It certainly doesn't matter what a bunch of armchair enthusiasts like us think but many of us forget just how good he was in his early years.

He isn't a shadow player that he was when he first took the footy world by storm Molly and both he and the club are the poorer for it.

Whatever the reason for the change it saddens me because I loved how he used to play.
The club neutered his aggression.

Disagree, we can't keep up this style for an entire season. The players are going to be burnt to a crisp by round 10 and we'll only won 2-3 more games, calling it now. Bookmark it.

2-3 more games from now?

I’m not as convinced that the opposition player he “is always 15 meters behind” is always his player. Rather he’s caught covering for a team mate.

I thought he had 1 of his better games yesterday, especially given the size and quality of the Cats. Hasn’t stopped people hanging shit on him. Guess there’s a use it or lose it system.

He was serviceable but is a fumbler and makes poor choices with the ball, defensively he shouldn’t be asked to man Hawkins sized opponents anyway.

Thanks Captain Obvious…………but you don’t lose a game 30 points up in the last……..rebuild or not.
Well that what happens when you play kids, and you are playing a completely different game style to what we did with Buckley the last 5 years.
Get used to it sunshine, when you play kids with a completely different game style attacking through the middle.
I guarantee you it will happen again.
Its for the greater good for our club
Rebuild, give kids games, teach them a game plan. get us to a premieship window asap.
The last thing i want for our club is too be content in making finals every year and making up the numbers.
premieship or bust!
Good on Macrae love his work so far
The bottom line Buckley was a champion player , but as a coach he was ordinary and thats being generous
9 or 10 years of crap, never had the balls to do a full on rebuild.
Maguire as much good as he did at Collingwood, he lost his credabilty and got it completely wrong replacing Malthouse with Buckley

Point me in the direction of teams that have lost by 2 goals after being 30 points up at the start of the 4th in recent history.
It's rather rare, but it certainly does happen:
2015 Rd. 1 - Essendon led Sydney by 34 at 3/4 time and lost by 12.
2019 Rd. 2 - Hawthorn led Western Bulldogs by 30 at 3/4 time and lost by 19.

Those are the only other cases of a team leading by 30 or more points at 3/4 time and losing by 12 or more points from 2010 onwards.

It doesn't quite fit the criteria but Geelong led Melbourne by 32 points at 3/4 time and lost by 4 points in Rd. 23 2021.
Geelong led Brisbane by 38 points at 3/4 time and lost by 5 points in Rd. 13 2013. That's the biggest 3/4 time lead a team that ultimately lost has had since 2010.

The Western Bulldogs led Melbourne by 13 points with about 9 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter of last year's Grand Final, yet ultimately lost by a staggering 74 points. Sometimes teams just run out of puff!

Think he meant we need to sound out what maybe available and or make sure our recruiters are on the ball and aware of a pressing need in this area.

imo kruegers hands aren’t shore and reminds me of a flanker good ground skills lacking strong hards. Not sure he has good leading patterns either but this is all off limited exposure so we will see on him I guess.

obviously nothing can be done right now.

Not sure why people jump to conclusions about players when they admit limited exposure.

Geelong get away with a Lot

Has to be by draft, hopefully the next 2 years we finish low enough to acquire at least 1 high quality KPF. It ain't happening by fa/trade or hasn't in my lifetime. Who we get Jesse White and Q tip Lynch? There's some difference makers of the wrong kind.

Yet every year a big name is on the market you hear "it's a done deal they're coming to the Pies they barracked for em as a kid" lmao. They were saying that before Jezza Cameron last 2 contracts, including before the one to stay at GWS before he came down south. Same with Lynch, this off season it was all about Ben King, yeah that ain't happening either.

Gotta be competitive and win some games, but lose enough that we can stockpile some talent.

Every match in history where the above scenario has happened:

Richmond vs Essendon (Round 9 1920) = Richmond won by 20 (trailed by 35 at 3QT)
Essendon vs Fitzroy (Round 16 1920) = Fitzroy won by 16 (trailed by 38 at 3QT)

Fitzroy vs Carlton (Round 15 1942) = Carlton won by 17 (trailed by 30 at 3QT)

Footscray vs Essendon (Round 11 1953) = Footscray won by 16 (trailed by 30 at 3QT)

South Melbourne vs St Kilda (Round 13 1962) = St Kilda won by 17 (trailed by 36 at 3QT)

Fitzroy vs South Melbourne (Round 4 1978) = Fitzroy won by 19 (trailed by 32 at 3QT)

Footscray vs Hawthorn (Round 13 1982) = Footscray won by 15 (trailed by 33 at 3QT)

West Coast vs Richmond (Round 1 1987) = West Coast won by 14 (trailed by 33 at 3QT)

Port Adelaide vs Brisbane Lions (Round 4 2008) = Brisbane Lions won by 20 (trailed by 33 at 3QT)
Port Adelaide vs Carlton (Round 12 2008) = Carlton won by 12 (trailed by 30 at 3QT)

Sydney vs Essendon (Round 1 2015) = Sydney won by 12 (trailed by 34 at 3QT)

Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs (Round 2 2019) = Western Bulldogs won by 19 (trailed by 30 at 3QT)

Collingwood vs Geelong (Round 3 2022) = Geelong won by 13 (trailed by 30 at 3QT)

Gotta cool the rebuild chatter. We are a middle age team with most of our team in its prime. Good few kids getting a good run at it, but we aren't as young as you think
Spot on.

I think the idea of us being a young team is overstated, though it has been refreshing to see an injection of youth (e.g. Daicos, Henry, Ginnivan, McCreery, McInnes etc.) have a positive impact on the team.

Last week, we fielded the 4th oldest team in the competition only behind Geelong, Brisbane and Richmond.

That is true but so is GCs point imo it needs a player by player assessment. Imo Henry fits GCs bill where as Daicos, Reef and Poulter should have games pumped into them.
Daicos is an automatic selection so not really relevant in terms of getting games into him. Reef may be ready to play a role too, we'll find out over the next month or so. Not sure what role Poulter can play in the seniors at the moment.

Honestly not sure Checkers would have made a difference either. He’s that tweener size so wouldn’t be able to beat Hawkins in brute strength, and isn’t fast enough to go with Cameron on a lead either.

Hawkins and Cameron are the best forward duo in the game. The best you can do to quell them is to keep the ball as far away from them as possible. As folks were saying before the game, winning the battle in the middle was key.

1 on 1 they're gonna win the contest 9/10. You gotta double and triple team these guys. We need Roughie back so that Moore and Howe can play their roles more effectively. It would've been nice if Maynard could've helped out a bit last night. Dunno what the hell he was busy doing....

We're probably older than the 2010 premiership team.

Let’s be sensible about the history.
At the time the contract was signed Grundy was the most valuable player in the game according to Leigh Mathews.
Grundy had huge offers to leave - the MARKET decided his worth, not CFC.
We just paid the market rate.

I don’t recall mass derision at the length of contract at the time - just celebration that we’d retained a gun.

If we had a crystal ball then we may have done things differently- but this constant whining about the contract is just pitiful and completely pointless hindsight.

Thats why I asked the question about Witts, who I always rated, unlike some on here. I’d have preferred to sign Witts for 4 or 5 years at a reasonable price than what Grundy was given. I mean, he’s not Buddy Franklin.

yeah, we were just smashed at the contested ball. That was the problem and I think the coaches should have made a move or two. Brown should have been subbed in for Sidebottom too around the time Steele started to labour.

The concern with Roughie is it will be a lot to ask a 31yo who is coming off shoulder surgery and a limited pre season to be his usual reliable self

Yeah, he gets away with it a lot, and he's allowed to monster opponents out of his way.

Imagine if Clokey got this treatment? He'd have kicked twice as many goals.
Amen to that but Clokey never wore the hoops.

It's not just him and Duckwood the entire team gets an armchair ride from the umps, not to mention they are the only team to have their very own NOT shared ground in the league - no surprise they make the finals so often and no surprise they often get smashed in said finals.

it is relevant as he’s also a first year player who also will get better with experience, just like others who can perform at a young age which was my point they get games but are up to it. Nick is obviously a young gun.
Would of loved Poulters run against the cats.
