Review Round 4: Saints v Pies

I thought it was telling today when the whips were cracking in the last quarter that we started to get the ball into Acres and Gresham's hands more.

Like when we needed to burn the clock they were two of the go to guys along with Joey, Armo and Rooey as they have cool heads and good disposal skills.

They beat us in 2 areas which no doubt will be reviewed and improved.

Once again go and tell me how effective all those disposals were... how many turn overs ... how many handballs chipped around going nowhere.

Sorry mate, you posted the possession count.

It was a great team effort and I am proud of the result. No game will be 100% perfect.
You answered your own question. It was a great team effort. Our pressure on their mids wasn't exclusively pressure by our mids, it was pressure by others in the side as well. I can't see how our mids beat theirs, they had 50 inside 50's and only kicked 7 goals so today was more of a reflection of team pressure & team defense than us getting on top of them in the middle.

Agree with all of this except I thought the game was OK.
Kicking for goal atrocious although our missed sort of helped as it didnt go back to the centre where we were well beaten.
Thought our pressure and control of the game was masterful.

Has been quoted how many more stats their mids got. If so our defencive structure for four qtrs to all only 7 goals was brilliant.

Just kick effing straight.
Normally those sorts of numbers would see your defenders under the pump, which wasn't the case.

Their effectiveness was shit.

Inside 50 can be 49 metres out. Stats are really to simple. Our mids did as well as theirs and we won because our small to medium forwards did better. We didn't lose the midfield race.

Possibly one of the worst games I have ever seen but we won and deserved to win by more.

Really? Completely disagree, I thought it was an enjoyable, tough game with some good displays of individual skill. Last week's battle of mediocrity was much less enjoyable for me.

i agree that we are letting teams down but our issue is also that the players we run through the midfield do not have enough impact on general play. they dont win enough of it and when they do they're not as effective as they need to be

i doubt you find that richo is content with how the midfield is working and i doubt youd find a coach who's happy for their team to be beaten in contested possession with a midfield that is not high in disposal. i doubt anyone would be happy with how our ruck is going, the pressure is excellent but we now need to start getting more of the football and using it better
I agree with you. Our midfield is by far our weakest area on the ground, but don't forget we have an elite midfielder in Jack Steven sitting on the sidelines and an in-and-under, contested ball winner in Stevens as a potential inclusion as well.

The way i see it , i thought we got the ball out of their forward line way easier than they did from ours. That made a big difference.
I also thought their defense did a good job.

the richo pressers were really really good. didnt shy away from the issues at all

buckleys one on the other hand, jesus it sounds like he benched pendles for disciplinary reasons. **** you'd be ropable as a pies fan

IMO it's more that he played well below what we know he's capable of and has so far regressed this year. He may have contributed on some level, but he still played a crap game.

Hickey or Pendlebury? Hickey was beaten but far from a crap game. Last quarter was very good. Grundy will be the AA ruckman this year baring injury. Like a midfielder and Hockey is clearly the best option for that type.

Last week dunstan and Acres also stood up early in the last great signs

Well tat is an opinion I don't agree with.

His game anything but crap.

Really need to watch it unbiasly. His wrk around the ground is so superior to Longer it isnt funny.

Billings is class, so happy for him to sneak a goal and play a good game it is exactly what he needed and the fist pump he does when he gets a goal is great. Yes conversion is obvious but that will straighten out.

Gresham A-GRADE.

Riewoldt - LEGEND

Captain Geary - HEART

Roberton - GUN

Carlisle - THANK GOD YOU'RE HERE

Ross - CAN TAG

Dunstan - DURABLE

Brown - FIRED up against former team one thing I loved was his interview where he said I'm so glad to have the Red amongst the black and white, he's truly happy and it's showing.

Steele - I dare say it our next LENNY.

Long - MACHINE / would have been nice to get his first goal in the RW&B BUT I'm confident it will be one of those impossible goals he'll drill, excitement and tackling machine.

RICHO- PLEASING

List goes on!!!

I am so PROUD.

Go Saints!!!

In Richos Post game Press Conference he mentioned that ARMO was assisted off the ground in the last qrt and was Very Sore. Dont think he will play next week.

Quality of their inside 50s were quite poor.

- They went at 72% DE, we went at 76% (which is above league average)

- Pies 19 shots from 50 inside 50s
- Saints 28 shots from 66 inside 50s

This is where we won the game:

Smashed them in Tackles, marks & uncontested possession. Only -14 in contested possession is not that much.

Shows we worked harder than them. Game over

Killed them really.

Really need to watch it unbiasly. His wrk around the ground is so superior to Longer it isnt funny.

Longer has nothing to do with it. I didn't mention him so why even bring him up? Hickey has been poor this year compared to his own past form. That's pretty much a fact and is completely separate from what Longer could/would/should do.

Accusing me of bias is pretty stupid btw.

Geez I'd be loving to play Sydney now. I don't rate them at all with so many players out, especially now that I've seen Collingwood first hand.

No doubt when we play them they'll have all of Tippett, Rampe, Heeney, McVeigh etc back in

Will be a good test though in 5-6 weeks time

So is Bruce rucking full time?

I'd also add onto this, we have a top 4 list of talent (with major holes mind you - key forward, rebound defender, crumber fwd) but we do have a top 4 list on talent.

Going through region by region. Our midfield group is arguably the strongest in the game (including ruck). GWS are the only club in the conversation.
Consider: Grundy (best ruck in the game today and clearly the in form ruckman in the comp), Pendlebury (best 3-4 mid in the game), Treloar (top 10 mid in the comp), Sidebottom (top 15-20 mid in the comp), Adams (best 20-25 mid in the comp), Wells (best 30 mid in the comp), Varcoe (high influence with pressure game), Phillips (highly productive and objectively another Sidebottom), Hoskin-Elliott (a surprise, has speed/endurance, hitting the scoreboard and looking clear AFL standard on wing/hf), De Goey (quality and going to get better), Crisp etc.

Up forward there are excellent pieces (Elliott, Fasolo particularly with Sidebottom/Hoskin-Elliott/Phillips rolling through there and Broomhead capable and someone I expect a lot of with more games under his belt). We lack a quality developed key forward (Moore and Cox will have their games but both are early stages), but the smalls and mediums, both pure forwards and fwd/mids as per the names listed we have are highly talented and strong performers by position.

Down back we've also got good pieces. Capable key defenders (Lynden Dunn is exceptionally high quality and should be getting a game and partnering with Reid). Otherwise we have a group that win their 1v1s (Maynard/Ramsay etc) and Reid and Howe are both elite intercepters by position. Langdon and Scharneberg also would be terrific as intercepters if available for selection.

--
The overall problem while the key forwards positionally are that most pressing need that is most glaringly obvious.

The most pressing problem for Collingwood is they're not running back hard enough defensively, getting goal-side of their opponents. We've seen it every week and most obviously over the first two rounds where opponents found it too easy going end to end without any resistance.

The cheat v Sydney was Collingwood pressuring and tackling which covered not getting back somewhat, but the problem still exists and requires addressing for Collingwood to not only make the top 8 but also contend for a top 4 position.

thread needs more Barrels

and people rely on that bloke for draft information. i am literally in tears at the midfield appraisal
