Autopsy Round 4: Hawks have mare against Saints

Just went to the AFL site to see the replay of the Ryder on Day bump. Legit have to watch a 30 second Sportsbet advertisement prior to watching the replay. Absolute shame that we get this slammed down our throat 24/7. I don’t want my boy thinking gambling and football go together like a pie and sauce.

And then you go the Hawks website and you get Mitch Lewis with a bunch of kids telling us to “love the game and not the odds”

Wow. The negativity here almost stings as much as yesterdays result.
Did we actually believe we're close to the finished product and just needed a bit more polish ?
We need to hit the draft and hope to grab another A grader.

The club also needs to work hard to grab another decent player in the mid season draft. (though Duke and Bramble are much more than decent. Reckon these 2 are potential A graders)

I'm not going to bag any of our boys. We will get days like this. Plus you learn an enormous amount from losses like this.

Gutted.?..yeah. But despondent ? No way.

Against the Blues our midfield was smashed but we came back and hit the front from about 40 points down. Take out some pathetic work from the umpires and we probably win.

We will make finals next year or in 2 years. But will do more than make up the numbers. Opposition supporters will be saying "Sh#t ...the Hawks are back again??"

Mitchell is trying to play a game style akin to the Tigers, without the cattle to execute it properly.

We don’t have a back 6 anywhere near the Richmond premiership years.

No Grimes / Astbury to lockdown/nullify opposition talls.

Everyone seems to want to be the Vlastuin type who rolls off and intercept marks.

Scrim, CJ, Sicily are all horrendously unaccountable and we’re shown up today.

Our players don’t have anywhere near the quality footskills of a Houli, Edwards, Short, etc.

We kept trying to hit short 45s to the back of the square and got opened up as a result.

“A man needs to know his limitations”
Scrimshaw, cj, and Sicily are fine. They play off their opponents and get back hard to make sure they can nullify them. It doesn't work when opposition run it in numbers and don't bomb it.

Stkilda also had three players run forward of the ball at all opportunities. Normally that would backfire

Hats off to the Saints today . They pressured us everytime we got near it and gave us no space. Our kicking was under the pump and we missed a lot of our kicks and when we turned it over they were off to the races.

Also helps when you have a couple of big targets in Membery and King leading up or doubling back.

Ross and Gresham early on ran riot and we had nothing to stop it .

It felt early like it was their day but we made it really easy for them…not strong enough in the contest, decision making and execution worst I can recall. Going to get these results so need to focus on playing those who deserve games. Howe shouldn’t play again, was a good footballer under clarko but unsuited to Mitchell’s game plan - will play well for Sydney from next year. Phillips deserves his spot and Worpel must go back to Box Hill for Ned Long.

Than what we should be doing is playing either Jeka or Callow and using Lewis as the 2nd ruck. Sure right now it's a downgrade because your taking your best forward away for periods of a game but on the flipside your exposing Jeka or Callow to the big time which they need and it allows Nash to just worry about hunting the ball as a mid. Feel like we were just happy to concede we were going to lose the ruck battle instead of trying to find a way to neutralise an advantage they had.

We lose more taking Lewis away from key forward than Nash away from a mid role, which he is still spending time doing anyway.

If we brought in a Box Hill guy like Callow/Jeka/Kozi to free Nash up we'd be better rucking them and allowing Lewis to maintain his momentum.

Mind you I think for now Nash is still probably the best of the make shift options and just cross fingers Lynch isn't far away.

We have some Butchers trying to play a game style that is not suited to them.

Mitch will very quickly start to weed out the poor kicks in the side as we are not playing a Clarko stop start short chip game style where poor kicks can survive .

I'm not sure I'd call pick 29 high. Only slight more than 1 in 3 picks at that left play over 100 games, so on average he should fail. He has some good attributes and some poor ones, if he can get the best out of himself by playing to his strengths and trying to improve his weaknesses, I can still see him being a decent player, but I agree his disposal can be hard to watch at times.

Elite runner but a very poor kick. His ball drop is very awkward and when he is on his left side then look out front 5 rows in the crowd as it could go anywhere.

Stronger version of Timmy Clarke.

I hope Mitch says to him, you are going to be my number 1 tagger every week and just give him that role.

10 min into the last sums up our day as a whole- nothing going right

Stkilda player with no eyes on the ball pushes Lewis in the face. Umpire somehow sees a hold against Lewis (despite both his hands being above his head)

You'd have to say Finn is the worst kick in the team, yet Mitch keeps picking him. It can't be for his running ability alone. He must see something else in him. He's keeping Phillips out at this stage.

Lewis got Howard in the head in that contest before Howard made contact

Clear as day a free for Howard

O’Meara, Worpel and Finn can’t play this game style. Can one of them survive in a purely negative tagging role? Maybe. But they can’t be guys who play a ball winning role because they lack the skill. Very interested to see what Mitchell does there

Wow, what a reality check. We all said this was going to happen from time to time and it will happen a few more times this year. We must hold our nerve and keep the development going. Still think we are bottom 6 but I'm OK with that this year.

Really goods signs this year with Reeves, Nuke, CJ, Lewis, Moore and Scrim in particular. Ward and McDonald will be players and I thought Finn played his best game in terms of hands on the ball yesterday. Not great but I saw signs. If he is to make it, they will improve his disposal as will more confidence.

The boys will be hurting but its how they react that is important. Lets not lose faith just yet.

Bad day yesterday but it’s going to happen every so often so you try and find some positives like Mitch Lewis having 10 shots on goal. We need another target up there, either a resting ruck or Jeka/Kosi need to come in. Put it behind us and onto Easter monday
Go hawks

Patrick Ryder is a drug cheating thug.
Was at the game and wanted to boo that behaviour. I didn't know what to do?
We were out marked, out kicked, out run, and out numbered. There was effort and dare I suppose. Dare without flair leads to despair acoording to Dr Suess I think I read....next week maybe?
