The Forwards

Elliott is an x factor I hadn't anticipated impacting so much at the end of a season. He has gone up a level with the maturity and power of his forward game. And of course that winning goal.

Johnson has come from left field. I didn't expect him playing AFL this year, but it's like he's just stepped out of the wings into the spotlight and thrives on playing centre stage. His long, accurate kicks by the last quarter had come to be almost an expectation rather than surprise. It's hard to imagine how good he will get.

Mihochek is having some big and some quiet games, can chip in for a clever goal like tonight and at least play a team role as part of a chain. Sometimes he will star.

McCreery was important in the last quarter. Whatever he had or hadn't done in the previous three quarters was forgotten and forgiven.

Ginnivan was kind of quiet but did his bit in adding to the general ambience and was part of the relentless pressure applied to Melbourne that wore them down.

Jordy began well, looking like he could be the differences in the clearances, but he seemed to disappear for a large patch, possibly because of some forgettable handpasses and disposals, including the crucial OofB kicks. For an elite player he makes a lot of unforced errors.

That's our named forward line. In the end, given lack of opportunity for the large period of the game dominated by Melbourne, as a group they functioned well tonight.

65 to 41 inside 50s.
52 to 32 clearances.
162 to 138 contested possessions.

No wonder Melbourne won.

Honestly that has to be one of the greatest and bravest performances by a team well beaten in key areas.

We had no damn right and yet we still did.

Amazing.
First half, I agree. We were fortunate to be as close as we were.

In the second half though we were genuinely the better team and the numbers show that. Evened up contested ball and clearances and controlled the game.

Dees may have blasted more i50 but they weren't the quality entries of the first half. Whereas we were clean going forward all night. How is more important than how many.

I don’t even know how to describe my feelings after the game. Obviously incredibly happy to have won, but absolutely gobsmacked that we did. It’s just pure disbelief.
The beauty of the game plan is even when we get dominated in the stats the game is still on our terms because we take risks and are always trying to create scores.. wouldnt hurt to recruit a clearance mid or two tho !

COXY is showing some mongrel

Good for him

This is such an interesting stat. We have basically been smashed in every stat except pressure. We were lead by our Captain, of course. 9/12 top pressure players were pies.

We have bought into the game plan. Yes, we may not win much of the ball. However, we’ll make you turn the ball so that we can score on you.

I thought Jordy was best on ground tonight. Enormous.
20k, 5 h'balls, 9 clearances, 3 tackles 1 goal.
Was our best by Q1, quieter Q2 (when the Dees got on top in clearances).
He was the most influential in our ability to progressively restore our clearance problems. Critical therefore in our surge in Q3&4. Did a lot of running. Hit Mihocek for his goal and McCreery with the pass that he passed to AJ for his fourth.

I might be completely wrong here, but Jackson is not a million dollar player to me.

I watched the game with a Geelong supporting mate of mine, and at the start of the game we had a “is Jackson the most overrated player in the game?” conversation. We agreed he probably is.

Jordy was vital for his strength and creatively, but his disposal can be frustrating - inaccurate, seemingly careless and just when we don't need it. But he's a bull we could ill afford to lose.

Just amazing,I’m totally stunned at what this team has achieved this year. They mightn’t be the most talented team going round, but by God they’re all heart. They just never give up no matter how far they’re behind. You’ve just got to love the they’re playing and their incredible will to win. It’s just out of this world.

I don’t know how Fly has been able to achieve so much with this team in one season, but it is remarkable. If you didn’t know any better you’d swear he’s done a deal with you know who to get this team to win.I’m sure he’s got a portrait of the 2021 Collingwood side in his basement, which keeps on losing, while the 2022 Collingwood side just keeps on winning.😊
