and a bit fitter and smarter in this game. He could've got some nice delivery and hurt the roos. Sloppy with ball in hand though on this occasion.

- Easton Wood is probably a bit of an unfair whipping boy. Played ok for mine and is the age we need to come on and be a rock in defence and lock down on his men

Tend to agree. We might see a jump in form this season, but even at this stage there is capacity for some stinkers. 2007 was a horror season, well off what we knew we could deliver. I'm not certain of what this crop can deliver yet, but was hoping this year we'd see glimpses of a team that has winners across the park.

Pretty disappointed with the result last night, Just some thoughts our skills were shocking yesterday, even our supposed better kickers were missing kicks we should hit we seriously need to get better users into the team, We really miss Jarrad Grant obviously our late season form was a result of him, believe we went into the match one tall short at either end again. Also saw so alarming non awareness from players and also so selfish football at time that need to be fixed asap.

To be honest I was one who looked at the fixture and thought we may be 0-3 but just the seemingly lack of composer and skill is what worries me we seem to have taken a step back not forward and so have a handful of our players.

Positives:
Our pressure we applied for the majority of the match was really good and didn't allow the coast to coast from kick ins like we had been.

Lifted in the contested ball from last week and tackled fairly strongly.

Negatives:
Kicking and skill level well below what is acceptable work hard to create an opening or switch of play and butcher the ball.

Forward 50 entries just give our forwards no chance, i see people bagging jones and crameri but it must frustrate them that when they do lead the ball goes over their head or lands miles in front of them would not be giving them any confidence it presenting for the ball.

Worries:
When Murph retires who is actually going to be able to kick in our team.

Libba taken a step back?

A 6 day break coming up against a team that's had 9 days

I think some people need to realize just how many players we've turned over since Macca took over. We had an absolutely disgusting list in 2011 (saved by some gun oldies whoa are now either 30+ or gone) Marko, DJ, Skinner, Josh Hill, Tom Hill, Hooper, Moles, Mulligan, Reid, Schofield, Sherman, Stack, Vesz, Panos, Prato, Barlow. That is a whole lot of spuds

Think he had the ability and we could of used his run out of the backline, but no AFL club is going to give him a chance after what he'd done to us
Just walk out, immature sod.

Anyone questioning out effort and defensive pressure is off the mark.

Whatever issues talia has, are mccartney's responsibility and it's on him to sort the kid out ASAP. Anyone who can't see the flow on effect of not having him in the side isn't paying attention.

Cooney looked very good yesterday. Very happy for him.

I'm desperate for Dickson to find some form/fitness. He is (along with gia) our most natural and smartest forward. We need him up and going big time.

If McCartney was calling dal santo "outside fluff" then gimme that in spades. He was a class above yesterday. We need to pick guys with genuine skill, end of story. For that reason, I'd love to see hrovat and bonts play next week. Time to try and balance the team up again. It's a worry that McCartney has started the last 2 seasons, erring on the side of caution at selection.

First of all i would like to say Doggies great effort yesterday i did go to the game and i was bloody impressed with what they did put out in the game but through simple skill errors and little lapses once again we missed an oppertunity to kill a supposed top 8 side. I loved the effort from our kids McRae Dalhaus Even Wallis who i have been extremley critical of to sacrifice his own game and i will give credit where credits due that was a quality tagging role that he did play. Jake Stringer looks classy enoughand gives everyone alot of hope. My personal Belief of Liam Jones playing yesterday made us look a beter team within the first 5 minutes by running up and taking a great pack mark. I don't know why there is so much negativity about the dogs on this board yes you can throw the baby out with the bath water and say well where not skilled etc etc....But the thing i love about our doggies at the moment is the way we just have a go. Look at guys like Picken who just gave it to Thomas all day and Morris to play on Petrie and Roughead who's game i thought was he's best in doggies colours. I can understand why macca was so dissapointed in his after match press confrence because obviuosly like us all he thought we could of easily pinched the game through an oppertunity and with fundamental mistakes at times which kills a young side like ours. Johannison goes foward and kicks that goal what would have happend? i scream that to everyone yes we didn't take the oppertunity but look it from the positives. I'm one to to critise the Doggies at every chance I get but i was bloody proud of them yesterday and there effort was magnificent. I have no doubt one of these top 8 sides we are going to knock off in the next few weeks- If its not richmond next week it will be a strong side in the coming weekS. I noticed the improvement yesterday compared to early last year. Where miles in front of where we were. But the main thing is we keep improving. Bontempelli and Williams and Talia? Are they chances to all come in i dont know but what i do know is we need another power foward down there to help Jones.

Everyone can be negative towards Grant but hes that player we need to come andpush up and supply a spark and kick a goal because let's be honest we have a lack of goalkickers. Macca obviously has a bee in his bonnet with either Williams or Talia but bloody hell we need both of them in the side URGENTLY.

I was bloody proud to be a memeber of the Doggies yesterday i can see where were headed but a power foward must be on the agenda at some point come trade week or the draft soon enough. Also i see the doggies suppoters jumping into our skill level i wouldnt be to worried about that this is the start of year 3 of a bloody long re-build. Problem is you guys commenting on the skill issues where either terrible footballers yourself or blokes who were overweight and could never get a kick or to lazy to play the game yet you have pot shots at blokes running 17-25km's a game. Would love to see your skill errors? Where on the right track I have the faith after yesterday and Macca is the right man for the job

Go Dogs

Cheers

Maybe, but he was playing close to where I was sitting, and he obviously doesn't like contact, very bruise free football, maybe that is what Macca was referring too.

Then they came here and started a sack the coach thread.

I waited a day to post my thoughts, ive cooled down as i was pretty angry after the last qtr.

Skill errors killed us, From Bob to Jong to kicking for goal, overall it was pretty poor.

Forward structure seems totally absent, Crameri needs to stay in the the 50 arc as we really dont have anther mature type forward atm, Stringer cant play a full game and Jones while being a VFL star cant see to mark anything at AFL level.

To many of the same type - Why play Jong (i thought he did well) when we have 3-4 of his type already, Libba, Wallis, Stevens, Picken, what does Jong really add apart from more tackling, I know you need to reward good effort at VFL level, but his skills are pretty terrible and hard attack on the footy can only produce so much, would much rather see Bonts or Honeychurch get a game. we desperately need more class Jong doesn't add class.

Higgins - Wow after last year and all the injury's i thought it was time to part ways, i was wrong, is playing the back role perfectly (well apart from the stuff kick in) is a great kick, can actually hit targets!!!. Glad to be proven wrong.

JJ, seems to have gone backwards, has no awareness at all and how he missed a goal 25 out directly in front ill never know, maybe he just needs game time and welp he is only 20 games into his career so i wont write him off yet, i hope he shows more next week, if he gets a game.

The usual kids were pretty good, Macrea, Hunter, Stinger, Jake looks like he is 10 minutes away from really breaking open a game, he is so close, yet at time so far away.

Roughead was outstanding imo, id say him and Morris were bog for us, kids becoming a star at FB

Griff needs more time.

Cooney was ok without being great.

It was a hard game to Judge as it was so low scoring in the first and we seemed to tire bad in the last. I think next week will give us a better idea of where we are at against the tigers, i still have a lot of confidence that this season will see some really good improvement in the team, and in a lot of youngsters.

Don't write us off yet, the season has a long way to go, the first three weeks were always going to be hard.

Last 2 weeks have been backwards steps from last season. West Coast is a very good side North Melbourne are at best a good side in 2 games we are yet to kick 20 Goals.

Bleeding obvious our forward line is failing to deliver but that's not the whole story.

We are dropping extra players back behind the ball in Defense but we don't have the Luke Hodge or Lindsay Gilbee type player to bring it out at the right moment and create accurate quick attacking plays so our forwards are not covered, as they are now.

One thing we can do is get players who don't use the ball well like Boyd in front of it instead of behind it. Got to much dithering and small handpasses / kicks and hesitation coming out of Defense. The ball comes out to slow and the opposition easily gets back in numbers to flood our Forward 50.

Another thing is our spread when we get the ball isn't as good as it was late last year. Too many players hang around about 4-5 metres from the ball carrier expecting to be used, it just wastes time and plays into the oppositions hands. Sure we entered the Forward 50 metres 12 times for 3 Behinds in the 1st Quarter but often it was from our out riders popping it back in to players under pressure as North had plenty of time to flood back.

I'm not ready to give up on the Crameri - Stringer forward set up until we get the problems up feild sorted out and get the ball moving forward faster and more thoughtfully. If we keep frigging around with it coming out of Defense like we are now we will finish in the bottom 3.

I think Brendan McCartney should be prepared to drop older players who slow up ball movement as they are beyond the learning stage.

All due respect to BMac but Eastern Wood is and never will be a good defender. His athleticism and speed are his best attributes. His first instinct is to be attacking. His defensive football nous just does not come naturally to him. Of course he and the club can work on this but as sure as night follows day, by the time he is any good at it, there will be someone just as good readily available who is naturally defensive. To be frank, Jong is already more suited to the role Wood is playing.

Wood's most natural position is the wing, playing Hawthorns Isaac Smith type role. Then he offers some real offensive running and even X factor.

And whatever is up Bmac regarding Talia? His reaction clearly indicates there has been widespread rumblings about Talias non selection. I am convinced whatever it is, Bmac is being pigheaded about this and its going to require some humble pie on his behalf to repair relationship. There is simply no fair justification for not playing Talia.

And if it is about teaching him some kind of lesson than he had to play Austin, or Redpath - but he can't because he knows Talia is well ahead of them. This is as mysterious as the missing MH370. Someone said something about Talia and the lack of body contact, well until yesterday's game, Shaun Higgins has managed to avoid body contact for 8 years. JJ s body contact is erratic. Every player has weaknesses. Currently the amount of senior players and their continuous plain lazy disposal is driving me mad.

Can I say by the way, I love that Macca is keeping Talia out of the team. Even though I have no idea why.

There must be a huge amount of pressure for him to fold. But if he is trying to make some kind of point to Talia, and draw some kind of response out of him, then I think sacrificing our structure for a few games now is worth the long-term benefits. I want exactly the kind of coach who is strong enough to place the long-term good of the team over short-term expediency.

Now I would change my mind if I thought the reason was a stupid reason. But assuming that Macca's point is worth making then I completely back him to take however long it takes, to make that point. Just look at the response from Jarrad Grant last year to see that it's worth it.

There are very few coaches who would do this. And the fact that he is one of them encourages me.

I think Brendan McCartney should be prepared to drop older players who slow up ball movement as they are beyond the learning stage.

I thought on that for ages and hope it happens through the year, even if it means we have to play some younger bodies
I thought Boyd held up the ball too long when he got his hands on it and the opposition would position players in front of the ball and he didn't have an option to move the ball forward because he is just not skilled enough by foot to hit up a target
